People …. Start packing!!

uaekid I just got this news from a reliable source. U.A.E has decided to fix it's multinational labor by making an agreement with china to replace all of you with Chinese labor !! the agreement is still under constructions but will be implemented by 2010 by slowly forcing companies to increase their employees Chinese percentage starting from 20% to 50% an so on. and that's for most labor classes.
And housemaids also will be brought from western countries like Ukraine . this is cool I'll have a blondy as a housemaid.
But hey there is an upside to this news, you guys will go back to your perfect counties where you have nothing to complain about and live happy ever after :)
It is panic time.
God. The looks on your faces is priceless right now LOOOOL
smoggie HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Please..... No more. I can't take it. smoggie We would never allow that to happen :D Chocoholic
People from Ukraine would not take such jobs. Hmmmm would like to see how you dealt with a bunch of communists.
Never gonna happen. Keep on dreaming. rudeboy i think it is already started. in the airport i saw many chinese directing where to go. even at the xray machines saw chinese helping the passengers with their bags. Oh dear we dreamt of so many things !
Turning our tents into mansions .. it came true.
Turning out camels to ferries .. it came true.
Turning our desert to gardens .. it came true.
Building mansions in the sea.. it came true.
Turning dunes into high rising buildings.. it came true.
So yaa we'll keep dreaming.
You left your country slaving for us and you are from the great united kingdom. So why shouldn't they. They are jobless and homeless like you were .why take their right to be what you turned into since you came here dear ? sharfraz this aint gonna not bother anyone!!!!hahahhahahahaha a deluded fools!!!! hahahahhahahahahhah  bedro
There is no slaving here boy!!! And you'd die on your trash and sewerage if only the lowest paid unskilled labors leave!!
You're making fun of yourself after all... Chocoholic Slaving, homeless? I think not! Most of us are taking you for everything you've got! Your ass is ours, not the other way around boyo!

Well said Chocs. If UAEkid is really local, I would suggest you have a look around. We are here for a reason...because you need us. I think it is printed on the resident visa "here for a good time, not a long time". Make no bones about it, you can have your dump-of-a-country back. We will all make tracks to our home (or other) country when we are done fleecing you for all you are worth. By 2010 when this place is a ghost town, there will be no labour force required, so your point is rather moot. Personally, I will be well and truly relaxed in the western (or maybe asian) world far away from here.
UAEkid...I think of Dubai as a giant LEGO city. You spend all the time building it, getting the fanciest new bricks, sets, etc. What do you do with it when you are done building? Like most children, put it in a box and forget about it. Maybe sell it on eBay? reviewer After all the post in this thread... I hate to see the look on the OP's face............and say something like ...OOPS I DID IT AGAIN......   puppypup The Ukrainian maid will make you her slave. sharfraz me YAWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :sleepy1: muslimbangladeshi
Alhamdulillah brother, it's all well and good to relieve Emirate of traitors like Chocoholic, but the best thing is to employ people from brotherly countries.
Having a single source country for employing labourers is a hazardous route as political, social or other problems may mean UAE will be held ransom by the chinese. It's better to diversify so you have alternatives. I hope the leader of UAE sees the wise ness in diversification for its economy, for its labour source countries.
I finally congratulate you and UAE for the wonderful decision to eliminate the traitorous kinds, that can't and won't want to adapt to the local society and instead think all high and mighty of itself. muslimbangladeshi
If you don't mind me asking, what is your job? What can be such a difficult job that most Chinese and Ukrainians can't do that? sharfraz expats are expats...and are not locals let them be from anywhere...they are all the same......unlike locals!!!! 8) muslimbangladeshi
Ignoring your 'uncouth' commenting style, I'd wager you are wrong.
There are many times more poor people wanting to be paid the salary level of Dubai or UAE, than the other way around.
In its vicinity, within 2000km radius, there are more than billion poor people who would take up a job in the UAE as it pays much better than back home. muslimbangladeshi
I fail to understand your senile response.
muslimbangladeshi
Where are you from brother? muslimbangladeshi
You sound a little angry. That's because I can't make any sense out of it. There is no Western or Asian (non middle eastern) city that is booming as much as Dubai. The UAE is a unique country. It is the story of the rise of a global powerhouse in the world of business, trade and investments.
