Bentoya in Shk Zayed road is the best, I love it.

Unlike Chinese food (where Dubai is really thin), there are a lot of quality Japanese eats around, from cheap but good Sushi, to fine Teppanyaki.
Some places that spring to mind:
Bentoya
Tokyo on the Rocks
Sushi Cafe at Fairmont
Benihana
I'm not a big fan of Yo Sushi or Sumo though.
Sushi Sushi at Century Village have an all you can eat deal but be careful. It is advertised at 129 dirhams, but then it's + +
so 129 + 10% service + 10% Municipality and it equals 156 dirhams... which is not really that good at all.

Yes rotten Japanese food.
No there is no smell to it - if there is don't eat it.
My Korean food experience was seeing pieces of meat and stuff circuling in a big bowl of boiling water in the middle of the table. I forget the name to that sort of "eating"...kinda of wacky..

Depends on a lot of things how it smells. Generally, if it's good clean sushi it's a nice clean, slightly sweet smell, with a hint of seafood.

Korean likes to dunk their cooked beef into raw egg (like a dip). They eat raw beef as well - but thinly sliced. Again dunk into the raw egg dip. There is also Korean sushi.

No. I am afraid, they eat dog

The reason was because in super cold weather, dog meat keeps you warm. Dog is "heaty" so it helps eating it in cold weather. - So I was told.
You see more dog stalls in north vietnam (eg Hanoi) than the south (saigon). I supposed it has to do with the weather temperature. When asked why they eat dog, the answer i got was "it tastes good !!!"
I love dog.

Eskimos are Asian. They walked over the Bering strait when it was frozen and walked all the way to Argentina - it took a while. I know this because Sage told me: he was there.

I love Japanese food and have tried a few places around here. To be honest, I am a bit underwhelmed by it. Maybe I haven't been trying the right places.
Don't recommend Yo sushi, once i went and found a piece of rotton fish on display...
Wagamama is pretty good. Not authentic Japanese, but great for a filling meal, especially great for Sake
There is a Japanese place on the marina, the name which escapes me at the moment. The sushi and sashimi is pretty decent, but the tempura is awful. No drinkies either
Shabu shabu is the best, too bad its too hot to do it here... but done correctly (especially if you eat with Asians) then it is the best thing to warm you up. Even dogs can't compete :D

Although you have a point, the argument is if it is a pet (and by large extend dog is domesticated, loyal, most family has one as pet and cute) then you dont eat it.

There is a place in Crown plaza to shabu shabu?! Please tell me the name, I've been craving it since I left NZ. I've been trying to make it myself, but lack the ingredients for a truly excellent one...
Lucifer: There is nothing wrong with eating a dog or croc or bat or whatever as such. I think the issue here for me is the dog is seen as a pet or cute and its not nice to eat something cute (ok, pretty bad argument). There could be worse things to eat

hmm no. The point is.. although one may feel odd that someone else is eating dog..there's no reason to condemn it..or feel bad about them who eat it. For example.. Indians, especially Hindu's consider cow /buffalo to be a sacred animal ( as in worthy of respect, not the religious stuff ) coz cows/buffalos live a 'giving life'.. Do u mean to say that coz they are domesticated and thousands of rural Indian familes've cows/buffalos and many of them actually lead a life from the money they make from milk and dung .. none actually eat it's meat ?

Lucifer: Please define 'Giving'. If that is the case, then it is possible to skew the argument and say that dogs lead a giving life too. Dogs give you comfort, provide you with happiness and love. They 'give' that freely.

Take a packed lunch and something to read. Also remember to pack plenty of water... dehydration is a killer.
Inform a friend where you are going, and when you are expected back. Make sure your phone is fully charged.

From Wiki..
In Hinduism, the cow is often, but not universally, considered sacred and its protection is a recurrent theme in which she is symbolic of abundance, of the sanctity of all life and of the earth that gives much while asking nothing in return. Most Hindus respect the cow as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. It holds an honored place in society, and it is part of Hindu tradition to avoid the consumption of beef.
I eat Beef.. cant think of eating a dog.. but i find another argument.. may b a bit more meaningful ..Dogs are carnivores ..

Ha ha ha!! The German shep probably ate grass because he ate something bad before and grass makes you puke... works on kids too... and before anyone asks, no I did not feed the child grass.
Daikoku is one of the best for Teppan, Sakura is also another favourite, not the one in Crown plaza, but the one in East Tamaki. There is a funky little Japanese place opposite Sakura as well which the name escapes me, but it is so fantastic. I miss Auckland asian food... especially T-mart and Tofu shop. Kiku is excellent and has always been a firm favorite of the Japanese community here in Dubai.
I knew the head chef quite well, used to teach his son. And the Japanese teachers would always go to Kiku.
That chef has left now but I have heard that the quality of the food and service is still the same.
Kiku is in the Meridien Airport Hotel.

Anyways,
Went to Benihana with some friends (licence won out).
The food was ok although I have a suspicion one of my friends did not enjoy her food but was too polite to say so (I think). I always ignore the "decor' at a restaurant as food should take precedence but at this place the sitting area for other than teppan stuff was an after thought. Essentially a few tables placed in the hallway with stadium lighting...
Burton, why did you post so late as Kiku is accross the street? Well, next time.
Did I mentioned, no food was left on the places - and enjoyed the company.
Then we discussed Filipino food, what is it? I tried some chicken noodle thing once, and some 'adobo" and one of those drinks with crushed ice, sugar (lots), coloring and jello. But beyond that...

I wasnt that impressed with Benihana too. The sitting position (away from the teppan station) is just odd. Who wants to go to a 5-star outlet (so I was told) and eat in a corridor facing an entrance? Truely perculiar! Didnt enjoyed myself that much, plus I was restricted from ordering too much.

Ha ha Touche !
There are 2 Tokyo on the Rocks. 1) In Garhoud, in the row of shops near the Irish Village. Suggest you take a Thai massage next door at Bliss before adjourning to the restaurant  This outlet do not do shabu shabu though. The number is +971 4 286 8060 2) Off Al Wasl road, near Iranian Hospital next to a supermarket (forgot the name!). Suggest you call the number above to ask for direction for thier Al Wasl branch. This outlet is adjoining to the shabu shabu restaurant. Apart from shabu shabu (not Japanese style though) more like hot pot chinese style, they also have Thai and Filipino food. Cant vouch for them as I have not tried them.

Its very easy to get stuck into eating Indian when you just arrived. Especially if you arrived by yourself and dont know anyone. Indian cooked food is within easy access. There are some rather good (and better quality) indian restaurants here, like Rupee Room (Marina Walk), Indian Palace (Ibn Battuta & Garhoud)

Shogun is excellent if you can venture out to Deira. At the moment is it not bad - or try going on a Friday evening. The worst case is 45 min for me leaving Lamcy where I live. Bentoya is constantly good for decent food. The one in Ascott Hotel is also high on the list. I think the chef from Kiku has joined a new restaurant called Kikuyu or somehting like that, it is in the Royal Khaleej Palace hotel, again on the Creek, Deira side.
