HORRIFYING DOG ABUSE IN DUBAI-Todays Gulf News

Concord I'm just waiting (or rather hoping) that a few of those dogs get loose and maul some of those as$holes (not to death put permanently disfigured). That'll teach them a lesson or two. I read the full story a few days back. They keep the dogs tied and caged 24 hours to make them more "aggressive". But I suspect that Choco is right and those in charge of enforcing the laws may also be complicit in it... Bad publicity, etc. should be a good start. I imagine that some years back the story would not have even been published...
beachbelle Chocoholic Sadly many of the police are involved in dog fighting, so they won't do anything to stop it. The way animals are treated in this country is disgusting! KeithL I dont think the situation in Dubai is/was anywhere as bad as it was in other countries in the gulf. When i was a kid, my friend in Oman used to always rescue dogs who were shot if spotted on the streets  sage & onion
Are you serious?, unbelievable. uae75
Doubtful without a concrete proof Concord
Proof that the police may be involed or that animals are treated in a disgusting way???
If someone has proof where should they go? Read it again before answering! Chocoholic Yep, My vet says he used to have CID officers bringing dogs into him at 3am in the morning to be 'patched up'. The animals were owned by the officers and they were involved in fighting rings, but what could he do? Concord
Precisely my point in the previous post: "if someone has proof where should they go to report it". beachbelle The worst thing is, these aren't media reports/ stories, these were letters sent in by readers from different parts in dubai& uae, all reporting the same thing- which proves that it's happening more often and all over the place. GRUESOME, AND REVOLTING. SUCH A SHAME TO HAVE ACTION IN A COUNTRY THATS SPENDING BILLIONS AND ENDLESS ENERGY&EFFORT TO STAND OUT FROM OTHER 'UNCIVILIZED ARAB COUNRTIES', TO CATCH UP WITH THE DEVELOPED/CIVILIZED COUNTRIES IN ORDER TO BE AT THE SAME LEVEL. IF SUCH ANIMAL ABUSE PERSISTS, DUBAI WILL NOT SUCCED IN BEING A GRACEFUL/ CHARMING/MODERN/CIVILIZED/DEVELOPED COUNTRY, AND WILL LOOK AS BAD AS EGYPT/INDIA IN ITS ATTITUDE TOWARDS ANIMAL RIGHTS. I WONDER WHERE THE PEOPLE BEHIND THOSE DOG FIGHTS COME FROM. IF EXPATS, THEY SHOULD BE DEPRTED, AND IF LOCALS, THEY SHULD BE JAILED FOR MANY MANY YEARS. THIS IS JUST A PSYCHOTIC 'HOBBY'. CALLING IT A HOBBY IS INSANE ENOUGH. How can the likes of us help? Can anyone suggest what an average person can do to at least help in this? Should we write to the government? Im sure they know, and neglecting it. Perhaps things like this are at the end of their list, as it is not a big loss to UAE afterall. In terms of money/ trade, it could be a waste of time for them. But if more people start complaining, bringing it to the international media, they will be FORCED to put an end for it, and maybe create a law and enforce it. The next thing we will see idiots on donkeys beating with big heavy sticks. UAE should really not tolerate this.

