Saudis ease restriction on women drivers

scarlet "There has been a decision to move on this by the Royal Court because it is recognised that if girls have been in schools since the 1960s, they have a capability to function behind the wheel when they grow up," a government official said. "We will make an announcement soon." :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
craigindubai Not going to happen..... Imagine if they had women drivers ove rthere?? The roads would be as bad as they are here! ^ian^ [insert unnecessary but funny joke about woman drivers here] craigindubai Surely it's a matter of safety... How the hell are they going to see in the first place? gezza
Interesting article
Were can I read up about Saudi? gezza
Hahahaha. St.Lucifer That has to be the most revolutionary statement from Saudi Govt.

Seems like they've some serious Scientific/psychological experiments going on about girls/women and their brain growth.. reviewer
I wonder is how far they would go...but then this comes Dubai Knight Actually, you will note that it is a 'decision to think about it' rather than an actual ease of their stringent rules. Its a salve to the women of Saudi and probably a flase hope. The government have also looked at easing restrictions on single women being able to travel unaccompanied and stay in hotels alone...but again, its just an idea, not a decision. It will be another 100 years before any real change appears there. :( :( :( Knight Dubaidude007
I was just thinking that they would achieve this by commisioning a study of the feasibility of having women drivers on the road that will take a decade or longer

Longer, much longer.

Knight ^ian^ They'll probably form a committee. Best way to kill any idea. Dubai Knight
True story:
A few years ago (about 5) a Saudi woman university professor and lecturer decided to prove that it was possible for women to drive safely in the Kingdom. She and a group of likeminded friends, spent a day driving their cars around the city of Jeddah. She had trained for many years in the US and had an American driving licence. There were no incidents, they attracted little attention and they all went home very pleased.
That night, her father called a meeting of the entire family in his villa. There, in front of her husband and children, brothers and sisters; he shot her dead!
He was never prosecuted as the authorities said he had 'due justification'.

OK, that's another 'way' to kill the idea. scarlet DK that story made me feel sick Dubai Knight
Sorry, but that is how it is in Saudi. As you know, I have had first hand experience of it.
:( :( :(
Knight Concord Maybe they should ban the Chinese from driving - anywhere except China. craigindubai
As much as I love a good story.... And never should teh truth get in the way of one..... I'd really like to see the sauce on this one!!! Can you provide??? Or is this just another "one I heard" over the water cooler???
Not trying to be a pain here either.... :) Would seriously like to know if this is true or merely another urban legend... (Dubai style of course ;)) craigindubai
I'll seconfd that motion if you throw in an addendum to include Indian women......
St.Lucifer
Nest ur gonna say Indians and u've free roads everywhere :| scarlet Indians can drive ???? ^ian^
Indians are technically allowed behind the wheel of a car while it is moving on the road.
Whether they can drive is extremely debatable, but after being in Mumbai I have learnt they have a different definition for the word 'driving'. Dubai Knight
Not urban legend. The source is actually Kate Adie, senior war correspondent for the BBC.
I was unsure, so asked about it when in Saudi on an extended business trip this last year. I spoke to a very senior Saudi local in Jeddah and asked if this was a true story or not. He looked very downcast and apologised, stating that it was indeed true. They tried to prosecute the father, however the Sharia Court decreed that the woman had broken the law of the land and that, if the father had not shot her, she would have been publicly stoned for 'bringing her family into disrepute and being a disruptive influence to the fabric of Islamic society'.
Worse has happened in Saudi and again, the urban myth tends to start with a sad but true story.

After years of struggle we've an F1 Team of our own, an F1 driver ( with no podium finish.. poor cars r to b blamed) and a podium finish in A1.
And come to India, try to drive for 10 mins without hitting anything/ anyone and u'll realize how good r we at it.. craigindubai
With a population of 1bn+,you were bound to produce at least one good driver..... Eventually..... Dubai Knight
Don't think you can blame Karthikayen's lack of performance on poor machinery. He was just a long way behind the curve and lacks experience. A podium finish in A1 is worth what?

Knight ^ian^
When he wins it will be pure driving ability, until such point, it will be a fault of the car he drives. Assuming Indians follow motorsport in the same way they follow cricket. craigindubai
Or the Tyres... But most likely the FIA.... St.Lucifer
I'd blame it on the bad machine.. Considering, his team mate Monterio (both were paying drivers) also couldnt do anything better. Karthikeyans lap timings were almost all time better than monterios'. I agree he can screw up most of the good machines due to his inexperience..
curves were done bad ..but all i remember is his un-necessary tyre lockings
A1 is a good place to win as well. isnt it? Just waiting for the other guys to come along ..Karon Chaddok, etc..
India has never been high on motorsports.. we never had good cars or bikes in the market.. none had the money to buy them.. (roads are still pathetic) .. rewind some 25 yrs from now, we only had one car manufacturer and 2 cars in the country.. Mahindra, and fiat. So I think it is a considerable achievement.. not to the world.. but to ourselves.. ^ian^
and lets not forget the other drivers being TOO competitive! St.Lucifer yadda yadaaaaaaa craigindubai
What they really need to do is get control of the FIA, then they'll start seeing some results go their way! ^ian^
8) St.Lucifer We are well n truely on our way to world domination.. atleast in numbers.. ^ian^
A good friend of mine thinks India should be 'vaporised'.
The world just doesn't have the resources to handle the Indian population explosion. St.Lucifer And getting hold of FIA doesnt look like a distant dream...or we'll start a rebel FIA Federation of Indian Autorickshaws reviewer
Never doubt it from the start....  St.Lucifer Would like to meet that friend of yours.. perhaps i can make him understand that vaporising India would result in a decrease in the total land area ,which means a more populous world.. ^ian^
Haha, you will this weekend.
But I think where he is coming from (not sure about his methods) is relatively true. Indias population explosion does poses a serious threat to world resources if it continues to grow at the rate it does, and also put considerable pressure on infrastructure internal to India.
Something needs to be done to curb this growth rate. St.Lucifer
Oh he meant Indians??? Then the meeting is cancelled.. I dont wanna be only on the news papers frm the weekend and/or to have only an email address(if he's not armed)
hmm on a serious note.. there's been measures taken on that behalf.. most of the educated lot of my parents generation have 2 kids.. and my generation urban lots just 1..
but having said that ... 've also heard stories abt truck loads of Contraceptives, the supposed free supplies to help curb population explosion, getting mixed with concrete for stability and water resistance.. ( not sure if its just an urban legend) MaaaD
damn, are you sure this really happened ? a dad that was liberal enough to have his daughter go to the US to get trained, but shot her dead for driving ? sounds fishy to me. MaaaD BTW introducing ladies driving in saudi will have to be phased. Princesses first, and then other ladies. You might wonder why ? well because as anyone who has been to Saudi will tell you the country is pretty much segregated you barely see a woman ever. But now if you start seeing them in the street imagine the chasing, number throwing, and even running into a car just to get to "talk" to the girl. So if they allow princess first, everyone knows not to mess with a woman driving. And when that is instilled in the heads of the male drivers .. then you can allow women to drive. Thats just my take on an issue that is a bit more complicated than just saying .. okay women can drive.