Why do you think by 2010, in another year, UAE shall be ghost town? No indication points to that.
What you need is to chill down, realize what a load of gobbledegook you just uttered. Del
Training? Language? Their English has to be 8 out of 10. That's why I said 'most'. uaekid
who said anything about leaving, I said replacing dud. who is going to clean our sewerage if you all leave daaaaaaaa dubaidog
Bit of a kiss-a$$ there? By your handle I would assume you are Bangladeshi? I can guarantee you that the UAE does not see you as a "brotherly" country. Who are you kidding? With writing like yours, you should work for Gulfnews! Trust me, you are as (perhaps more) disposable as any of us here. You will never be part of this society, nor welcome, nor respected, so get off your high horse. The "traitorous kinds"...give me a bloody break. How can Chocs (or anybody for that matter) be a traitor to this country. By definition, you need to be a CITIZEN and betray YOUR OWN country, government, etc. Get real.
I'm sure UAEkid appreciates your advice. BTW, Bangladesh is 3rd on the list for luring workers here after Indians and Pakastanis. Expats are not expected to adapt to local society, are you kidding? We are OUTSIDERS, not "part of society"....where do you get the impression you are welcome here? As far as "high and mighty thinking"...I think you confused that for "grateful for what we have to go back to". Having lived in more than 10 countries in my life, I think I am able to form a decisive, objective opinion on where we are welcome, revered, etc. Dude, the UAE ain't it! uaekid
please sweet heart.. stop embarrsing your self ... your country ran out of moeny just months ago and just barrowed bllions from UAE ! didn't your sources tell you that, I thought you know everything.
it was so funny seeing your high GOV personal dressed up coming here asking for moeny LOOOOL who ever thought we will do this to the English uaekid
I would love that, stop giving me naghty ideas :) muslimbangladeshi
I know UAE prefers native English language speakers, but this job can be done by other nationalities too. I dont see why it can't be done. uaekid am I making this dead forum alive or what ? ok ppl talk to you after my gym.. dubaidog
I'm not angry, if fact the opposite. I am just shocked at our difference of opinion. "No indication points to that" are you kidding? EVERY indication points to that. I am chilled out. If I seem wound up, it is just because I saw the writing on the wall when I got here, just never thought the bottom would fall out so fast! "global powerhouse"...holy cow....it's all smoke and mirrors, my brother and you continue to fall for it!
Can you pass the Kool-Aid when you are done? muslimbangladeshi
Yes I am Bangladeshi. What is the guarantee of a Briton worth to us? This is a key question. Go ask people around the world and the response you get will be similar - to be British is to be duplicitous. Not many people trust the British (who are often synonymized with Westerners in subcontinent).
Britain turned the subcontinent and Bangladesh into one of the poorest countries in the world, when it was the richest entity under Mughal rule in the whole wide world.
The Chocolateman is traitorous for he is not being loyal to the one hand that feeds him. Citizenship is just a piece of paper, if your citizenship fed you, provided for you, all of you would stay back.

It's good to know. Billions of euros worth of remittances are sent back to Bangladesh from UAE, Saudi Arabia and our brotherly countries. I see no reason why we should trust a Briton's word that Emiratis hate Bangladeshis, when you don't even allow Adhaan in UK, when you are all fornicating, drunk, drugged, loitering in dead-end gang warfare, when UK killed millions of Muslims along with USA.
When Bangladeshis are free to enjoy our holidays, our religious practice in UAE without any interruption and enjoy GREATER safety and prosperity in general than in Bangladesh, why should I speak ill of our Emirati brothers? Give me some reason.
We don't need lesson on egalitarianism from Westerners the worst hypocrites low lives immoral lascivious and promiscuous beings that can exist are from your countries. muslimbangladeshi
2 billion people in its vicinity, willing to jump up and down if handed the chance to enjoy UAE's standard of living, safety, better future and be a part of history in the making.
