Can someone explain the rules and laws of importing cars to Dubai?
Are there any restrictions?
Can any vehicle be registered and how much does insurance cost?

Not every vehicle is allowed here. Strangely the new Landrover 110 is not permitted as it is a diesel and does not comply with the new RTA emission regulations, which is a joke looking at the fumes being belched out on the Emirates Road from the 20 year old trucks...
The rules are available on the RTA website.
Insurance is based on a % of the value of the vehicle

Can private individual import a vehicle? So I need only a title and a cheque for 5% of cost, don't I?
Anybody has an experience?
By the way cars are relatively cheap in US now but local companies sell them mainly according to prices of local market.

I will let you know in the next 10 days as my personal import is on the boat right now. OK, its a motorbike not a car, but I am about to find out exactly how the system works. Or not!

Thanks for your responses everybody.
Dubai Knight please do keep us informed of the system and the procedure.
You're the only person I've found so far who has a pretty good knowledge of what is allowed.
I think you said in another thread that vehicles must be 10 years or newer right?
I'm assuming you need to pay duty as well?
