I know we have a lot of topics about traffic and crazy drivers, but they happen all the time so why not have an ongoing thread about them. I reckon I could make a post a day about the maniacs I see on the way to work. Maybe we can keep this thread alive for a while.
-------------------
Last week. It was the normal semi-congested traffic going out of Dubai towards Abu Dhabi and we were around Jebal Ali. Cars are about 10 metres apart and all going at between 120-130 so not much room to flash and push your way through.
Cue Mr 330i driver who thinks that everyone else is driving slower than 139 just to **** his off and not because that's what the traffic conditions allow for. So he's weaving in and out of cars and I can see him coming up on me.
I'm in the lane next to the fast lane, doing 125 odd. He's weaving in and out and finally tries to pass me by ducking across two lanes and passing me on the fast lane. He tries, and because of the fast speeds and sharp turning he starts fishtailing in the fast lane RIGHT next to my car. I can see him in my side mirror and hear him as he starts swinging back and forth as he tries to keep control. If he had swung out a foot more he would have tapped my rear and I would have driven straight into the barrier and then been hit again by him and half a dozen cars behind him. What a maniac. I don't want to blow things out of proportion but he literally nearly killed me.
So he regains control and pulls past me and rolls down his window to apologise (hands up etc). I blasted him. ********* almost killed me and possibly several others but it's ok because he's 'sorry' and was in a hurry. ******.
---------
One more, just for a feel of UAE traffic for the uninitiated. The other day I saw a Cayanne being followed by a Range Rover being followed by an Audi SUV being followed by a Merc SUV. All in the fast lane, all doing 200+, all within three metres of each other, all tricked out to ****, all (that I could see) with three digit plates. Boys out for a spin on a Thursday afternoon, but God damn, they would have been hosing them out of those cars had they tapped each other.
-----------------
So post your daily ****** traffic updates here.

Well I can't be bothered to write about the numerous idiots on the roads. But this morning I had a water rage incident, where some complete tit on a jetski puts one of my friends/wakeboarders in danger.
The knob head is shadowing my friend on her board, so closely, that if she fell, he'd have hit her, no two ways about it! Well all screamed at him from the boat that he's a complete tosser, he finds this amusing, circles around then does it again, then disappears off to do the same thing to a slalom skier.
So off we march to the hotel where he's hired the bain of the water from to give him what for. Chicken shit had already left.
Next time I'll be pulling my boarder in and go hairing after them in the boat and see how they like nearly being hit with a speed boat!
Captain Australia
God, the number of people killed by jetski's because people think they are 'just toys' is surely surprising. Idiots.
BTW: There is a Jet-Ski race going on right now off shore from the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi. I'm waiting for them to stack it but they all seem quite good. ;-)

dont want to sound redundant, but the fact is, the M.E is one the most dangerous countrry to drive a car in the world. Its one reason western families are careful to drive late afternoon and evenings when those guys are getting up and start driving in circles around town.
It is also known fact that some executives were reluctant to move their families here because of road safety.
As in the U.S. and Europe the police would filter those guys out when they see someone weaving in and out with high speed interfering with the general movement of traffic, the local police decide to ignore this problem by turning a blind eye on one the most important safety issue in this country.
In terms of driving skills:
The most talented and successful race drivers are from Europe and South America. No local talent, despite of what their self image might be.

today on the way to the smoke house a small tida or similar size piece of art crossed a few lines in front of us almost in one straight line and went behind a bus with a speed of around 130. now was there any car in front of him and next to the bus, this would have been a huge accident

Do you remember some day on 2008 where hundreds of vehicles were banged and burnt in Al Maktoom St. ( Abu Dhabi highway)and SZR and they finally had to shut down SZR for a while. That was really nasty.

Do you mean the 200+ car pile up on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway around the Ghantoot turn off? If so I remember that one. The highway was blackened and melted for a good 30 metres for a while, but then they re-tarmaced it. You can easily see where the smash was when you come into Dubai from Abu Dhabi. Right where the sign says 'Ghantoot' there is a 30 metre stretch of new asphalt.

Hilux drivers are mental. I swear they're a complete nightmare.
Once again, two complete losers, one in a Corvette (dick extension) and one in a Lexus, decided to try and climb in my boot over the last couple of days. The Corvette was so close I literally could hardly see him behind be.
I hate it when they tail, you make a big song and dance about getting in front, then suddenly brake right and head to an exit.

