Noob on the way...

Sydneysider Six months ago I didn't know where Dubai was... and today I fly from Sydney to take on a General Manager role in publishing there, starting Sunday! Before I begin my last day here in Oz, I just wanted to thank all the posters here for the invaluable advice that's been put out here. When my family and I left the US for the Oz posting 6 years ago there was nothing like this kind of resource on the web-- the depth of the information here is incredible! So many great suggestions, so much solid, realistic advice-- thanks to both those who have asked the questions and those who have taken the time to respond! I have just a couple questions myself if anyone can help-- 1.) i'll be cabbing the first couple of weeks but afterwards what are my options re: an auto? i can't buy until i get a res. visa (as oppposed to an employment visa-- yes?)? can i lease? 2.) i will be responsible for 2 teams-- one in media city and the other in bur dubai. 75% of my time will be spent at the bur dubai office. my family is staying in Oz so there's just me. any opinions on best neighbourhood for a 42 yo US guy? would be looking for one where i could eat/drink out somewhat regularly and am figuring on a 1 br on 75-90k range. bur dubai looks like the closest to the office but have heard it is loud? marina looks nice but wondering about the commute? anyhoo, tks for all-- will be amongst you in 24 hours...! can't wait to start the adventure!!!
Tropic23 Wish a great time :D Galactico Welcome great title by the way  sage & onion Welcome to DF V-Man Bur Dubai, near the Golden Sands apartments isnt that bad. Its not that loud and has many restaurants, shops, hotels, etc... And you may find a 1BR in your budget. Deniz devilsdiciple Welcome!! Bleakus welcome to dubai and DF hope you like it here emurella hi welcome , golden sands area is good i'm near there and have no problem with noise, marina is nice but traffic to bur from there can be a nightmare and it is tres expensive, good luck Lou Welcome, the marina is a really nice place to live good resturants, shops active life - new buildings. But at the moment there is a lot of building going on around there as a alot of the bulding are not complete - not noisey really just a bit of traffic around. And the rent is on the pricey side. If you are going to spent 75% of your time in Bur, i'd look at an apartment down there as the commute on Shiekh Zayed Road is a nightmare. Travel from Bur to DMC (media city) in the morning can take you anything from 30 mins to 2 hours depending on what time you leave. And same on the return journey. What I have been of Bur it is an interesting area, not sure where the best place to live is though. Could look here - for properities / - local newspaper publications - for international news Hope this helps get you started - welcome to Dubai!

BabyDoll Hi there. Welcome to Dubai.
You should definitely rent a car here. Without it is like a nightmare, not to mention the lack of freedom. But dont forget 0% tolerance here on drink driving. You can rent a car even without the resi visa. Some rental company just need to see the employment letter. Resi visa is needed when you are buying a car but that is only when you are taking a loan.
Its easier to travel from marina to bur dubai (during morning peak hour) than the other way round as it is against the traffic. And if your work hour is flexi and can avoid traveling peak hour, then it doesnt matter where you stay. Since you come from Sydney distance wont be any problem for you. Non traffic will take you 20 minutes from marina to bur dubai. Some would argue better lifestyle in the marina but bur dubai is more establish. Its all relative isnt it. Why dont you stay in a hotel for the first few week and then decide what you prefer?
Sydneysider just got etisalat setup at home so i can finally thank you all for your suggestions (couldn't login from work--dunno why) i initially ended up in bur dubai in one of the hotel apts there for the last 2 mos...just moved into creekside residence last week, which is good from me (office in karama) it has been the expected hassle setting up (another trip to carrefours for a drying rack coming up-- wonderful!) but i've enjoyed my experience overall. still in the honeymoon phase but imagine the onset of the heat will dispell that a bit still, great to be here and i am finding the forum more valuable than ever now that i am on the ground! alexandra welcome to DF