Can you show me the indication that UAE is turning into ghost town? smoggie Alhamdulillah brother, it's all well and good to relieve Emirate of traitors like Chocoholic, but the best thing is to employ people from brotherly countries. Do you think they see you, a Bangladeshi as their brothers?? Serious question! dubaidog The newspapers are riddled with stories about how Dubai is failing. PERSONAL indications for me are the following: Car for sale thousands cheaper than any other like it...no calls SUV for sale 15,000 cheaper than others advertised...no calls Villa for rent 40,000 cheaper than other advertised...no calls I am staying in Dubai, just liquidating so I can leave fast when I am done here. People are leaving cars at the airport because they can't sell them! Other news articles I read just today...rents falling by 20%, tourism down 50%, car sales down 25%, no mortgage market, car rentals down 35%, salaries cut by 40%, not to mention job losses..and that is only on two pages of the paper. How can you post here with your head so securely inserted in your posterior? How can you see the screen through all roses? You MUST be kidding me, you are either high on infidel juice or have not ventured out of the house or read a paper or news article in the last 2 months. Forgot to mention. What is this "high standard of living you speak of"....99.99% of the 2 billion people you mention would be leaving the slums and poverty of their country only to enjoy Sonapour or some rat and feces infested camp in Al Quoz or Sharjah where they will enjoy sleeping on the floor with 20 of their "brothers". Give me a break As far as "history making"....yeah, we are all part of the biggest smoke and mirrors debacle in history. Proud to play my part...I can guarantee you the queue of people "dying to get here" is shorter than the line to get out. In fact, there is an article in last Thursday's "express" that typing centers are processing more labour/residence cancellations than applications. Oh yeah, I'm not British. arniegang
Get your facts correct. The latest report from the dubai central bank last month is gloomy for 2009. Dubai's current debt including Dubai Inc's losses is equal the the GDP total for 2009. Technically the Emirate is broke, as is DIFC (part of Dubai Inc).
The UK debt is far far from its GDP. arniegang Note to all Brothers Chocoholic is a Sister now to be known as the "traitor sister" or "scissor sister"   ArchitectRoel
It's JOKE time!
:wav: Chocoholic Excuse me! But who are you calling a man? Although I have to say I've probably got more balls than you'll ever have! Traitor? Hardly! You still don't get it do you! The UAE relies on us! It relies on tourists for income and investment, it would never be what it is today without us. It will never become conservative and will always shun the views of people like you, because the wheels of progression have taken it away from that conservative path and there is no turning back. Now you can either deal with that or leave! The latter I would suggest being the more appropriate to you. Bijukakkat
To: uaekid
As an Indian i will welcome these move dear ....bcs i dont want to see my people working as slaves for peanuts....for 700 dhs INR 7500(Labors), they can earn more than that in india....by staying with there family....
even if UAE govt pack them tomorrow itself....we have plenty of offers backhome....
Here..refer arabianbusiness dated 14/08/2008 Dubai Rose
Uaekid,
Well… actually you may have to start packing yourself pretty soon.
The Emaratis are becoming more and more a very tiny percent of the population, and soon the country will be completely taken over by the foreigners.
And guess what, you will be the first one to be kicked out.
We’ll make sure of that!!!
If I were you, I would keep my bags ready!!!
  rudeboy if ppl are really leaving dubaii or uae, i guess that means less traffic :D but i m peeesed off about property investing in uae. i have put my property up for sale and still bloody nothing :( Chocoholic
THanks Arnie! Now they'll be screaming for me to wear an abaya so you can't see me baps in my push up bra and thong hanging out the back of my jeans! :?
However I have been known on occassion to wear an abaya for certain events. They can actually be quite liberating, for the fact that you can get away without wearing anything else underneath! :) arniegang would need a magnifying glass to see your "baps" :   Chocoholic Oi! Ta very much! Cheeky bugger! DR, oh the locals will have all killed themselves in car accidents long before that happens. arniegang
:P :P :P uaekid
Every one agree to that but not bcz of you dear ! we all know that you guys are here bcz you are not good enough for your back home jobs requirement we all know that. but bcz of the fact that there is 4,000,000 jobs and we locals are less than a million. It doesn't need a brain to figure it out .that's if you have a functional one :)
And again the news I posted was to replace you with a more sufficient hard working people labor instead of seating your as* all day long doing nothing . you see sweat heart there are productive people and there are who think that they are productive.