If I was driving my old car, built a bit like a tank, I would just slam on the brakes and let the tail gaters hit the back of me, teach them a lesson. But not in my shiny new car.
Maybe I could come up with some sort of pie throwing device, that launches custard pies onto their windscreen instead.

The other night , was crashing with a mate. We reach the inner lanes behind his house. His car was in front and mine behind. The car in front of him was a Vanquish with a fancy number plate( think it was 2 digits). This guy was tailing a chick who was walking on the pavement. Just three cars on the road.... suddenly the retard stops. Just stops! We can't overtake him cuz it's a one way road. My mate a Lebanese guy gets out of his car and walks up to this guy. He just stares blankly back and tell us to wait. Thats it! We contemplated calling the cops, but we were like screw it no point getting into a tiff with these people . So we just back up a long long way and leave.

Your post stinks of Ingnorance and racism !
"Middle east one of the most dangerous
country " WTF !
"
western families are carefull to drive late afternoon" Again WTF ! implying the only westerners know how to drive ?
Don't forget the same"westeners" get sloshed on the weekend and drive around like idiots on the way back from their parties. If I had a dirham for every drunk fool driving around like a idiot late at night during the weekends. Plus there are also quite a lot of western trolls who drive like they bought their license from a grocery store. So sorry " we western we drive good and you third world idiots, only be allowed to ride donkey carts" caveman logic is bullshit
Also "The most talented and successful race drivers are from Europe and South America. No local talent, despite of what their self image might be." statment sucks crap. You might say succesfull but you can never say more talented. A few from the region who have followed through in their respected sports have been quite successfull. Saed al Hajri, Mohamed bin Sulayem, Al Qassimi and the new qatari chap Attiya to name a few. And don't forget the Dubai Victory Team.
I actually don't get hassled much on the road, I'm sorry but having a luxury SUV really does spare you the worst and somehow people do think twice before flashing, honking, cutting you off or tailgating, but still not totally immune from it. But really doesnt bother me much.
Thing that does get my goat is people standing on the middle divider and right when your like 5 ft from them they think about crossing the road and step right in front of you

Well Desert Dude a recent survey counducted had made it rather clear that the bulk of the accidents were caused by Indians, Pakistanis and Arabs.
According to the stats, apart from the Brits, Westerners are quite ok on the road.
Getting hassled on the road thankfully has been a rarity for me. Although the above mentioned incident was a first. And I wasn't pleased at the very least.
I don't think it's right to keep blaming nationalities for accidents.....It's individuals. And with globalisation and the way the world is becoming flat, to keep blaming nationalities for everything is just gonna get retarded!

Aw come on we've already been through this already ! Anyways here the argument in a nutshell. BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MAJORITY HERE ! If 90% of the population consisted of brits then according to the stats would show brits to be the worst drivers and blah blah and blah
If you could get the percentage from every community here then that would be a diffrent story all toghter. Anyways this is a old topic wich has already been done to death.

Thats an assumption ur making.
Personally I've found Westerners, Filipinos and most Indians to be very civil on the roads. Except those really well to do Indians with fancy cars. Guess ego comes first!
We all know from which communities, worst of the lot come from......

Why does every post have to turn into a race related argument on this forum???
The subject of the post is about bad driving experiences with t!ts on the road.
Every race and nationality has its bad drivers - lets get this back on topic shall we?
Chocoholic
True! The people that really piss me off on the roads, are the ones that sit in the lane next to the fast one, just pootling along. They force people to undertake them, which is dangerous.
Every lane to the left of the slow lane, is an overtaking lane. Keep right people!
desertdudeshj
Well you can't blame them for being in the 2nd lane as the third land is usually blocked by people double parked with the hazard lights flashing ! because people have to park with in 10 cm of the entrance.
God forbid if they will have to park a few cars down the road and walk a few meters !!!
Captain Australia
Here is another one:
The other day I had to drive to Abu Dhabi, somewhere around 9th and 32nd street. I get near to the place I'm going and immediately notice the crazy traffic. It's a side street and only two lanes wide but there are people everywhere. Evidently there was a school or something nearby and people were going mad trying to find parks.
There are people double, even triple parked and everyone is beeping and yelling and stuff. They even had a couple of guys there who would take the keys of the double-parkers and move their cars if someone came. The office I needed to visit was right in the middle of it all, but there was no way I wanted to deal with all that crap.
So what did I do? I drove around the corner and a block up the road. There there were dozens of parks and no one about. It took me a good 60 seconds to walk through an alley from where I parked to where people were killing themselves to get parks.
WTF? Would it kill you lazy buggers to get out of your cars and walk 30 metres to get your kids? You could park at your leisure, save the madness of scrambling for a park and, god-forbid, get some exercise.
From talking to my friend who has kids it seems a common theme. Some people wait 20 minutes for a park out the front of a school rather than parking further away and walking for a minute.
What the hell is wrong with these people?

