Yeah mate!
Still contemplating.....Golf gti 2003 for 40k/ford edge new/seat leon in white???
cant make my mind up
Hell of a price differential on all 3.
The Escape is a good car around town and on light sand... and not *bad* in the desert.... just we went over some tricky terrain.
Anyway, the dealer says 750 for make like new... so nowhere near as bad as I thought.
You are correct about the purposes of the Escape. Jumping into tougher terrain in a vehicle with no low-range gearing is a no-no, no matter how "offroady" they advertise it as. The dealer bill is surprisingly low. I replaced dress-up parts of my Jeep, and I got original parts from a shop in Sharjah for 30%-40% less than the rip-off dealer.
in terms of engine performance it did quite well... the biggest issue was not the gearing but the clearance, and most of the cosmetics was caused by the plastic scooping up sand. Of course, hitting a big bump didn't help and this is what popped the front right wheel lining. :-)
As I said... in the market for something I can smashup and not care (as long as I can walk away from it).

Oh nothing so serious... just all the plastic bits decided they didn't like sand and leapt off the car. Not too much... but enough that I think the repair bill will be a couple of '000.
You mean a Ford Escape if more than a couple of '000 new
Hahha.. yes. Not a big Ford fan myself... but they aren't a bad car.
I think I'll look to get some sort of Desert Ready 4WD second hand... something like a Warngler, as it was a lot of fun.

I drive one of them and they are pretty cool. Despite all the nonsense comments, there arent that many cars that can withstand the bash and being bashed in the desert. You are lucky only the cosmetic rubbery bits came off. Your Dh750 must be inclusive of labour charge. If not mistaken, labour charge is a standard Dh450 (I think). Pretty great deal I'd say ...
I went camping once, all the other cars needed to be towed at some point of time - except mine. Its not the car, its the driver ...

They are quite different. The edge would be more luxurious and confortable compare to the Golf. I drove the edge once and liked it. However you are looking at a price difference of about 80k !! But you can get pretty good loan with new car. Isnt there a promotion going on with Ford - 0% interest or something??

Interesting... if you mess with Concord... it might earn you points... but it will also undoubtly render you uncool and that is not good.
After all, if you were to follow the example set out by the Head Mods... IT IS a popularity contest... why do you think they have such a big issue?

You don't need insurance in the desert...just a vehicle that will handle it!
Being the driver of said stated Wrangler, before this thread got hi-jacked and double posted to death, and in defence of the Ford Escape, it actually performed quite well and the damage was purely cosmetic. Mind you it was funny watching the bits fly off! The desert virgin driving it also proved that it doesn't take long to learn the ropes out there and also performed very well!
Another Ford that weekend (Expedition) managed not to get stuck once and trundled happily over dune and hill with a family of 4 on board and the kitchen sink!
The best vehicle in the group was a Landrover 110 Defender...that thing is a tank and was international rescue, pulling everything out at some point.
Desert duning rocks!

Desert Virgin I assume you mean my co-driver - who once she got the hang of it was fantastic. I did feel somewhat like a rally car navigator whilst she was driving though.
Right, Left.
Nail it.
Full tilt.
Right.
RIGHT!
Other Right!!!!
Arrgggghh.
Whilst I've never driven in the desert myself prior to the weekend, I've ripped up Fraser Island in Queensland Australia many a times myself.
The biggest hurdle was working out that you need to turn the traction control off. Most of the 4WDs I've driven before do not have that fancy gizmotronics.

The other vital accessory we had no idea would be so useful, is a good strong winch. Going to be one of those bolted to the front of the Wrangler before too long...
