IS THIS NORMAL PRACTICE IN DUBAI?

SouqExplorer Hello everyone, I need some advice on relocating to Dubai. I've been offered an interview but they want me to come to Dubai to do it. I'm currently in Canada. Is it normal practice that the job-seeker pays their way to Dubai to interview? It makes me a little nervous to think of the expense of relocating without an contract in hand. Do comanies pay the flight over usually or just the one time a year ticket home and back to Dubai again? Thanks for your help, Jennifer
Nik No its certainly not the practice for the interviewee to pay their way over, I'd be wary of any place that asks you to do so...They want you here so they should pay the way...Its a golden opportunity to come down here before you accept the job though as it will help you grab the lay of the land And as for when you do join, the company is obliged to pay for your ticket in, and out if you ever decide to leave. dbxsoul the normal course would be a bunch of written corrospondence, follwed by a telephonic interview at least. i would be quiet hesitant regarding the face-to-face, by law the employer is responsible for the recruiting and processing expenses of the applicant - although in practical terms this normally only covers the governmental paperwork processing this side. two suggestions, let us have the name of the prospective employer to check if he is on the "up and up", secondly does the package that they are offering warrent the gamble. unfortunatley i know of a few people who were "lured" over here with the offer of a good position, once they arrived, the "agreed" position was "taken" by someone else and the applicant offered a lower, more lowly paid position. they then found themselves in the situations where they had sold off thier possesions, left thier jobs etc.. they could either bite the bullet and stay with the position offered, or leave and try and pick up the pieces back home! if you want to let us know about the job and the offer, it's easy enough to evaluate them.. g/luck SouqExplorer Thanks again for your help. Warmest, Jennifer Chocoholic Hi, AME Info is a big online news and business site It's very well known across the UAE and is very useful. As dxbsoul says all correspondence normally takes place via email/letter/phone. But any company who would seriously offer you a job should pay for your flight out. Also you would be entitled to a yearly flight home - both ways. The Media industry is changing all the time here, depends who you want to work for, in what capacity as some are definately more reuptable than others. dbxsoul " But any company who would seriously offer you a job should pay for your flight out. Also you would be entitled to a yearly flight home - both ways" actually the above is a common misconception. under uae labour law the employer is NOT responsible for your yearly leave flight, this has always been included in expat packages purley to sweeten the deal. under the law once you are employed the employer is only reseponsible for your re-patriation flight at the end of your service! in the case of labour catagories most employees will issue the person with a ticket once every 2 years - i.e. they will get 60 days leave every second year and not 30 days every year (saves on flights amongst other things)
