Atleast your lucky to celebrate ramadan in a muslim country not like here in the UK so dead no atmosphere at all. The best part of ramadan is the atmosphere.

The atmosphere during Ramadan is great. I love the outdoor tents with all the food and shisha. However, it seems similarly commercial as Christmas though - the shops are open till late and spending money is encouraged. (Okay, Christmas is definitely more commercial with all the knicknacks you are supposed to have to decorate your home etc.) Too bad every religious holiday on this planet seems to be turned into a business tactic if possible.

well on the other light it is family get together which some theist family lack......well i hav been to duabi during ramadan time last yr......it was fun how they get together and share the food which lacks in this part of th world
Kanelli u lived there for 9 months and stilldidnt get the essence.........i lived there with arab family.....they exchange food with neighbours, socialize with loved ones..etc.........here not many ppl dont even know their neighbours worse rearely talk with their parents......atleast mine.cos they are busy with their career crap

very true. one is supposed to pray more and try to connect oneself to god. one fasts to create tolerance but ironically most people starve and go on with their daily chores missing the real essence of the holy month.
kanelli
What a stereotype Sniper. You think that only religious holidays are the reasons that families get together? You are partially right, in that all countries have religious holidays that give people time off work and no family is 100% atheist - so yes, families do get together for holidays. However, families also have their traditional get-togethers that are independent of religion. I'm surprised I even have to explain that. Atheism does not mean lack of family ties.

Dude,
Ramadan is not about changing our live for one month out of a year and as far as I see it, it’s not about abstention either. It’s a month to remember why we live the way you do, turning from temptation and helping to remember Allah. It also provides a time for refection on all the things we take for granted 11 months of the year.
In reply to some other comments made on this post, I agree that each person’s life is their own to live and no one should be told what to do. It’s all up to the individual. I’ve always been a strong believer that anyone ordered to do something, will not gain anything from it be the prize religious, mental, metaphorical or tangible because their heart is not in it.
Hope that made sense.

I am not flaming, but could you define real Muslim please?
As a Muslim, I believe that every person's relationship with God is his own. I'd have a hard time making up a definition of a real Muslim beyond the belief in Allah as the one true god, and Mohammed (PBUH) as the seal of his messengers.

Fasting can help to curb animal passion, only if it is undertaken with a view to self-restraint. Fasting is futile unless it is accompanied by an incessant longing for self-restraint. The famous verse from the Bhagavad Gita is worth noting in this connection:
'For a man who is fasting his senses - Outwardly, the sense-objects disappear, - Leaving the yearning behind; but when - He has seen the Highest, - Even the yearning disappears'
Fasting and similar discipline is, therefore, one of the means to the end of self-restraint, but it is not all, and if physical fasting is not accompanied by mental fasting, it is bound to end in hypocrisy and disaster. - Mahatma Gandhi
