Chocoholic Yes, the wonderful people at Etisalat have now blocked it in the free zones as well. Etisalat are nothing but a bunch of money grabbing, greedy buggers. Their approach is 'unislamic' because of their greed and having a monopoly, never mind what they say about blocking sites and cheaper ways to get in touch with people. Their new slogan 'Reach' is a joke! You can't reach anyone! Next they'll block Yahoo and MSN MEssenger - you wait and see! Bring on DU, because I and certainly everyone I know will move over to them! terranova well, i wasn't in a free zone but i could always still use it.. i just couldn't go to their website but the application worked fine.... i hate this, my phone bills are going to go through the roof now. Have you tried using yahoo messenger with voice ?? shafique We managed to use Skype yesterday morning, but I've just tried a test call and am getting 'no proxies' ... I'm with the DIC and the Skype button is green, which means it's connected unfortunately no one on my list is showing that their online, so can't definitely check that it's not working - but it doesn't look good if I couldn't get through to the skype test call. STOP PRESS Tried it again and it went through to the Skype answering service, so it appears to be working here in DIC, proxy-free land. At least for now. Sort of. It still uses Etisalat plumbing. The ISP is called TECOM no?
Al Shamil is the type of connection - DSL as opposed to dial up.
There's another topic 'Vonage' with similar issues and a link to a useful topic on the vonage forums. It looks like Etisalat has managed to successfully detect and block VOIP traffic - there was something in the news a few months ago about them getting software for that purpose. bschmidt Strange.... I could still use it today on a normal Etisalat "Al Shame" Internet connection.... I'm in Sharjah, maybe they haven't updated their servers here yet? Etisalat really is a shame... Actually it's really weird. At the office we can't use either Skype or Netmeeting... Dunno what's causing this. stuchil it's really strange, you can connect and it shows your contacts are online but try making a call or sending a message and you can't connect, yet from the office today using the proxy it worked. ahamed try Yahoo messenger with a proxy & the call option works. Skype works in my office, but then they blocked VOIP On our subnet. anyone able to run skype on mac osx using socks5? managed to run skype for win on winxp emulated on top of parallel for mac using socks5 but the same socks setting on mac net preferrence did not produce the same result. any hint. pm me if info too hot. wifi_guy http proxies will not work with Skype mate :D but Socks5 is Okey... you have to check the Socks5 proxy lists all the time... that s a big deal :shock: vijark6 Try these.

Don't know what Etisalat is waiting for before blocking these too.
1) they do not know about these two alternate sites.
2) They do not have a system to monitor VoIP.
They probably jus read forums like these and
keep on blocking one by one, as and when
they come to know :lol:
3) These two alternate sites are not
"inconsistent with the religious, cultural,
political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates". !
4) Etisalat has a share in this company !
While the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA)
keeps blocking VoIP,
and all DU customers get scr$wed,
this software will continue to work only with Etisalat networks
and NOT with DU connections !!!
Once it is established that no software (Skype, etc etc)
other than nettelephone works in UAE,
nettelephone (with 90% share holdings by Eti)
will increase the charges by 500%,

After travelling in Dubai (UAE) and in China, I found a software that unblock Skype and censored contents in some countries.
I know Skype is blocked or there is censor in the following countries : Belize, China, Columbia, Cuba, Jordan, UAE ...
After searching internet, I found a way to make calls and to access censored content in those countries using a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
How does it works ?
A VPN encrypte the data you send on internet to a US IP adress (tunnel). This way your Internet Services Provider can't detect you are using Skype or another VoIP software ! It allow you access to censored content and geographical locked contents (i.e: listening radio on , watching TV streams for US residents, ...).
There is a lot of VPN softwares, the first I tried was VPNaccounts. I didn't like it because it took a lot of time for activation, it was expensive and helpdesk support was very slow.
A friend of mine who lives in Belize told me about another VPN software called Witopia personnalVPN.
Now I am using Witopia personnalVPN. It is easier to use (you just have to launch the software before launching Skype), faster and cheaper than all other VPN softwares I tried.
It costs 39.99$ and works perfectly.