Proof that the police are involved.....without such proof, it would be unfair to accuse them!!! Concord
You are correct. But lets just for discussion sake suppose that someone has proof (see choco's post above) my question again is: Where should they go to report that a police officer is involved/participating in dog fighting? uae75 uae75
To the exact same place you would go if you had proof that a police officer is taking a bribe, or was using drugs or was a thief! Why should this be any different. They are all unlawful acts. Concord
And where is that? And speaking of proof, do you have any proof that anyone has gone to report any police officer in UAE of using drugs, taking bribes or being a thief? If so then that will give people some level of comfort and encourage them to bring proof forward? Otherwise... Chocoholic BB, there are still cock fights here as well. Wander over to Fujerah on a Friday afternoon and you can see bullflighting. OK, not like the Spaniards do, the bulls just sort of butt heads for a few minutes, but still sad to see. uae75
Actually....yes there is a proof, and it was even mentioned in the newspaper a while ago, when they caught two police officers getting bribed, if i am not mistake they were working either in the Dubai Airport or Dubai Immigration!! But thats not that point, cuz before u go and file a case, u would still need some kind of proof. Concord Ever hear the expression "quit while you are ahead". Well, I'm cashing my chips and going home - thanks for playing! uae75
Only in the eyes of the beholder
Dubai Knight As a responsible dog co-habiter (I do not use the word 'owner' as I believe a dog is a part of your family and should be treated as such. As anyone who has met my dog will tell you, he is one in a million) I am disgusted by the whole situation, but dogs get a bad lot here anyway. They are banned from many of the public places where they should be allowed under responsible supervision and are chastised and villified by the local population. The irony is that certain breeds (Saluki's for example) are highly prized and get treated reasonably fairly. The standard of animal husbandry on the whole is poor here, unless you are a valued racehorse or a camel. Yet Dubai is better than some other countries and there is little we animal lovers can do to change it as it is a cultural difference we find hard to understand. Any cases of proven animal abuse should be reported. If the person responsible is a police officer, find out which station he is based at and then report him to his commander in a private interview. Be warned that concrete, irrefutable proof will be required, backed up by witness statements and there may be ongoing ramifications, but if we do not stand our ground, the situation will only be perpetuated. Go get 'em Floyd!   Knight beachbelle I think one way to get proof is take a photo with ur camera mobile once u see any form of animal abuse. This is definite evidence, and this is the quickest way to catch it. I also think-although im not sure- that if u and several other people are reporting the same thing, ur friends or strangers- it is taken seriously and the evidence would be that more than one person is reporting the same thing. There are many ways to stop those psychos once you see them. The worst thing would be ignoring it or having nothing to do with it. If u dont help, no one will and that's scary! jim27753 This animal abuse needs to be stopped, but how??? Chocoholic If you see anyone abusing and animal, then if you have the guts to do it, I always reprimand them. Take details, pictures, whatever and report it to the authorities. Apparently the Ministry has just agreed to tighen up rules and regulations with regard to the treatment of animals. However what the UAE really needs is an SPCA organisation, which has the power to protect animals and prosecute people for mistreatment. Sadly you can't expect much when you look at the state of the zoo and how animals are treated at various tourist attractions around the country. kanelli Unfortunately, if you get the municipality involved they might just seize the animal and put it down. We definitely need and SPCA organisation in the UAE. shafique I doubt it will be much help - but it's worth noting that Islam prohibits the mis-treatment of animals and perhaps telling the abusers this when you come across these activities may prick their concious.
A quick Google search for Hadith on animal cruelty threw up:

The Prophet told his companions of a woman who would be sent to Hell for having locked up a cat; not feeding it, nor even releasing it so that it could feed herself. (Narrated by Abdullah bin 'Omar. Bukhari, 4:337; recorded in Riyad [Ref. No. 28], Hadith No. 1605; p. 271. Also Muslim, Vol. 4, Hadith No. 2242. English translation by Abdul Hamid Siddiqi; Sh. Muhammad Ashraf, Lahore, Pakistan; 1976; Vol. 4, Hadith No. 5570; p. 1215. According to the English translation, this Hadith was also narrated by the Abu Huraira and by Naqi who had heard it from Abdullah; Hadith No. 5573; p. 1215. This Hadith has been recorded by almost all the authentic books of Hadith, as the Ref. No. 53 will show.)
Islam's concern for animals goes beyond the prevention of physical cruelty or even condescending kindness to them, which is a negative proposition. It enjoins on the human species, as the principal primates of animated world, to take over the responsibility of all creatures in the spirit of a positive philosophy of life and to be their active protectors.
The Prophet was asked if acts of charity even to the animals were rewarded by God. He replied: "Yes, there is a reward for acts of charity to every beast alive." (Narrated by Abu Huraira, Bukhari, 3:322. Also Muslim, Vol. 4; Hadith No. 2244. Also Awn [Ref. No. 32], 7:222, Hadith No. 2533. Also Mishkat al-masabih, Book 6; Chapter 6)
Mishkat Al-Masabih concluded from "Bukhari" and "Muslim" to the effect that: "A good deed done to a beast is as good as doing good to a human being; while an act of cruelty to a beast is as bad as an act of cruelty to human beings," and that: "Kindness to animals was promised by rewards in Life Hereafter" (Mishkat al-Masabih; Book 6; Chapter 7, 8:178).

Cheers,
