Driving Licence Debacle

BabyDoll Went to RTA to get an UAE licence and was rejected: Debate: Been driving for over 15 years. Possess 3 licences, one of them allows me to convert directly. But I hold a passport which is not from the 36 countries. Verdict: Need to do the friggin lessons!! Reality: They will most likely fail me, like most of the stories I have heard just so that I pay for a second round Anyone went through the same experience? Flustered...
Jeevan welcome :) thats how things work, orelse how do they make money, but hopefully u shud get it at the first go. How many lessons though? 40? if its that then it sucks. BabyDoll
they said 20 but then again if they fail me, i need to redo so another 20. if my maths serves me correctly it totals 40. so what is the difference?? worst is if they fail you, you cant retake the lesson for 1 month :?
I need to go around the Zabeel roundabout to see Modhesh. It cheers me up !!!!!
^ian^ I love Modhesh! Chocoholic I hate Modhesh - he sucks! Just out of interest BD, which country do you have a licence from to convert to UAE and where is your passport from. You could always take the decision to try and talk to the traffic captain, to see if he would authorise a direct transfer - it's been known to happen. Salik Chocoholic St.Lucifer Dubai Summer Festival Mascot -- Modesh but where's it conducted or where is it not ?? no idea... n y Choch 'It's Modhesh!!! No, no no ahhhhhhhhhhh runaway! '????? Chocoholic Because I hate him! Whenever I see the overly happy little yellow dude, I want to run over him and squish him. ^ian^ I can't wait for DSS next year, especially the weekly Modhesh & Friends cartoon show. I just hope they do an English version, or I've at least got my Arabic sorted by then. I have to admit, I really like the little fella! sage & onion Chocoholic wrote: Because I hate him! Malaysia passport.
By traffic captan you mean traffic manager located at RTA Deira?
Was the case recent or sometime ago.
Thankssss
gtmash I got on my 2nd try with Belhasa. My bro got on first try with EDI. On my test day, a guy gave me advice but ended up failing for the 5th time himself. Chocoholic Nope I mean the top guy, the big cheese. New Zealan is on the list of countries where you can just convert byour licence, they're just being idiots because you have aMalaysian passport. I'd go to the Traffic Department on Shk Zayed road, say you want to speak to someone in authority and argue that you have both a transferable licence and international licence and it shouldn't matter about your passport. Give it a whirl. Raniao people I know it is always nice to complain and complain. But here is my story with the driving license. I was not really driving much before I came to the UAE. Took the initial test and they told me I have to take 8 classes (1/2 an hour each) I took them in four day and got the driving test done. I passed from the first time. The commitment was inconvenient but the whole thing was short enough. By the way, I did the whole thing with Emirates institute. Was not that bad. So stop the conspiracy theories.

KeithL Emirates driving is one of the better schools... the less said about the others, the better Raniao one of the good things about Emirates Institute is that the instructor took me where the actual test will be done. So instead of me driving around Jumeriah and finally take the test in Qusais. I took most of the class in Qusais. I admit the trips to the Qusais for classes were not so much fun. But see I passed from the first time. BabyDoll My sentiment exactly. Thanks for the boost.
