havent seen this posted yet so thought i would let you guys know.. Du is taking reservations for numbers so you get priority when they start operating.

I hate to be a big downer, but what's the incentive to convert your Etisalat number to Du?

we dont know .. yet. But maybe better customer service ?

People don't really want better customer service, they just want cheaper calls.

Should be understood that they are allowing you to register your present mobile number which will then become a Du number with the prefix 055 instead of 050. You cannot reserve any number you like as the passcode is sent back to the number that you are registering.

Pray tell, what is number portability?

essentially if your number is 050 555 5555, if you decide to change companies you can still keep 050 555 5555, this is number portability in a nutshell the blocks of numbers aren't specific to a carrier or at least can be transferred between carriers.

This is exactly what I had explained in my previous post, except that the 050 would become 055, so what was Ian's question about then?

you will be charged per second not minute .. so i guess your calls might be cheaper unless you always finish them at 00 secs.

Dude that is a big except, if people can't call you on the same number they have programmed in their phone, your number isn't portable between carriers.

I thought the 050 was like 04 or 02 (Area code)

You can indeed book any number of your choice, it looks like the minimum booking fee is Dhs. 100.00 this will increase the more attractive the number. The reason for entering your present mobile is so that they can send you your passcode which is required to complete your booking.

Could you guys at least take time to red the info and post proper information.
The way this works is, you get to pick upto 3 numbers, you might get the ones you want, you might not. If you are allocated the numbers you requested, it'll cost you 100 Dhs per number as a booking fee, on the provision you take out a Du subscription package.
If you wish to have you current Etisalat number, but obviously with 055 instead of 050 then this should be your first choice as a number. As you are already the owner of this number, you get priority.
There is no straight number transfer from Etisalat to Du, this is how it worked in the UK about 10 years ago, if you were with Orange all number started 0777, O2 0797, Vodaphone 0798 etc etc etc, But now of course you can just transfer your entire number from one network to another. Here you cannot.
I have registered my current number and will decide whether to keep Etislat or Du, purely because people are duffers in this country and won't understand they have to dial 050 or 055, and I don't want loads of random calls.
Ok, understand - good.

Sorry about your day.
I doubt it, Dhs 100.00 to reserve a normal number, they won't be getting my business.
Mind you your idea of reserving the number so as not to get bothered later makes some sense.

Well I'm going to weigh up the pros and cons of each service. I'll see. But with the numbers being so cloe, I can see people always ringing the wrong thing and just callig the Etisalat prefix.

Ian its coming, Etisalat is not playing nice and Du wants to launch service ASAP .. so they cant wait till they agree on number portability to launch. So it was deferred to later stage of negotiations.

hehe i really think Du thought they would be operational by now and didnt forsee the slow negotiations with Etisalat via the TRA. So i guess this was an idea to generate some revenue while everyone is waiting ;)

Hey Ian, you know the answer already, it's the same as having a 2 or 3 digit number on your car.
For me, I like my 5 digit number, totally anonymous.

Hey qst,
I just got an email today from Du telling me about my reserved numbers.
*If you have chosen your current UAE mobile number in any of the above preferences and the number is allocated to you with a 055 prefix, a nominal booking fee of 100 AED will apply.
Number(s) marked as ** above are available for booking only if it is your current UAE mobile number
*Booking fee will be payable after allocation of the number.
If you have indicated your current UAE mobile number as your first choice and you wish to retain this with a 055 prefix, a formal confirmation of allotment will be given on December 28, 2006.
For all other requests, allocation of numbers will be communicated to you
at a later stage.
Many thanks again for your interest in du
Good Luck!
OK, so my current numbers are in the list. I just want to check - I'll have 050xxx AND 055xxx, right?
I mean Du/TRA wouldn't cancel my old number or anything like that, right?
I know it sounds like a dumb question, but just checking. :)

so if my no. is 050 3453450
& I register the same no. with du. I also get 055 3453450 ??
So whoever dialing any prefix can reach me? I do not have to keep two sims?

You will have two sims, 1 for Etisalat and 1 for Du, and since most phones don't support dual sims, what most people will likely do is forward one number to their other one, i.e. if Du's rates are cheaper they'll forward all incoming 050 calls to 055 and then use 055 to dial out.
They'll definitly be a period of confusion once this all starts.
