Dubai Expat Forum - Suggestions

Rules for banning needed

kanelli I'd like to suggest some banning criteria for moderators/admin so that posters who post in a way that is detrimental to the forum can be dealt with in a fair and efficient way to benefit the forum. By posting the rules publicly, it informs forum members about what will earn a ban, which helps the mods/admin retain credibility when making their decisions and enforcing the ban. Banning shouldn't be necessary in a perfect world, but as can been seen from time to time on this forum, there are posters who create a lot of problems and discord and they need to be dealt with. For example, 1) Posters who make personal threats of harm to an individual or group of people. 2) Posters who consistently post hateful comments about others' race/religion/ethnicity/gender/s.e.x/culture. (yes, this can be subjective, but must be discussed by mods/admin for consensus) 3) Posters who spam the forum with multiple/mass advertisments and one-sided propaganda (for any purpose, be it commercial/national/religious/political etc.) I suggest that rule breakers be warned once by the mods, and any offending threads/posts deleted/edited if applicable. If the poster continues to break the rules they should be banned according to the rules. If anyone wants to fine-tune any of the criteria, or add any etc. then why not suggest it here. Please refrain from posting in this thread if it isn't on the topic of suggesting banning criteria that mods/admin can use to fairly and efficiently keep the forum in a good state.
dbxsoul Agreed 100% What a lot of people don’t realize is that “open forums” such as this are in the frontline when it comes to censorship in the UAE. The “Forum” is public, it is well know and well patronized; unfortunately all it needs is a few misplaced threads or posts and it would firstly be picked up the Etisalat content scanner and banned by the proxy, alternatively a complain laid by someone who takes offence at the content to have the site again banned by the proxy – or worse! This may seem trivial to some, from outside of the country easy, open access to the Forum, inside the UAE though unless you have a PC which bypasses the proxy you would be unable to view the Forum, bearing in mind that a lot of the posters and people looking for assistance seem to fall into the latter category. I’m not going to bother commenting on “who they are” as regular posters already know this; they seem to do this simply to antagonize the forum members, unfortunately creating the wrong impression of the Forum for new members. I also agree with the above - part of the fun/ charm of the forum is that people have their say, vent frustrations, disagree with each other and offer alternative points of view; there is however a line where an alternative view becomes rude, disrespectful or even hateful. bedro I also believe that new banning rules should be designed. It's not enough to warn spammers that they'll get their account deleted. There should be a mechanism to prevent any one from abusing other members. Not to mention the public image of this forum. michaeldubai if you do ban someone, how do you prevent him/her from re-registering under a different name? sage & onion
You almost certainly can't however it has worked out before with some errant posters that have been banned, they just sort of gave up their bad ways or never came back.