Lets talk about you choco and be honest here for ones , what is it that UAE needs from you ? give me one reason, just one.NONE so stop using US and WE
We were successful in overcoming our independency on oil , now it counts as only 30% of the income after it was 100% and the investment you are talking about is all out side of the country, we bought half of UK alone including your major banks so you see we will still own you after all, even if we have nothing here. your citizens will make our income. you will have no other choice. You can kiss the glory UK ones had a good bye kiss,
I just want you to realize that we use to be in need for you and now you are nothing but ..what the word I wana use .. oh yaa ( damage goods ).
Now you can either deal with that or leave! The latter I would suggest being the more appropriate to you uaekid
looooool even the locals TEST DROVE you dear, when will it all stop :) ? the parties you go are not enough I see. Chocoholic Hardly, I wouldn;t touch any of you guys with a barge pole. Never know where you've been! Actually I know where most of you have been, that's why I'd never touch you! Chocoholic The reason I have left the UK my dear, is because I'm sick and tired of the influx of foreigners sponging off me and my hard earned cash! That and the crap weather. I've always been an expat kid. I might have been born in the UK, but I haven't lived there for years. Why should I leave! I'm having a great time here. So you better suck it up - dear! arniegang A new game "spot the local" Starting next Friday we all meet up at the Jumeira Beach Hotel Lobby. 1 point for every local with a prostitute 1 point for every local with his boyfriend. 2 points for 2 locals and 1 prostitute and 5 points for a local and other Arabs with a Young Jockey. Expect to score at least 40 points in 3 hours   Chocoholic You should also have points for spotting locals in bars in national dress, who then get into their cars drunk! arniegang

Gosh this is shocking news
 Red Chief Good topic, kid... I just wonder how quick most Westerners will have left Dubai... I have some experience that they had left another developing country during a year after crisis. Of cause they did it voluntary... As far as I understand from some topics they start leaving... arniegang
How many points for spotting a senior government official who gets in the Dhow & Anchor on most Thurs night drinking Guiness? uaekid god I would've earned a 100 point LOOOL thats why we issued an easy visa for your family arniegang LOOOOL beside ,, what are you poor ppl doing in such spots .. ohh I see you are one of those wanabe huh LOOOOL well these spots are for us dude, men with cash not for labors Chocoholic Or the head of police who keeps DOSC open till all hours boozing it up! dresden I don't know whats funnier.... This uaekid (read: uaedouche) and his funny view on life & people or Mr. Bangladesh (who seems to be awfully quiet now) and thinking that he is a "brother" to Emirati. Hahahahahaha. I think he was hoping that Uaekid would find his a job. As far as I'm concerned. You arab locals might be able to push your weight around here in your little country. Try that in a foreign, western place. No amount of money can save you from the embarassement you bring upon yourselves. Uaekid (if real) is a prime example of human filth. gafoorgk
very true.
but arabs here seem to be little bit better than what i saw in saudi arabia. if u want to see animals in human form, go live there for at least one month.
no wonder abt the picture they pose around the world. Chocoholic Yeah some do try it on in other countries. A Safa mate of mine told me about the time he was working in a club in Jo'burg, and some Emiratis thought they'd try the wasta approach 'Don't you know who I am?' blah blah blah, with their huge entourage. The bouncers just asked where the hell they thought they were, before giving them a beating! reviewer
 With this admission chocs......so tell me when do you go out wearing an abaya......forgot to say Im a part time voyeour    uaekid Rise and shine slaves. The gayboy is back.. So I see I'm out numbered here hummmmmm oh well it is more interesting now I got all of you low class ppl attention. beside the more you are the more right I am in what I say and that’s why you slaves are pissed of, it is about time a member is not kissing chocoholic big BUT* The more I see you mad the more glad I am joining your useless forum at least it wont be boring like everyone think anymore. Like the old saying goes, if you want to know someone ,touch him where it hurts the most. and I barely did and all of you slaves got mad. sorry guys , there will be no more pullshitting while im here. Chocoholic Hahaha Fila mou to kolo pousties! smoggie welcome back uae kid! Thanks for the minutes of laughter you have given over the last few days. Keep it up "bro" dresden
I mean no dis-respect to the locals here. Many of them just mind their own business and neither smile or frown at expats. After all we are in their land, but common courtesy should transcend racial/ethnic barriers.
