MaaaD, this is not an old version of phpBB it's the newest stable version of phpBB. :) with some anti spam-bot hacks applied which don't work already. :( because automatic spamming programs are evolving faster then anti-spam hacks...
V-bulletin that is considered the best commercial forum has the same problems with automated spam..
The only solution is to develop a custom software that will stop spam-bots..
and use it only on few forums... because popular captcha will always be broken by newer spam-software...

Hi there,
I think new posters should go into a sandbox for 2 to 5 posts and only allowed to post in new members and general before they can post elsewhere.
I've noticed a disturbing trend of new posters with 1 post coming and commenting on things such as:
Bob1234 (1 post)
Hi I'm looking for x
Jill1234 (1 post)
Hi Bob - you can find it at this website.
This is just spamming in another form, and a lot of forums have dealt with the above in my suggested manner.
Thoughts?

Sorry Ian, answered the other one before I read this one. I think this would be a good idea, because what I have seen with getting rid of the spam from the two sections that I am helping to Moderate, almost without exception they only post once. However most of the Spam still goes into General at the moment, over the last week I have removed about 40 - 50.

Of course it's a good idea, it came from Dr. D.
General is a brothel at the moment anyway.

I have a lil addition to Ian's suggestion (which is damn fine by the way). Made me remember about a forum I used to post in a whiiiiile ago.
So when you first join the forum your status is "new member". For a week you can only post up to 10 posts a day and create 1 topic. Then up to 30 and 5 topics if I remember correctly for another week. This could very well be our solution here against spammers.

I can see the merits of this, but it still doesn't solve the problem of the one time only postings, for an example take a look here;
As we know arnie has not been on much so he has not been looking in this forum, it is full of one time only postings.
This is why I am suggesting a possible screening process of the application, I am not sure how it can be worked though.

Then remove the privilege to create topics whatsoever in the 1st week. Doubt those scammers will wait 1 week before being able to create a topic...

guys there is something you are missing .. this is a free old version of PhpBB it is not feature rich and is very limited. Andyba will have to dish out some money if he wants to upgrade this forum and introduce some features to make all your wishes true.
Jamal
so i guess .. we just gots to learn to live with it .. im cool bout it
i mean you cant fight what you cant beat .. no matter wat u do there is spammin aint never gonna stop.

I think there should be less barriers here. Having restricted parts between veterans and noobs just creates unnesscary spam.

What are you talking about, if we opened up more of the areas the spam would increase.

not really because people who come in want to spam, will just spam anyways, but people who actually want to come and stay, will turn into spamming because of the restricitions.
Its kind of like a baby thing, tell a kid he can have it, he doesnt want it, tell him he cant have it, all of a sudden he wants it

In the sandbox you can safely learns the rules and culture of the forum before you're let loose on the rest.
Not only stops spammers, stops people getting off on the wrong foot. You'd know all about this.

Is spam really the problem or posters with whom the "powers that be" don't agree?

Well, spamming is a problem... but also newbies need some indoctrination before they get subject to the likes of HP/Mac, Jamal, Captain Obvious and Concord.
Dr.D
Clearly ^Ian^ makes a good point. The amount of spam in the forum is increasing dramatically and the mods aren't even tidying it up.
We definitely need a sandbox.