BabyDoll Thanks for the reply guys. Much appreciated ... Sui Hi , I went through the same thing. Have got a danish driver's license, including a US and a malaysian. But since I held a Malaysian passport, it is by default not recognised! The fault likes in our Malaysian govt not negotiating with the UAE govt. Wrote to the embassy here in Abu Dhabi but no response !! Went through 20 lessons. and passed the first time. Just make sure you remember the rules your instructor tells you and drive calmly you will be fine! The remaining 3 women with me flunked!! And they were really bad. All the best to you! dodgeek uhmm dude.... i've got a Malaysian passport and i got my license after 5 lessons and 1 exam for manual car. I'm not too sure why u failed..... its actually pretty easy! just don't make mistakes. and for your info i have alwiz driven right hand-drive cars and just had to get used to left hand drive. and to make matters worse... i didn't drive for 1 year prior to taking lessons (was posted in some awkward location somewhere in the middle east for nearly 8 months!!!!) ahamed gone are the old days in dubai. my friend got his lisence in 4 days since, during those days they used to give short courses & assesment test to decide the number of classes to be taken. i got my d/l in 7 days excluding thursday & friday and one the 8th day i had the golden card in my hand aite.. pay me 500 bux and i will get ur d/l done :D cheap_Deal so its now 40 classes even for ppl who have been driving for decades? can the 40 classes be finished in 10days (4 classes per day). or is there any limit to how many classes you can do in a day? ahamed vaasta habibi, vaasta people with international lisence are ought to take some classes, i dont know exactly what number of classes, but if you got good contacts, you can avoid this and directly give your road test. a couzin of my friend who has international driving lisence got his permit ( international lisence ) authorized to drive in dubai & he also got a rent a car on the same international lisence. ofcourse 40 classes can be finished in 10 days, if you have a good word with your instructor or whom ever you are dealing with, but what is the use, you still have to wait for other 30 days for your exam dates. no matter you give all your classes togather or day by day, 40 days wait is a must + delay of your dates :)
gtmash My buddy did 3 classes per day, but it was not daily. It is not special treatment, but a matter of what time slots are available. dodgeek ok let me cut a long story short. basically dis is wut happens (at least in Dubai Driving Centre, Dry Docks - january 2007) 1. i need to sign up for 40 classes and pay for it (around Dhs 2000) 2. wait 1 week to start classes 3. if u din do shifting then its 45 minute a class per day 4. i took the 1 class per day... 5. after 1st driving, instructor says i can probably pass first exam, so he says let him recommend the supervisor to let me take exam, i had to continue another 4 classes just to learn the tips and tricks, then he signed off another 5 classes without me attending it 6. now i've 'completed' 10 classes which allows me to take company assessment. i went there, i took the company examiner for a spin, he passed me 7. so the company arranges for my exam 2 weeks later. so on 4th February, I went back to my school for the exam. Fit 4 ppl in 1 car and off we went. came back, the examiner passed me and i got my driving license that day 8. bottom line is u can pass and get everything sorted out within less than 1 month. kris1863 congratulations... Im going through the same exact thing... just signed up for lessons with Belhasa driving school... theyve got a VIP package which lets u start in 2 weeks, and u can do upto 10 lessons a week... goodluck to us! harrysat why soo long time they are taking? xibit I think 2 or even more than 2 tests should be taken from every foreigner irrespective of their previous driving experience to bring them up to the exceptional standards of UAE roads and driving laws. This would create more revenues for the government and would even keep the traffic low. dodgeek VIP Packages??    dude....dis guys are real money suckin machines.... its not bad enuff that you have to pay for fukking classes that u dun fukking take coz u dun fukkin need them but they now have special 'PRIORITY' club membership!!!!! i was so god damn pissed off when I had to pay like 40 classes but only took 5! but what the heck.....just get the damn thing and forget about it. xibit ^ it is not about he money but to keep the uae roads safe and nice dodgeek so why am i paying when i dun need the lessons? duh..... :? rudeboy lol just go to belhasa pay the guy 5000dhs and u ll get a license. simple as that :D dont believe me try it ;) come on u in UAE corruption works here. ask a friend who probably has a friend who has a friend working in belhasa. pay the friends friends friend and u ll get a license. you wont have to go through 40 classes just have a test pay the guy and thats it. or better stop complaining and just do the damn 40 classes. yeh ur country aint there in the list, dont matter if u got this license or that license. if aint in the list u aint getting one :D muhahahaha i luv it kris1863 rudeboy... I wish i had that instruction before I signed up... costed me 4k to sign up anyway  asc_26
No wonder dubai roads are deadly. You pay your friends to kill your other friends in Dubai Roads. Geesh! xibit ^^ hes right i know a guy who bribed a sharjah cop, on the day of his test the police guy made the sechudle such that his turn would come in the end so he could pass him with out any one seeing sage & onion
Rumours, rumours, rumours    gtmash
Bribing is a really. My bro's friend is learning to drive manual after he "bought" his manual license in Abu Dhabi. Can you really imagine some of those rich snobs actually taking orders from an instructor? sage & onion
Still rumours as far as I am concerned ahamed i am still telling you, pay me 500 bucks & i will get you passed. this is not the first time i am getting some one passed. faisalimran I too have licenses from 2 GCC countries and after taking classes failed three attempts for flimsy reasons - attentiveness, lane changing - ridiculous!!! cheap_Deal
can you get me to skip the 20 or 40 classes too???