LOL Probally 8)
FYI : I never drive over 110kph ( wel not anymore for a long time anyways) even on highways and in 10 years of driving in the emirates don't have a single speeding fine ...Beat that suckas 8) 8)
Thats the problem with you tree huggers just because someone drives a nice SUV he is more eviler than evil itself, What gives. I would never drive a low slung car even if it is a V10 Dodge Viper because I'm too used to a high driving position plus I feel its a lot more safer and gives excellent visiblity all around and sometimes can see upto 10 cars ahead of me.
PS: I know a lot of people who eairlier didn't want to get an SUV ( expensive to maintain, gas blah blah ) when they ride a proper SUV and I mean proper not those gayroaders like Rav 4. Fell in love with the high posture, visiblilty and driving position and ended up buying 4x4's them selves. A dude actually forced me to sell my older R.Rover to him the same day he took a ride in it for the very the first time ! And atleast I use them for their proper intended use and not as a Jumeria Jane Mall crawler. Now I can't go Dune Bashing in a Tiida now can I ?

I have something good to report!
I was pacing along with a White Lamborghini Murcielago yesterday.
Young guy. I expected him to step on it, weave in and out, pretend he was Schumacher. Instead, he drove along, behaving all the rules of the road.
I actually felt bad for him since random idiots were hanging out of their windows with cellphones taking pictures, hardly paying any attention to the road themselves.

I actually find supercar drivers are usually well-behaved except for their parking manners. I suppose that driving a million dirham car sort of forces you to be wary of wrecking it. Some supercars are more well-behaved than others though. I find that Murcies, Enzos, and DB9s are fairly tame whereas BMW M5s, Gallardos, and SL63s are more likely to drive like life's nothing but a video game.

I don't think it was meant to be a racist remark MCL. Japanese made cars are well made vehicles.
Reckless drivers are behind the wheels of all kinds of cars, buses, trucks.
I'm sure if someone handed you a Hummer or a Ranger Rover or the like you wouldn't turn it down.

plus mini is pretty quick mate and gives you a video game feel, if you driving on a racing circuit. I have driven at few racing circuits and love them, but sadly too small for me as I normally would need a boot.
In addition, Nissan GT R simply rocks. Nissan, Honda and Toyota have some real fast and efficient cars and there is no taking away that beamers are great, but these cars are catching up, yet staying so fuel efficient and environment friendly.
I went to the Big Boys Toys and if the fastest car hits UAE, then we could be seeing people do 100kph in 2.1 seconds.

I couldn't be bothered with a Hummer or a RR. If I had one, I would sell it and buy a wrangler, that’s cuz I go kayaking and mountain biking and I need boot space. Besides the ultimate SUV is the Merc G55
Small cars are perfect and the new Alfa Romeo Mito should be something
There has to be more to a car than alloys and brand image....Half the people don't even appreciate the wheels they drive. Why buy a Hummer and struggle for parking everyday? Why buy a Jag and struggle to pay maintenance costs?
I know someone who owns a Volvo XC90 (got it for 40,000...was a company car and he knew someone in charge of the sale) as well as a Nissan Patrol. So this guy uses the Nissan 99% of the time and only keeps the Volvo a a status symbol. That's cuz maintenance and fuel costs of the Volvo leaves his wallet gasping.
I mean are so many cases like this where people own fancy cars simply to showboat, and I find that really sad!
People should learn to buy cars that SUIT their lifestyles.

I always found it funny that in most ways the UAE is so laid back with things happening when they happen, fairly loose appointment keeping, the insha'Allah attitude etc, yet when people get behind the wheel it's Fast, Fast, Push Push etc.
You know, a casual stroll with friends down the mall, coffee for a few hours, long chats then bang, in the car and flash flash get out of my way I need to get somewhere!!.
I know that it's not just Emiratis who drive really fast and try to push others out of the way but I'm just commenting on them here. I also know that not all Emiratis drive like maniacs, I'm sure most drive well but they are not the ones that stand out unfortunately.

