Just got back from there.
It was a business trip, only spent three a half days there. But even that was enough to make you realize what an unbelievable, fascinating, wonderful place it is.
Used to live in Japan along long time ago, but never went to Kyoto once.
Am so glad I did now.
Saw authentic geisha in the old district, had obligatory photo taken with said geisha. Stayed in a 700 year old temple for one night. Ate possibly the best food ever - people always say that - but it's true. Drank brew with red-faced salarymen and entered the bizarre world of hostess bars.
Generally speaking, just got mesmerized all over again...
Japan is still not really a top holiday destination. It should be.
Or perhaps keeping it a secret is better...

Bro, my geography has temporarily given up on me! Where is Hakone again? Is that where you used to live??

I loooooove Japan. Who says it is not a top destination? It's on mine
Kyoto is quaint. Hakone is ok. Visit Hiroshima if you can, will bring tears to your eyes. Dont forget to visit Matshushima island as well. Hidden but very friendly village people. Back in Tokyo, I like the Chigasaki beach. Up north at the end of the shinkasen, akita and moriaka is beautiful during winter.
I so want to do the cherry blossom!! All this talk makes me missing Japan even more.

it's in Japan also. South of Tokyo, east of Fuji. It's got onsen (natural hot springs), mountain villages, cool fresh mountain air, cable cars, great view of mount fuji, etc... very laid back atmosphere.
As for kyoto, I plan to visit there next year actually

Heh, thanks mate.
I knew Hakone was in Japan, just not where in Japan!
It sounds beautiful - a bit like Nagano, where i used to live.
What were you doing in Japan btw??

Went there as a tourist :)
I think I missed out on the historical part of the trip though so I plan to go to kyoto next year. I love Japan really!
Any more tips to share about Kyoto, burton?
