Penny (or peanuts) for your thoughts on getting an MBA:
1) No I dont mean Married But Available !
2) Does it help to climb the corporate ladder here in UAE?
3) Will your company pay more for someone with a MBA?
4) What about a MSc, will you get paid the same as someone with MBA?
5) For those avid (and I dont mean nerds), rate your schools.
6) Are guys intimidated by girls with higher education (such as MBA, PhD). How will this affect the relationship (gf/bf or marriage)
Thank you.
Jeevan
Too many questions and each can start a debate.
:) I am a MBA, it helped me in getting better interview calls. it helped in understanding my work better and plan better, and definately is helping me climb the ladder at a better speed.
I wouldnt mind if my partner is a MBA or PHD as far as she can hold a decent sane conversation

I'll provide the counter balance :-)
If you want to get an MBA because you're passionate, want to learn, and are focused on improving yourself... then Godspeed and let nothing stop you.
If you want an MBA because you feel the only thing stopping you is a piece of paper, then I suggest the effort spent getting an MBA might be rewarded elsewhere - an MBA should be about learning and achieving, not having a bit of paper.
Especially if you've already got a couple of other degrees
As for partners being intimidated by partners with MBAs, speaking with experience I can say it never bothered me, but then, I have very few insecurities.

1. ok, good.
2. nope, wasta rulzz
3. nope, that would probably happen in a mature job market, and that too only for two people of similar experience (person with higher qualification may have the edge)
4. depends on the requirement of the job (jobs not related to either stream may have no specific qualificatoin requirement at all)
5. am not an MBA, so no rating
6. Not intimidated; my wife is more highly qualified than me.

1. pass.
2. Yes.
3. Usually.
4. Depends on the job. Yes if relevant.
5. pass.
6. Depends on the guy. If yes, probably a sign of insecurity.

1.Could mean More Bigger Account (not english major)
2.Not necessarily it would get you an interview and perhaps a job.
3. Only if the client can be billed more for someone with an MBA.
4. Depends on job but see "2"
5. Kindergarden was fun, grammar school ok, high school cool, college great.
6. Not personally but some might be (but those are the ones who probably never met a woman with an MBA or PhD).

1) If you want to improve and learn more then proceed with the MBA, however hands on trainings and work related workshops help a lot.
2) Not necessarily, but it helps you get an interview. However, most corporations are looking for someone with experience. One of our secretaries was an MBA grad, but we're shocked she didn't know how to send a file using yahoo email & other basic office stuff (e.g writing correspondence, minutes of meetings etc). It became a sudden gossip in our office, then she left the company. :(
3) Nope. Our company pays higher to skilled & talented people with or without MBA. Some got promoted because of the significant contributions and improvements they've made for the company and most of them don't have MBA paper to show. Some got promoted because of the leadership skills they've shown & shine within the company, regardless of their educational background.
6) I prefer to be with someone who's a mind stimulator.

Is this not another reason to praise Dr. D?
I was just thinking, I'm sure Seth Godin or Tom Peeters has something to say on these matters, and before I could even hit Google, the D man has it here for us.
I particularly like the reference to networking!

I looked seriously in to doing an MBA but in the end concluded it wasn't worth it. 95% of the world's MBA's are basic business courses and are simply cashing in on the MBA reputation made by Harvard and the likes. Despite what the info blurb that goes with them says, most will not add a single penny to your earning potential, had you stayed in your job for the 1 or 2 years you took off you'd be earning more money. The only schools worth looking at are say the world's top 30 as ranked by the Financial Times or BusinessWeek. These will add significantly to your career prospects but also the types of jobs you get at the other end are likely to be all-work, no play so it's up to you whether you want that to be your life.
Do not under any circumstances do any MBA in a Middle Eastern university, not worth the paper they're printed on.
As for positives for MBA's, well they can be a way to change your career direction but often this isn't guaranteed, education is not a substitute for work experience in a given sector. An MBA will also give you confidence, leadership and networking skills, though again is it worth the money just for that?
A Masters (MSc or MA) is more specialised on e.g. Finance, the courses are the same basic content but a Masters will give you more detail in one area. However, over 50% of the course material will come from the undergrasuate courses so again you only leave with a slight advantage over fresh grads.

Put it more eloquently, lets make a business plan and buy a bank. but we will need to rob one first ! So ... I'm in. I can offer my chauffer service. I am sure we can borrow Tania from Bleakus. Anyone else?
chubbyhubby
It depends on which sector you are in and what degree/qualification you currently have and where u are heading.
For the private equity/financial services sector, MBA is fast becoming a neccessity. But if you come from an Ivy league school then MBA is not critical. And if you intend to switch careers MBA offers a good opportunity for you to explore or be explore by propsective employers. If you intend to do an MBA do it with a global recognise brand otherwise it may not be worth it. For the ranking look here

I think you'll need Jeevan to lift the safe. He works out 23-1/2 hrs a day.
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't let Ian know about this or you'll get the execution warning. Better you come up with a code name for the operation - like "harvesting dates - tis the season" or some unsuspecting code.
