think i read one of those threads... isnt it the case that you are not allowed to mention it or hes gonna axe the idea?

botanical gardens are good if you are into orchids and trees, and no trip would be complete without a trip to Centosa Island or boat ride on the harbour. Plenty of cheap shopping - some areas are better for electrical equipment (orchid road i think) and others for garments

most of the recommendations are spot on...but if you crave seafood...you have to go to east coast sea food place...for the best chilli crabs in town... and theyre cheap as chips compared to dubai...also have a pitcher of ice cold tiger beer to down it all...also go to newton circus food court..as it has the best food ever!!....great squid/sotong/sea food/rojak....drooling as we speak...then if you fancy a nice stroll along the river with all the bars and resturants...head down to boat quay and clarke quay...and again u will be assaulted by an arrey of choices...bugis junctions great for off the beat shopping..while orchard road is a shopaholics mecca...good deals to be had all year round...also botanical gardens has one of the best resturants in asia...HALIA...expensive but well worth it for a romantic date...SENTOSA takes a day taken care of with fun for the kids...and last but not the least....NIGHT SAFARI...fun for the whole family....hope that helps...

I think you're mistaking Sg for China!
I go there pretty much on a monthly basis and only use my CC.

Try chinatown at night for all three- food, drinks, and shopping. But it can get very touristy...
JeepDude
definitely recommend newton for seafood. boat quay is cool, several good places to unwind after full day of meeting, with cold drink and nice food. If you hang out until late night, try bike rickshaw to get you back into your hotel  I know its a touristy thing to do but it is fun, if you do it once that is. Haggle the price and just enjoy singapore at night, cabriolet style.
I tried once several years back, after some latenight at boat quay. took the rickshaw back to my hotel and the guy had a boombox under the seat playing a loud chinese / canto pop all the way. Guaranteed stares, smiles and laughs from other people long the way   me? i just tried to maintain my cool and my dignity, or what ever left of it.
have fun

Poppy,
Did you go to SG? tell us about it.
I'll have 2 "free" days there middle of October - staying at Grand Copthorne Waterfront. Suggestions?

1.Sentosa- Go over there on the weekend if you like beach volleyball,suntanning.....people watching.
2.Pulau Ubin(take a ferry ride from Changi Village)- if you like to cycle(you can hire a bicycle over there) and look at the rustic side of Singapore.(go in the morning and have lunch there-again weekend is recommended)
3. Drinks-Emerald Hill-There is a open air drinking place next to Centre Point Shopping Mall. Go right in from the sidewalk and you will come across three shops-No. 5 pub-crowds tend to be expat, Que Pasa-wine-mixed crowd and last Ice Cold Beer(pub)-mixed crowd
Hope it helps.