i might have to take you up on that offer ahamed @cheap you are taking d/l from sharjah arent you ? however, taking the classes have become mandatory. Or even if you are not taking it, you need to wait until your date comes. gtmash

Check it out;
BabyDoll Ok since I started this topic, its only fair to report what had happened to me. Here's the thing for anyone who is thinking about taking the lesson. Dont be lazy, go to Galadari in Al Qusais, just before Sharjah. If you've reached Sahara Mall (like I did) you are already in Sharjah!! Anyway back to topic, I didnt need to take up lessons. I went straight for the test and passed straight away. But of course this comes with many years of driving experiences in many countries - left and right handed. Or maybe female instructor is easier. And the damage is less than 300 dir. Time spent all in all 3.5 hrs  However do take note that once you get your automatic licence you are stuck with it. I didnt know I now cant drive a manual car in this country :( But then again no one explained that to me. Anway I am so glad I got the licence at ease. Concord
Congratulations, but once they gave Wafey a license I figure anyone can get one.
Never met you but I'm sure you are an excellent driver.
ps1. Not sure whether Wafey's is real.
ps2. I met you but you were sleeping both times!!!!!!!!! BabyDoll Thanks Charlie Brown.
But please dont insult me by comparing with Waf
Having said that, I was in his car 3 times and it wasnt reckless ... although I was asleep on one of them
The sleeper...
Congratulations, but once they gave Wafey a license I figure anyone can get one.

 What are you doing in my bedroom??
tsk tsk. mom says never to associate anyone who stalks !! Jeevan congrats;) one more to join the out of control traffic in Dubai  Waf got his license???? ^ian^
Waf has had his license for about 6 to 7 months.
How he got it still remains a mystery. Jeevan
if his driving skills are same as his skating skills god save all  the official drifter at karting  Concord
Baksheesh most likely  bonk
That's one licence, not two. DUKE
BRO U SERIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!
cuz i'm trying to get a license for 2 years now in shj and didnt even pass "katcha" assessment test !!!!!!!
what you say is true then give me an email !! faisalimran there are a number of instances like this including me, i have done four unsuccessful attempts and the story still continues.........the school also matters ......good luck BabyDoll
I have heard from all the male friends who needed to take the test failed. For once I consider myself an advantage to be a female in this country!! Or maybe the instruction straight from the Head Traffic Department helped.
Now tell me, how do they pass the taxi drivers ?!?!?! Concord
I'm I the only one that thinks that knowing how to drive properly would help!
p.s. starting to sound like Sage  BabyDoll
As De Bono says, "it's all relative". Especially here, what is "proper" driving? Cant beat them therefore join them ??!?! Remain me to never get into your car  BabyDoll
As De Bono says, "it's all relative". Especially here, what is "proper" driving? Cant beat them therefore join them ??!?! Remind me to never get into your car  sage & onion
Looks like the second time I have to agree with Concord, and wouldn't it be an absolute pleasure if everyone did just that; "Drive properly" dale if u dont know already waiting time for a retest is now upto two months...   DUKE hey guyz, if anyone can give me a "Boost" in getting my license, ...well that would be really helpful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cuz i'm trying for almost 2 years in sharjah.......& well i'm not even getting close......cuz i still havent passed my katcha[assessment] test
cheers & good luck to all KeithL
2 years
How many classes does that add up to?