That's what I was getting at. I've built drag cars as a lifelong hobby and getting something to pull a wheelie takes a suspension and tire setup that won't work on normal roads. You'd need a VHT compound-prepped track to even give drag slicks enough grip to pull your wheels in the air....
But that's just my car geek side coming out...

^No not at the moment. Yas Island Drag Strip isn't due finished until 2011, and UAQ Motorplex doesn't allow test n' tune nights for weekend racers. I belong to Evolve and ADPCC car clubs so we have short-track autocross races and whatnot, but no real drag racing yet, not legal anyways....

This afternoon - SZR - towards Dubai - in front of Jaguar Showroom.
Sitting outside waiting for my car and all of a sudden I see this car moving in reverse in the far right lane. Apparently he overshot the exit and was backing up to get to it - and I'm not talking a few feet!

I'm driving to work in the beautiful sunshine. I'm in the outside lane and we're all happily doing about 100 with about 10 metres gap. An arab guy in an FJ Cruisers comes screaming up to my rear bumper so close that I can nearly read the badge on his military style beret.
He flashes, of course. Presumably this has something to do with his tiny penis.
I didn't move over because a) it wasn't safe to do so and b) I won't be bullied out of the way just because his car is bigger than mine (I have a little Honda S2000).
A few k's down the road he manages to undertake and then swerves in front of me so that i have to slam on my brakes. He then proceeds to intermittently brake hard as if he's trying to get me to read end him. Obviously I just backed off.
What I wanted to do, was pull him over to the side of the road, drag the cowardly idiot from his car and give him a bloody good hiding. I also thought about reporting him to the police, but they're corrupt and totally useless in these matters. So I had a cup of tea instead.

As I understand it, you kept it cool which is a plus in itself.
What you didn't mention though is wether it was SZR with six lanes (in this case you don't have any reason to drive 100 on the outer left lanes. Just blend into other traffic for your two mile per hour takeover speed...
Staying in the left lanes with a bunch of other incompetent lefties that can't use the other 5 lanes properly is just childish. In Europe thats even illegal and doesn't improve traffic flow. In Germany they kill you for it given that German highways have no speed limit in left lanes at some sections. Its suicide to stay left and act stupid.
But it depends where you drove. If it was a 2 lane road and the right lane was full, then you did perfectly. But if you needed to drive outer lane with gaps for a right drive. You ask for it. Let the fast one go by. They pay a fine if the police camera caughts them. Don't be a Hero, cause the wrong guy will ram you to Zero. 8)
Its time they instigate some new fines for driving left lane when there is space available on the right lanes. Hope some of them sunshiners will understand that the left lane is for people in a hurry.
Bunch of incompetent wankers nowadays on highways

^Nah I live in Abu Dhabi, most of their traffic cameras don't register :)
And they can't report n' deport if they can't catch ya.
In all seriousness i've only outrun 2 pissed off locals from giving them the shower treatment, but not from left-lane slugging, from them trying mid-lane impatience because buses always take up the fast lane on Al Arabi street.
Always nice to know even if they can keep up with you on a straight road, the minute you take a turn they (and i mean no specific group of people) freak out when it comes to actually having to TURN and maybe understeering or oversteering a bit....
THANK you autocross school :)

Speaking on the mobile phone while driving "straight - in a line" is one thing.
But here's something new I saw today - a local taking a U-turn with one hand on the mobile phone. Must say - the guy's got talent - although if his left hand holding the wheel had to slip, the car would have wiped off at 5 people waiting to cross on the pavement!!!

Speaking of being on the mobile phone.
I would like to say thank you to those considerate drivers who when on the mobile and driving slow down to a crawl on the streets and 40km on the highways. Very considerate - NOT!

Oh dear. Do you live in dubai? Are you familiar with a little phenomenon we like to call rush hour?
I was in the left most lane because I was in a hurry to get to work. The left lane was jammed and all over six lanes were jammed too. Where would you have me pull over to? A parallel universe where SZR is traffic free and you actually have a clue what you're talking about?
What exactly you're talking about when you say "incompetent lefties" is anyone's guess. But it's a shame that you have to resort to pale stereotypes. I mean, are you a racist, you're German after all, should I use that stereotype?

