Yes they do work, however I've been reliably informed that the traffic Police have radar detectors, so you'd better make sure the one you buy has a stealth mode, otherwise you'll be in deep do-do.

maybe i should also buy a radar detector detector detector, so that i can turn off my radar detector when my radar detector detector detector discovers that i'm near a police radar detector detector. Hehehe...jk.

Some radar detectors have a stealth mode and detect when a police car is approaching, it then shuts down and restarts once out of range.
Try ebay for a start.

As far as I know, all radar detectors are illegal in the UAE, so I very much doubt you'll get one here.
