Abu Dhabi: The escalation of Iran's war of words against the UAE was neither understandable nor justified, according to Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
"This kind of escalation [of the war of words] does not serve the existing relations between the two countries," Gargash said in an interview with Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV channel that was aired on Saturday.
Gargash said he viewed the escalation as probably being related to the internal situation in Iran and forthcoming Iranian elections.
Reiterating the UAE's 37-year stand on its three occupied islands, Gargash said the issue needs to be solved through bilateral negotiations or international arbitration.
"Our stance remains unchanged. That is why we see this escalation as very unfortunate and unjustified," he said.
On whether this escalation could take a more serious dimension, Gargash said: "We have taken into consideration the mature relations between the UAE and Iran."
He clarified that there were three major issues of disagreement between the UAE and Iran: the three occupied UAE islands; Iran's nuclear programme and the need for transparency and credibility regarding it; and "topics related to what we see as [Iran's] political interference in the Arab world".
"On these issues, the Iranian side has its views, but that does not mean there are no other areas of mutual interest where we have cooperation and contacts within this framework," Gargash said.
He firmly rejected Iran's claim that its nationals were being mistreated at UAE airports and that the Shiite clerics were being harassed in the UAE.
"The number of Iranians travelling to Dubai is about 500,000. We in the UAE carry out searches for all banned substances, particularly narcotics, at all entry points such as Dubai airport. In 2008, Iranians accounted for 27 per cent of those arrested in a total of 238 cases of drug smuggling. We do not target a particular group of people in the searches, but we target people from certain areas for security reasons," the minister said.
"We sincerely hope we can start to solve the issues which are obstructing the growing and flourishing relations between us to prevent the emerging of new ones," he said.

well suprisinly UAEs Army is better then Kuwaits. But Irans army is huge. even if me and you were forced to join the UAEs army we would be no match to the iranians. mind you the UAEs has some of the advanced military warfare in its arsenal. some odd f 16s f 14s some new tanks and some UAVs too. you can say UAEs quality is far better then the Irani quality because they have Russian, chinese and North Korean stuff.

a long standing debate or discussion i should say between my father in law and i. he keeps insisting dubai has a military...well it is really a shared force with all of UAE. this force is nothing short of a peace keeping force. never seen them in action....dubai's military might is the white house and the vested foreign interest and investment in it. nothing else needed...

UAE does have its own military power.

if the UAE for some reason goes to war with any foreign country such as iran, it will not be only the UAE in that war, it will be the whole of the gulf countries such as saudi arabia, oman, kuwait, bahrain and qatar, its like joint forces which is called the armor of the arabian island.
same with any of the other above listed countries

there won't be any war here not in this life time, no country can afford a war in the oil this zone of the world, even iran it self.