However, some of them need to realize that THEY did not build this place. It was the foreigners. Who are the architects behind the "best" buildings in dubai? Who built the palm islands, the rail system?
I commend the sheik on his vision, but its execution and actual work was done by foreigners.
As an example, Ferrari has always been headed by an Italian. The design team is italian and so is everything else, but they dont rub it in anyone's face. They just pride themself on being italian and beautiful.
The nice things here are built by people of foreign nationality (not talking about the actuall brick-layers/construction workers, but them also). This is why I laugh hysterically when some random arab makes the comment "We built this place". NO, your sheik envisioned it, brought in people from foreign places to build it. Because there was hardly anyone from here with the skills to do it themselves. Its not the same thing. Just my opinion.
My point is this: Writing a cheque doesn't take much effort. The people who built this land are the same who are not even welcomed here. Thats the upsetting part.
P.s Seen some funny stuff in the America's regarding these so called Arab playboys. They sit in the line-ups outside the clubs for hours no matter how much money they flaunt. Finally they pay 10x more than everyone else to get in. Then they proceed to drink like its their last day on earth. Dance with themselves and their male friends and end the night by going home hanging off each others arms. And thats on a good night! This is not true for everyone of them, just a few who think they are 'larger than life'. Can i get a hell yes? :)

I LOVE UAE for this! Long Live the UAE. God Bless the UAE. &feature=related Speedhump uaekid you are a fool. For example all the countries that were once dominions of European powers and kicked the Europeans out ("we have freedom, woohoo....") have reverted to almost total collapse of their economies in 50 years or often much less. The once British-run ones have been a little more successful than the ex-French/Portuguese/Belgian, as they were ruled not as much by force but more by patriarchal methods, but still, economic collapse and corrupt governments came back quickly. Your oil will run out and you now see that all commerce is not as safe as you thought. You would look a lot more like Yemen than Dubai in a few years...... And who invented the Trucial States that have become your UAE? Yes the British...to stop warring tribes carving each other up every day. You owe us big time brother, or your grandfather probably would have been killed by the Baniyas up the road before your father could even have been born, and your sorry ar*e would not exist (there's a thought...) :P Go back to it if you want my friend, I can move on, I can do my job in almost any country in the world (not telling you what it is, but it's legal and still well paid, I'll take my money elsewhere as you don't need it !). Note to muslimbangladeshi - tell your countrymen in the UK to adopt OUR customs please and stop creating no-go areas in our cities and demanding we change our laws to suit you. EXCELLENT POST BROTHER! uaekid I shall not fight in this glory day (weekend) :) smoggie
you are no fun :D Speedhump
You're behind the times, Thursday is not a weekend any more in UAE, although it's hard to find a local that wants to work even on a Thursday morning.....yeah this country would work real well without Europeans....Read some history over your weekend, it may open your eyes. uaekid I shall not fight in this glory day (weekend) beachbelle This conversation makes me CRACK every time i come back to it!! Speedhump (on a camel or ferrari) ur post was very insightful and written with passion and knowledge, thank you. As for sage & onion's tea photo, that was the coolest thing in this post so far..LOL u guys really like your cuppa tea huh.. i mean u have a handy pic for moments like this! Whoever started, and whoever saved whoever's ass, UAE rocks, and so does 'Greatest' Britain, especially SOHO  I cannot begin to criticize the English though cuz i might never finish. At the same time they r my favorites and i do find them HOT.  rudeboy
lol hahah you mean engriiishhhh breakfast beachbelle It's about time we all stop pretending like we don't need each other and get rid of the "i can do it on my own, i dont need anybody" attitude. U remind me of myself when i was a rebel with my parents at the age of 18..!! We all need each other, whether we like it or not. All countries are somehow dependent on each other, in different aspects of course and in varying limits. But no country can "just be" on its own and survive without the rest of the world. So why not do ourselves a favour and enjoy each others' presence and use to it to learn about their cultures and introduce ours too. (now im like that teacher in KG class) Seriously i see UAE nationals happy to have expats around them- YES this is reality. They might complain and moan, but it is exciting and much more fun. Similarly, the expats are enjoying their new 'experience', more sun, a better pay, maybe not so much to save, but overall it's an adventure and this part of the world is much better than others, with 0 tax and other benefits. Those same expats (inc.me) might complain too and come up with a million reasons to leave (i dont get it, ppl r just weird !!) but at the end, they don't leave and they stay because deep down they really like it (not talkin about the ones who have been FORCED to leave due to economic problems, thats a different issue & a global one too). Imagine you lived in a place like somalia with all the pirates n civilian killings, alaska (freezing), nepal or bangladesh (sorry BROTHER just givin an example here). Count your blessings. Enjoy everything around you until it lasts. And stop complaining!!! biotch rudeboy
Thats a good message for the rest of the expats :D xero_ very funny thread  im enjoying the bashing  Speedhump
A nice balanced post beachbelle, you have the feminine compassion where I just have the male testosterone I guess :blob6:
This is a great place to be for sure. I do biatch a biat sometimes...about small things like traffic and thieving landlords, but those really aren't the big picture, which is exactly as you say.
