Do you guys think that once in service it will really ease the traffic or are people going to keep driving their cars since Gas is cheap (It seems to me)? How is the mentality here about it? Will you guys take the train to work for instance?

Fortunately I don't work. But if I did, I would still use my car. Very spoiled and the thoughts of public transportation cripple me. Although I do miss the NY subways. Go figure.

Are you talking about the Metro? If so, then I think people will use it, but also people will be forced to use it. There are new laws coming in to restrict licences to people under a certain income, thereby excluding a fair section of the population from driving. So they will have to use the metro.
But that said, why wouldn't you use it? I would if it was convenient to where I worked. I hate driving for so long each day. If I could get there easily and spend 20 mins chilling with my iPod instead of battling other drivers I would surely use it.

True, but Dubai is often not comparible to the rest of the world. The Metro will take some take some strain off the buses but I doubt will do much else.

If you could travel from Old Dubai to Jebal Ali in 30 mins instead of an hour+ at 8am would you take it? I would.

I agree with Captain.
Its a state of the art metro system so why not make full use of it!
As long as there are decent people in the carriages and not a bunch of awfull smelling construction workers I would like to listen to the Ipod without making an effort on the roads.
But I also agree with Bora. That driving a car is a luxury of privacy and comfort not simply to be set aside. It has some very nice advantages but I think I will come back at that when I start driving a car in Dubai.
Take the Metro guys! Its fast and with a time table. Hopefully reliable. ;)

The problem I see is getting from home to station/station to home. You have some people that are going to live some distance from entry/exit points. If you live in JBR getting to/from the station would be quite a trek. It seems that the Metro best serves those that live within a short distance of it. Maybe RTA will provide vans to pick up/discharge those who would require a second source of transport to get to their destination.

This was one of the points I was going to make too, Dubai is hardly suited for pedestrians at the best of times. I'm all for it, I use the tube in London all the time and Dubai is in need of something to ease the traffic but its a wait and see job with the Metro - if it ever actually gets finished.

If I recall correctly, there are going to be "class" cars, I believe 3. Different ticket prices for each class. (Tea and coffee served in 1st?)

Only people living in bearable walking distance of arrival and departure stations. Bearable meaning with in a couple of minutes of wallking time. If you have to walk even 15 mins in this heat in you bussiness suit to get to the station and then another 15 to reach your work place all sweaty, stinky and looking like a mess, I don't think so. Also 15dhs ticket(Dh15 for a trip between the Gateway Station and the Atlantis Aquaventure Station and Dh25 for a single round trip.) not affordable for the class who already use the dubai busses. Maybe a bit less on other routes ? So unless your the few you live right next to the station and have your work place right next to a station its no good
I don't many people will use their cars to get to the station and then find parking then pay for the parking then pay for the ticket for the metro
All in all a total failure in my view and a waste of resources, money, plus added hassles of all the super traffic jams its construction created through out dubai. It cost around 4 billion dhirhams for the 5.45 kms of the metro on the palm. According to RTA. So at 15dhs a pop it would have to carry 22,000 passenger everyday for the next 10 years to breakeven !
I actually love to walk but except for the few cooler months its not bearable to walk for more than a few minutes times during day time . Specially in formal clothing.

I remember that when in Northern Virginia, people would drive their cars to the nearest Metro station, park it amd then ride metro into Washington DC. There was less traffic on the roads, and I agree like some already mentioned, you could listen to your IPod, read your morning paper and even do some work if need be before you get to the pffice instead of beinf stuck in traffic for hours. I didn't mention the fact that gas prices was somewhat very high just few months ago in the US. Cheers.

I highly doubt it will take only half an hour from Old Dubai to Jebel Ali Cap, considering the number of stop it takes going through it.
The fare also seems a bit high for me so I don't think i'm going to take the train to and fro from work.
Before, they announced 'certainly' the fare will not exceed 10dhms. Ahhh Dubai...the consistency of their announcement/laws/regulations/w.e. here is amazing

Good point actually. The drive-park-train thing is what I was thinking for people using the metro, but you're right there is no where to park. I suppose it's because they are right along SZR and it's full up already.

Anywhere I can find the map of this metro? This metro system needs to be very large to be successful, meaning maybe reaching Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. I hope the leaders of Dubai have a long temr staretgy for this investment.

it will be joined up with other emirates as well.
some stations will have big car parks especially the one in ghusais etc.
as for the walking problem. i am sure they they will provide taxis & buses at certain stations where parkings are a problem. but i guess having a bike will help if your house or appartment is nearby :D
