Is that before or after the VAT man, Customs and Excise Department and the Gold Council find you out? To import and export gold in commercial quantities, you must be a registered dealer.
Buying a ring or a necklace here and then hauling it home is not such a problem, but once you get over so many grammes/kilos, you will be stopped.

So DK do you know how much that weight is? Does that only apply to carrying gold bars or jewellery as well?
Heading home in 1 month and have heaps of presents to buy and take back...

There is no set limit, however a very heavy suitcase that sets off the metal detectors is going to get opened! Likewise, walking through passport control looking like Mr.T is going to raise a few eyebrows and possibly further you an invitation meet the man in the rubber gloves...
They sell small gold ingots (by the gramme) or alternatively try the gold sovreign coins. Small and easy to carry.

Well, I was planning on the whole gold camel thing...

Whilst there's no limit, you really don't want to look like your currently dating Donald Trump or for that matter, Za Za Gaboor (Sp).... I think discretion is the key here....
You might want to try and be innovative. Some people may stop at three bracelets, 5 rings and 12 necklaces. But not I. It's all about "going the extra mile" if tyou're going to be a successful gold mule IMHO.
Check out this thread and do a search for "Prince Albert" Clearly I can't speak for you, but I can easily get another 1.5kg (sometimes nearly 2kg) through customs on the end of my old fella... Mind you, that may explain why I don't have much girth these days, but lots in the length department!
Happy smuggling :D

The old souk in Sharjah. All the outlets in the Gold Souk also. Price is pretty standard.

Not bought one for years, but got one in Sharjah for 600Dhs (about £80) and I reckon you would probably flog it in the UK for about £150. I am sure they are more than that now with the increased price of gold. See what they are on offer for in a jewellers in the UK. Normally they have been made up into bling bling rings as seen on Del Boy!

How big are the coins? More worried about the weight than anything else...
Any suggestions about where I *might* be able to get a reasonable bargain on jewellery during DSF?

About 1.5cm in diameter. A little smaller than a 1Dh coin.
There is no such thing as a bargain in DSF. The price will be the same, but if you spend over XXXDhs. you will get the chance to enter this draw or that grand prize raffle to win something probably maybe that you don't need and can't sell off if you did...
Bah!