And this next bit isn't a whine, because I know things must change, but Dubai was nicer a few years back when there was more sand and less buildings and roads, and people really were more relaxed! But hey, it's still great to be here, and also to be able to say that you saw this amazing city rising from the sand in a few short years.

RedKite Rudeboy asks:- How can brown be racist to brown ? How can brown put another brown down? Well Brits flood Dubai, Because of brown guy........ That "Gordon the Tax" made them frown!! I love to see people getting wound up by this. It's a shame that so many people have ZERO SENSE OF HUMOUR.

[1738 Swift - Polite Conversation i. iii.] beachbelle LMAO @ all of you !!! :blob4:  :P Speedhump
then our job is done... RedKite The oldest existing Welsh poetry was composed in the Welsh speaking kingdom of Gododdin [Romans called them the Votadini ] around Din Eidin, now Edinburgh, circa AD 600. "Y Gododdin" was composed by the Welsh poet, Aneirin , in Din Eidin, in the court of the king ,Mynyddog Mwynfawr [cannot get more Welsh than that!!] who ruled from his seat in Edinburgh, long before it became part of "Scotland". The Scots were Irish Gaels who did not even arrive in Argyll , from IRELAND until the 5th century.
The Old English classic is Beowulf , from circa AD 900. It was written in Old English or Anglo Saxon....a VERY GERMANIC language, foreign to modern day English speakers. It is very unlike Chaucer, in Middle English. French was the lanuage of England's ruling class from 1066 to about 1370 , so the Middle English which emerged later had 10000 words of French added to English's German base.
Yet "Y Gododdin" is 300 years older than Beowulf and is STILL understood by Welsh speakers. It has tight rhyme; strict metre and is full of alliteration .......and it dates from AD 600
Look at these lines:-
Ceredig caradwy gynran,
Ceimiad yng nghad gofaran,
Ysgwyd eurgwydr cadlan,
Gwaewawr uswydd anghyfan,
Cleddyfal dywal diwan,
Mal gwr cadwai wyalfan,
Cyn cystudd daear,cyn affan,
O ddaffar diffynnai ei fan,
Ys deupo cynnwys yng nghyman,
Can Drindod yn undod gyfan.
EVERY single line rhymes [ C is always hard...as in concrete{ scuse the pun} F in Welsh is pronounced as V . FF is pronounced F ] with the same ending throughout the ten lines. There is also internal rhyme and alliteration throughout, plus strict metre.
It is about the battle of Catraeth [Catterick] , when the Welsh of Gododdin in Edinburgh were defeated by far greater numbers of Germanic Angles from Northumbria, who had invaded from North Germany earlier.
In English, without rhyme:-
" Ceredig, lovable chieftain,
A ferocious fighter in battle,
Gold-chased shield of the battlefield,
With spears splintered, shattered,
And a furious ,powerful sword-stroke,
Like a man, kept his position,
Before the grief of burial, before the suffering,
Purposefully, he defended his post,
May he be welcomed among the host,
With the Trinity in full unity"
That is one VERSE of "Y Gododdin". There are almost 100 verses. It was composed around AD 600, after the battle of Catraeth . This written version was from the "Book of Aneirin" written in 1400. It may have been oral poetry for the preceding 800 years, but earlier written versions are probably lost. The rhyme and alliteration enabled it to be "sung" by the bards who were always welcomed and celebrated at the courts of Welsh leaders. The first Eisteddfod , or musical and poetic competition was held in Cardigan Castle in 1176 . Eisteddfodau are still held all over Wales to this day. sage & onion Thanks for this RK, very informative. Speedhump Now I can see you are 100pct Welsh....well done against the Scots yesterday.
