Kid, you seems to have access to good information to get those numbers.
I would start 3 months back, like October, but nevertheless a huge number,
if those are correct.
yes guys, not only less traffic, but goods and services will be more competitive.

very highy possible that it is true - although you cant assume the same rate every month. layoffs built up from sept onwards and peaked in Dec./Jan.
only the big companies make it to the news.....

The figure for DH is actually 800.
And dont forget these figures are only what is published and obviously censored in the papers.
Personally i would totally ignore what we read in the papers and at least treble it.
What we dont hear about is the acumlative numbers of small business's, shop workers. labourers etc that propably total more than even the headline figures.

Too many companies are absent from uaekid's list:
Better Homes, 50 staff, November 2008 (word is that that 200+ jobs were chopped)
Aldar, 200 jobs
Damac Properties, 200 jobs, November 2008
Omniyat, 100 jobs? November 2008
Sama Dubai, considering job cuts
Shuaa Capital layoffs, 21 staff, December 2008
Tameer Holding, 180 staff, December 2008?
Arabtec, 150 jobs at Meydan, another 5000 jobs in Dec. 2008
Emaar Properties (EMAAR), 45 or 600 staff (unconfirmed)
Morgan Stanley (15% of stuff let go)
Goldman Sachs (10% cut)
First Gulf Bank (FGB) 30 jobs & First Gulf Marketing several dozen jobs, according to "people familiar with the situation"
National Bank of Fujairah (NBF), 40 jobs
ENBD, 2000 jobs

Sadly your list is still the tip of the iceburg i feel.

Yep, there's a lot more to it and I don't see the situation improving anytime soon. Thankfully, we are weathering the storm right now. Anyhow, here's another stat to add to the ever increasing pile:
Burt Hill, 111 employees laid off

My Indian buddy from Lamprell at JAFZA just got an "extended holiday" for a month, due to lack of clients. He says 30 Brits in management got fired.

The extended holiday is unpaid, by the way.

It seems that the only redundencies that are acknowledged are the management and administration.
Not much mention about the number of labours being laid off, which has to be in the thousands with developments being put on hold or cancelled, but we don't read or hear about those poor souls. And when they go back many face having to pay loans back that they had taken to get to Dubai.
In addition, a lot of hotel staff have been put on two months leave without pay, not knowing if they will have a job at the end of that period.

You better believe that this situation is just starting to unfold.

From another forum: there seems to be a small group of people who visit those who have been jailed for absconding - leaving behind debts (personal loans, cars, probably property as well). And I'm not talking about laborers! Lots of money being withdrawn/transferred from local bank accounts. It seems alot of people are doing so in anticipation of being one of those to be made redundant.

What exactly are this small group of people doing when they visit the people in Jail?

And Monarch Hotel is not exactly one of the better known Hotels, so you have to wonder.

Jumeriah Group is putting staff on two months without pay. Obviously no guarantee there will be a job when the two months is up.
Monarch - beautiful property, badly managed. Nobody from the executive level has been sacked.

i was at my developers' office (yes i am still holding on to my property...waht a sucker!!)
The guy there told me that about 3000 heads from their contractors' staff had got knocked off.
Not surprising given that a lot of the contracting firms are out of work.

What about Amlak's board meeting yesterday. Any news?

From what I've heard, Du Telecom is laying off all its temporary staff and contractors. Permanent staff haven't been touched yet but they're reportedly next in the firing line.

Yet another stat that I just read somewhere:
DAMAC: 150 people this week
Nakheel: 500 by the end of the week as part of a restructure
Anyone out here from either company who could confirm this bit of info?
P.S.: uaekid, I thought you were keeping the OP updated with the latest info?
K-Dog
Where did you read about Nakheel? They are doing a few at a time, they don't want it to be in the media if they do all at once.

Confirmed news from DAMnAC:
***
A solemn procession of salesmen and women filed out of Damac offices on Tuesday, holding in their hands letters which told them their services had been terminated.
Many were lingering outside the Tecom branch of the real estate giant until 6pm, smoking cigarettes in shaky hands as they mulled over their sudden loss of jobs.
“We were told this afternoon that we would be made redundant,” said one former employee, who declined to give a name for fear it may impact his ability to change jobs.
“Business has been down for a long time and they mostly cut people from the sales staff.
“They promised us there wouldn’t be any major job cuts after the layoffs in October, but there have been hundreds laid off since then from all the different offices in Dubai.” Between 45 and 50 employees were laid off on Tuesday

@KDog:
It's unconfirmed at the moment. I'll post more info once I get my hands on a credible source.
