Hi everyone,
I have only recently tried to jump on the expat express! I have been offered a job in Saudi but it is getting increasingly unlikely that I will take it due to the current situation. Shame
Anyhow it got me thinking of pastures new and living somewhere that gets a bit of sun for a change! 8)
So my wife and I plumped for the UAE as it looks like a great place to live and bring up kids. I have three young daughters
Anyway I have posted my CV on the other forum but if anyone has any tips for getting into the telecoms sector it would be appreciated. My wife is a staff nurse who specialises in oncology so any pointers there would also be great.
Thanks,
Stevie.

well saudi sucks! dubai is something you are more used too.
well telecom is a big industry i think only surpassed by the booming contruction industry.
with good experience a good job isnt a hard thing to find.
also the a new project named something like health city will soon be under construction. that should provide some great jobs for the medical industry.

Thanks Fakespike.

The telecom sector in the entire middle east is definately booming as liberalization is underway. Here in the Emirates there is always more room with Etisalat for experienced engineers. Legislation has passed for a new entrant into the GSM market and in my opinion it shouldn't be any longer then 2005 when we see a 2nd operator for the UAE.
Best of luck and welcome to the forum.
Cheers,
D

Thanks smartd. Has the 2nd operator gone out to tender? If so do you know who is in the running or has the tender been won? I'm sure I have tried the Etisalat website and did'nt find a lot but I will check again.
Cheers for the insight.

The tendering procedure hasn't started yet. I think by end of this year things should start rolling.

Etisalat makes the highest GSM bid (From The Arab News, July 14, 2004)
RIYADH - A consortium including the UAE's Etisalat made the highest bid to become Saudi Arabia's second mobile phone operator yesterday, putting it on course to win the coveted license, a source told Arab News.
"Etisalat Consortium made the highest financial bid, offering SR12.21 billion, followed by the consortium including South Africa's MTN, which offered SR11.05 billion," the source said.
Egypt's Orascom was third out of the six bidders, offering SR9.8 billion riyals.
The highest bidder is expected to win the license to become the second mobile operator in the lucrative Saudi market, although it has to meet a number of financial requirements and the choice has to be approved by the Saudi Cabinet.
The offers of the six bidders were opened here in the presence of representatives of the consortia and officials from the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC).
But the media were kept out despite earlier promises the ceremony would be public.
A consortium in which Prince Alwaleed ibn Talal partnered Spain's Telefonica Moviles surprisingly made the lowest bid at SR6.7 billion. The consortium including Kuwait's MTC was fourth, at SR9 billion, and Samawat Consortium (Telecom Italia Mobile) was fifth, at SR8.7 billion. The six consortia, each including an international operator and at least five Saudi companies, were short listed by the CITC after bidders including Britain's Vodafone and France's Bouygues were eliminated from the race at the end of the technical evaluation phase on Saturday.
The government is expected to endorse the commission's choice, but the official said the highest bidder would also have to prove his solvency and deal with a bank approved by the CITC.
Otherwise, the commission will go for the second highest offer.
There are seven to eight million GSM subscribers served by the Saudi Telecom monopoly.
Hope this info helped you. Also, Emad one of the members are in telecommunication as well. Try to pm him, sent him mail about ur search.
Good Luck! Hope you settle in fast with ur family.

Another operator will really give the consumer good value as the rival operators will cut prices to gain customers. :D
That is, unless, they are in some sort of cartel or render price fixing to share the spoils but squeeze consumers. I don't have any knowledge of how this type of thing pans out in the Middle east. :?:
Hopefully it means you guys there already will see your mobile costs comingdown.