The Irish were possibly versifying before the Welsh. There is extant written Irish language poetry which has been dated from the C6th. but not of the quality of Y Gododdin. I'm reading a book at the moment about C6th. Britain and Ireland. It seems that Aneurin was forced to compose the Gododdin (Y Gododdin) in the dark as poets were thought to work best that way
Also scholars dispute the dating of Gododdin, some put it as early as C6th, others as late as C9th (you have to say that its quality, as written in your example, does point to a later dating), but this is the hardest period of British/Irish history to date as so little was actually written at the time, after the Romans got bored and left! A lot of what we believe was only recorded hundeds of years later from verbal traditions. Most of the rest is from the written impressions of traders and delegations from currently 'civilised' countries like Greece and maybe even Egypt. RedKite Speedhump,
I note you have an interest in this Early British history. Have you read "The Age of Arthur" by Dr John Morris?
Arthur was only really mentioned properly in :-
Aneirin "Y Gododdin" Britain's Oldest Heroic Poem [ A.O.H Jarman ,The Welsh Classics , Gomer Press, Llandysul.....with English translation and critique ISBN 0 86383 354 3]
Y Gododdin says....."
"Cyn ni bai ef Arthur,
Rhwng cyfnerthi yng nghlysur,
Yng nghynnor ,gwernor Gwawrddur"
"Though he was no Arthur,
Among the powerful ones in battle,
In the front rank , Gwawrddur was a palisade"
Arthur was a leading Welsh "General" or "War leader" who defended Britain against the invading Angles and Saxons or English, in the 5th century. He may have "worn the purple" of Rome. Britain was ruled by Rome for 400 years[ from now back to Elizabeth 1st...long.long time] .
The Welsh of England [what was LATER England and Wales were Roman Citizens. Therte was a "Roman peace" under conquest.
Hence when the English arrived .....AFTER THE ROMANS LEFT BRITAIN IN AD 410 , they called the BRITISH....."WEALAS". the Germanic for "Romanised foreigners" . WEALAS = WALES.
WALLOON in Belgium is the same root , as is WALACHIA in Romania.
Walnut is WALNUSS in German.......the "foreign " nut of the SOUTH. The German nut being the hazelnut.
CORNWALL from CORN WEALAS and is is "Welsh of the corn" . Corn is HORN...or peninsula.
All the "King Arthur" stuff later was pure MYTH. There was no Round Table etc. Some are of the impression he was English.....when he was Welsh and fought the English. The root of his name ..."ARTH" is Welsh for "BEAR".....the animal , that is.
Where are you from ,Speedhump? What sort of work do you do in Dubai, if you don't mind telling us, please ? Speedhump Hi Redkite, I'm interested in British History in general, so periodwise have read here and there, absolutely no specialty. I didn't read that book, I probably would have skimmed over the title as one of those books about 'Did King Arthur exist?' of which so many have been published, and are usually as irredeemable as the books investigating the Da Vinci Code, etc. :D Yes, Arthur was a British Celt, so he would I guess have had the run of what we now call Cornwall, Wales and the western Scottish lowlands, and of course by the time of the C6th he already had passed into legend. Also by that period any idea that Britons were still in any way Roman or Romano-British I think was in their heads only, all Roman buildings has been allowed to collapse, paganism was returned (any worship of the Roman deities woud have been unrecognisable from the true versions) and the populace was living in enclosures with mud huts, the Dark Ages had begun. Anglo-Saxons lived on the site of Londinium of course, but they didn't occupy any Roman-built edifices, as archeological digs show. Latin was still spoken by some British Celts, but I believe this would have been confined to the monasteries, with only few people outside their confines having maybe the equivalent of an eight year old English schoolboy's French.... I'm a London boy, RedKite, and I work in the oil trade. How about you?
