National Identity cards (again!)

Dubai Knight I read a fascinating article in The National today about the fiasco being created by the National ID card registration system. It would appear the average time required to complete the process at one of their 28 offices around the UAE, is 10 hours!!! The system is fraught with innefficiencies combined with a lack of knowledge and training. The website does not work and in fact leads you all over the place but not where you need to go. Chances of being thrown in jail for not having a card after 31 December, are slim to none.   Knight
Captain Australia The whole situation is a joke. The thought of wasting 10+ hours mucking around to get the thing is ridiculous. Imagine the economic cost of having basically the entire country take two days off. 10 to 1 they will extend the deadline when we get closer to 31 dec. Dubai Knight Apparently most of the offices are exclusively for Emiratis to register first, however they claim only 200,000 have so far. Either someone up top will step in and sort out the system or its going to collapse around their ears as a total waste of time and money and be disbanded. After all, its only another attempt to relieve us of 40Dhs typing fee and 290Dhs application fee. Add that up over 4.2 million people and its a nice little earner! 8) 8) 8) Knight sharfraz again? did we have that ID cards before?.... It's again one hectic thing to do....but quite a lot of companies have started to arrange for their employees., Once we have this ID card, its better for us., each and every time we dont have to ask what documents they require and never need to be bothered to collect the documents., be it for banks or buying a car, etc.,... its just we have to handover our ID card., it'll have all our information., just one more card to carry it along with our existing cards.., Dubai Knight
You reckon?
It'll still need 15 passport photos and a photocopy of the sole of your foot!

Knight sharfraz i read in gulfnews and i hardly remember., that an expat professional may apply in person or their company can apply., and i also overheard the talks went in my office that the hr manager and pro are getting ready to do something for this... If your message were right, i would update them.., Dubai Knight
I wouldn't get involved, let them deal with it and waste their lives.
:? :? :?
Knight pete t I'll get one in 2010 when the system works Tom Jones
Not sure if you can do that sitting in jail... :( :(
When the system works in 2010....!!!.???
You're too optimistic!!!
8) 8) DPS The online system crawls at 10 bytes per minute. The online application form 'forces' you to select a profession. There is no option for the unemployed. So now my 3 year old nephew is registered as a sales and marketing professional!! :D But a few guys who have completed the thing said the processing at the counters itself is hassle free. just turn up at the appointed time and its done in about 15 minutes!! Will look forward to more updates from others.....

I'm told the online form needs to be also filled out in Arabic. If you can't get an Arabic speaking person to help you with that, you can have it done at the typing desk for AED 40 or 45 (at the Registration Office.) motion so you dont get an id card by the 31st dec but how will they check whether you have an id card or not? if they cant check then how can they put u in jail :S. sharfraz they can check and they will. period. 8) sage & onion
Hey DK, can you tell me where to get the Photocopy of my foot, I tried in MoE and they threw me out, claimed that the cheese was tooooooooooooo strong sharfraz
Mr Khaled's Copy Shop
they are not good at the spellings...
you entered the coffee shop....
whose mistake is it now? firefingersx how lazy are you guys? it only took me 10 min, but you need to wait untill the last weeks, unless you are one of those who likes pushing & rubing themselves aginst other men bodies !! LOOOOOOOOOOOL sharfraz
they might waste...but they got the message that every individual has to
take it on their own.... :D Dubai Knight
Then you will just have to take it and spend the time getting stressed.
Sage: They threw me out of Mr Khaled's Copy Shop too, but I wasn't copying the sole of my foot!

Knight Tom Jones Now the National ID Card services are available at Emirates Post. No excuses!
CVB according to the EIDA this morning the deadline is going to be extended until Dec 2010. They probably meant 2009 but I suppose an extended deadline is inevitable really. Captain Australia
Well according to the news report on Radio 2 just today they said that Emiratis and Professional Expats may have their bank accounts frozen if they do not get a card by the end of the year.
I hope you are right though. Tom Jones This is the latest on this issue as published by Khaleej Times today:
No ID Card? Beware, Your Bank Account Could Be Frozen
Martin Croucher and Riyasbabu
13 November 2008
DUBAI - Adding more pressure on residents who are scrambling to beat the December 31 deadline to obtain the national identity cards, banks in the UAE are considering freezing accounts of those who do not hold the cards.
A number of banks across the country have confirmed they are looking into how they can cooperate with the federal law requiring all UAE nationals and professional expatriate workers to hold ID cards by the new year.
At present details are unclear, and it is not known whether the account suspensions would be levied only on the accounts of UAE nationals, who also face fines and restrictions on working until they get a card.
Expatriate professionals who do not carry cards will not be fined until 2010 but will not be able to access government services such as healthcare after the deadline for registration of December 31. “Consequences of not registering includes reduced services,” said Thamer Rashed Al Qasemi, Planning Director for the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).
“Some government and private sector companies are in support of this scheme… We are working closely with banks, which are also in support of this law.”
This is when an estimated 552,000 people are left to register for the ID cards even as confusion prevails among residents as many worry they will miss the deadline.
Though EIDA claims the facilities provided to the residents to register for the ID cards are sufficient, several people have to return disappointed after standing in the queues at the EIDA centres for long hours.
Many residents said they couldn’t make it to the counters as well as book appointments due to non-availability of appointments in November.
While the frustrated residents demanded an extension of the deadline, an official said the authority has no plans to extend the deadline.