I seriously suggest that you transfer your file to another driving school where I'm sure you'll have better luck Breeze At least they make compulsory to get a license here. I was told that half the population in Ireland drives without a license !!! can you believe ? But again they probably don't have half the accidents we have here which just shows that it's definitely a license to kill (not to drive) that you get here. Jeevan
Thats a thing i heard from most of the people, its difficult to get a license in sharjah Zarak Im new on this forum. I went for the driving test on Monday after 20 lessons. I passed on my 1st attempt. I have every reason to go for the 20 classes because im holding a Malaysian passport and a Malaysian driving license. Been driving since 1995. Good luck to all. Jeevan
all i can say is good for u:) i got it on my third attempt :) and i had been driving for over 10 years. i guess the cop just dint like my face. hehehe BabyDoll
not your face, its your biceps  Zarak
Thanks Jeevan. I was abit worried, but luckily i got it. Phew. If not, i have to go through 8 more classes before my next driving test and it will be a miracle if it takes a month. Just can't depend on taxi in Dubai. There is no proper taxi stand unless you are in City Centres. Jeevan
Might be the case:) orelse the sun must have reflected off my head in his eyes so he saw the mistakes i dint see  sage & onion I heard that if you have a British License you don't need to take a test, is that true? The Major That's correct! No test, just pay a few dirhams and they give you UAE license! One of the few benefits of being British these days....... gtmash
But....you guys drive on the wrong side of the road. The Major maybe - but we do have a thorough testing process - hence we able to otain a UAE license without any lessons. This is crazy though, as I honestly have no ideas of UAE road laws (I assume there are some) they really should make everyone at least take a short theory test if not practical! gtmash
I'd say they are all common sense. Roundabouts are of course free-for-all. But one difference at least between USA and UAE is that you don't get pulled over for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. You can actually fly through it if there are no oncoming cars. My bro ran into the back of a Canadian guy who jammed the brakes at a stop sign with no oncoming cars. Unexpected move by the Canadian around here. sage & onion
Where do we do that? BabyDoll The way the system works here is it depends if there's friendly trade between the 2 countries. One would expect you can drive in the UK with a UAE licence ... or at least that is what I have been told !! Breeze I think you can drive with any license for the first 12 months then you must take theory and pactical tests. That applies to all EU countries as far as I know. dodgeek has any of the complainants actually sat down and think to themselves..... "Hrmmz......they kept me out of Dubai or Sharjah roads for a reason....." but then again.....looking at the kind of drivers we have here.... i wonder how half the UAE actually passed their driving exams!!!! sage & onion
Hmmmm, there's a thought  ahamed and .. this is what happened later on: got my e-mail from df, recieved numerous emails asking me to get 'em passed i din reply initially to all, but i did respond to a paki guy, coz he wined like a dog that motha fuck promised me 800 dhs for feeding the driving inspector on duty as on the same day of his test, i took his details, got him passed, the inspector called me and informed me that he had the guy done with the test. and the only thing i hear even today since then, when i call dat SOB is innal hatiful mutharak ...... such a sob ..sucka .. ahamed so kindly, all of you loosers, dont e-mail or call me for getting you passed in your fuck drivin test.. hell with you all unlisenced tricky fuck heads! Medvezhonok
In Canada they teach you to make a full stop at a stop sign, count to 3, then move on. I almost failed my test there because I committed the horrendous crime of only waiting for 2 seconds.
On another note, I would approve an extra mandatory 20 hours of driving lessons for people who don't have the necessary prerequisite (a penis). The only time women are not driving recklessly is when they're not using the rear-view mirror to apply makeup, which is never. bushra21
wow, i would love to kick your a** Medvezhonok
Let me guess, you'd kick my a** but can't pay attention to the road long enough to get to my house? v8chris WOW! i will not run.... i will pay...... :D
