Personally I've had a gutful of the spam and unsolicited advertising that continually gets dumped on these boards. Soopn enough, this will be just another marketers board full of advertisments and void of genuine contributors (I might be too late already).....
If it were up to me, and as has been already proven, it clearly isn't, I'd implement a new posting rule for Newbies....
NO STARTING OF NEW THREADS UNTIL YOU HAVE CONTRIBUTED AT LEAST 20 TIMES ON OTHER THREADS.
Sure someone could inflate their post count, etc but it's still a lot more work for them to do rather than just saturation advertising that seems to be occuring....
MC
No I don't think that is a viable solution. Many people come here specifically to get help and it would suck for them to have to post 20 times just to be able to open a thread about it. In fact, I can see how this will result in many more pointless posts.
I believe it would be better to have a report function on each post where users can report anything form Spam to abusive language and such. That way it would make their job a lot easier and clean the forums much quicker.
I'm a moderator at a forum that has almost 85000 members and we get a lot of spam too. But the report function is always handy as everyone hates spam and is quick to report. This also works for abusive language and any other posts that break the forum rules.

Sounds fair to me...
mrs Robinson
totally agree....I was surprised there wasn't a report function on here...but when I said something about it I got some sour PMs from a moderator...oh well....some people just are not comfortable with changes it seems...
as for the 20 posts...I like to start my own threads when I come on a board for the first time, rather than posting on others...

The first thing sage and i do DAILY here, is too remove Spam. Therefore a report to Moderator Button would just fill our inbox with something that we do anyway when we first "Log in".
Some people even seem to think that Spam on DF for 90 minutes is unacceptable.
Cant please everyone.

So the "report" function would only serve to clutter up your inbox, why not consider then the first suggested option of putting a minimum posting requirement on each new user??

Don't suggest anything... you're just wasting your time.
The Moderators enjoy their 'holy' status and anything that would actually remove the dependency on them gets poo-pooed almost immediately.

"Reporting spam to us" that as previously stated "we check daily", it doesnt remove dependecy from us at all, so i dont really see your point. In fact a report to mod button increases our dependency, quite the opposite in fact and duplicates what we already do.
I agree in sections like romance, there does appear to be little Moderation in terms of clearing out spam. I have posted a note to those Mods in our forum.
However it does appear to be going round in circles somewhat here.

This does not clutter your inbox or anything at all. I'm not sure how you guys have it here but on our other site, we have 2 extra forums that only moderators can see. 1 is a log taht keeps track of warnings users receive and banned users and such. The other is used for moderator posts and discussion, and for reported posts. Whenever a post is reported it is posted as a thread on that forum. If it is a straight forward issue whichever moderator sees it first normally handles it. If it needs to be discussed we would discuss it in that thread. Remember this is not just for spam, btu for EVERY post taht users think breaks the rules. Of course there are times where nothing should be done as the person who reported it was wrong. Believe me it makes things run so much smoother and also makes moderating a lot easier. With 27 forums, it is quite hard ot get through this efficiently.

Oh FFS......
If the report function will only increase the requirment for your input, then why not consider the limitation or some sort of statute on starting of posts?? What I'm trying to get rid of is unsolicited marketing and selling. Yes there will always be frivolous threads, that's the nature of forums, but it's the people peddling crap that annoy me more than anything else. If you are in fact managing the contributors and weeding out these people, then surely this will make your job easier as you can quickly remove them and then they have to go through the process of re-establishing themselves.
craigindubai
The thread below is exactly what I'm talking about (VOIP spam).....
Though mind you, since this thread got moved over to forum number 652, all intelligent debate has been supressed. So kudos in that regard.

Most spam is posted by robots, they aren't too concerned how annoyed you get.
Preventing new members from posting new threads won't stop spam, the robots will reply to existing threads. Which might be more tedious for moderators to clear up.

Today I implemented some anti spam hacks .
Now all new members cannot post links until they reach 50 posts and are registered for at least 10 days.
There are some other hacks implemented that will keep the forum cleaner.

I think either the polling question or the options should be changed. Currently there is a mismatch.

Yes. Sick and tired of this crap cluttering the boards.
No. It's a free world and I really enjoy spam.
I wanted to vote no, not because of the explanation, but because not all newbies are spammers - many are genuinely asking a question about Dubai. And many newcomers to forums are not as familiar with their operation as the more experienced users (FAQs and multiple search boxes notwithstanding).