IF you read my post well, you knew you had given us to little details for me to know you had rush hour at the time. Like I said in my post, every situation is different.
No matter how busy it is, incompetent drivers (with a need to drive on the left outer lanes) are always there.
If six lanes where full like you said, then you did nothing wrong my son. You was feeling offended obviously, since thats the easy way for most people. I on the other hand just gave a few examples on this situation you left open (6-lane and 2/4-lane roads) to show you my opinion on things.
We have 4 and the occasional 5 way lanes also here in Dutchy Dutchy land you know ;) One or two lanes xtra don't say much about driver style. So don't tell me that driving a car in Dubai is unique. I've dealt with the worst of drivers.
Its better to see my posts as neutral opinion, otherwise you are on a long way home before I am ready with you. 8)

Hey, I saw my first live accident today. Guess what? It was caused by an idiot driver who thought they were invincible.
I was on SZR towards dubai almost into Dubai when this idiot tries to sneak through a gap between my car and the car in front and the next lane to me. He obviously misjudged it and when he realised there was no gap he ended up smashing into the car in front of me.
We were doing probably 120-130 and he was probably going 160+. He did end up hitting the car fairly square on so luckily the car he hit was able to just stop safely. But the idiot in the other car swerved back into the fast lane and started fishtailing very close to the barrier. It was a miracle he didn't hit it. There was not much traffic so he manage to stop safely too.
Here is a diagram :-)

If could just image if he had tried for the gap and taken out the front of my car and the back corner of the other one.
What an idiot. I hope he gets charged with reckless driving. I gave the guy he hit my phone number in case he needs a witness or anything.

Not many people would stop to give a number and volunteer to make a statement. I saw a car go through a red light and hit a taxi and you can see that the taxi driver thought it was all over for him. I went back to where to accident happened, waited with taxi driver for about 1/2 hour, no police, so gave him my number with the driver who caused the accident standing near us and told the driver to make sure he told the truth because the taxi driver could call me as a witness.

Good on you. Being in an accident that is not your fault is bad enough but to be falsely blamed for it would be terrible.
I think this one is fairly self explanatory, but you never know. The guy in the Cayanne could make up something about the other driver swerving or something.
The guy in the Camry seemed confused when I offered the number, but I think he might just have been in shock. They all seemed fine, but it was quite a whack from the porsche so they might have some neck troubles later on.

This morning : On my way2the office , I noticed a small car on my left trying to take a right turn from the lane where I’m , I give him the way but unfortunately he missed out, it seems that he wasn’t sure abt the gap in between me and the turning beside it was little late 2make the turning .
I can feel his anger as he start extensive hand language which is means that it was all my fault4him2missed the turn. I change the lane and suddenly he over taken me, it was so close that I really did break so hard. He might think I’m just a little girl N start waving in front of my car. WTH ! I’m pissed at this point, I check around the road and find a chance to speed up and change the lane right beside him.
I thought he was some certain nationalities (sorry guys)by witness the heavy hand language N aggressive attitude but guess what, he’s a 50++Caucasian with little hair flying around his head. I drove right beside him since he has nowhere2go with one car in front of him and mine on the left before I over taken him to make the turning and heading to the office .
Why some people r so aggressive on the road like if they own it .even with such age, just wish he would grow in grace.

It sounds like culture clash.
In Germany to change the lane you need to turn on an indicator only.
Imediately after that the car besides you is slowing down and you change the lane. If some foreigner (like me :)) don't give the way after indicator, German is getting angry and anyway is trying to change the lane.
Probably your guy was a tourist who just arrived to Dubai. :)

RC, You know what will happen if that is the norm here. (Giving way immediately on indication)
No body (or read no one from certain countries) will wait in queue to an exit  . All of them will just indicate (or may not even bother to do so) and get in the queue as near as possible to the exit. All who abide by the rules will wait and wait in the queue forever.

It's a culture clash as I said, but the situation is not so hopeless and it has being changed gradually.
For example in Sharjah near Safir Mall, the toughest place in terms of traffic, motorists are getting given the way to the pedestrians. A few years ago I couldn't imagine that.
As for me I always give way people on any pedestrian crossing and a car that wants to change lane. For impatient motorist, who horns behind me in these cases, I always have my middle finger up.

I agree with you in that we should give way to a car which wants to change the lane. But what about the guys who try to sneak into the queues at the very beginning? I feel giving way to such an arrogant guy, is an offence to the people patiently awaiting their turn.
Is showing finger a good idea? I heard you could land up in jail for doing that.

Statistics are like clay. You mould as you need. The percentage of Expats from India, Pakistan are a few times higher than other nationalities. Most of the Pakistanis arriving here are on the driver visa. So the percentage of accident from these communities are larger. Consider the stat with the percentage of the people from other countries. Calculate on the same level of the expats from India & Pakistan. You will see the wonder of statistics then
