Connecting a Video Camera to a Laptop?

Coops Hi Everyone, Quick question :?: - i am asking for my hubby so if what i say doesnt make sense please let me know. Ok we have a Canon Video camera - and have recorded onto a minitape. Now usually to get this onto a computer hubby connects the camera to the computer via a 1394 (?) port. Now our laptop does not have this - so was wondering whether you can buy some sort of adapter to connect through a USB? and if so is there anywhere in Dubai you can get these. Thanks! H
cee_bytes Firewire(IEEE 1394) to USB adapter does not exist.
Try AL AIN Center in Bur Dubai if they have a "hub" with USB+Firewire[/url] Coops Thanks, we were planning on heading over there - but the traffic at the moment getting in and out after work is crazy. Dont want to make the trip if what we are looking for doesnt exist - so i thought i would check first. cee_bytes if i have time i'll check it and inform you ( i live few blocks from that place ) are u using a desktop or laptop? can u list your machine's specification? :bigsmurf: Coops hmm...well its a laptop....HP and it says its a compaq nx8220. I got the following from a google search - we havent changed anything since we bought it so i suppose these are the specifications?!: Intel Pentium M 755 (2.0 Ghz) 1024Mb Ram 80 Gb HDD 15.4 WXGA TFT (1280x800) 128Mb Dedicated Video RAM, ATI Radeon X600 Series graphics chipset, Internal DVD Supermulti, Optional USB Fdd, Touchpad Mouse, Internal 56K Modem + Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 - 3 Ports, 1x PCMCIA Type II Slot, Integrated Wifi 802.11b/g Adapter, Pentium M Processor (Low power consumption and up to 5 hours battery life * ), PS2 Socket, Firewire(IEEE1394) High Speed port for Video/Data, Docking Bay / Port Replicator, SVGA(RGB)Port, S-Video Out, Kensington Lock Slot, Headphone Out - Microphone In, UK Keyboard, Li-Ion Battery, Operating System Disk - Licence on underside of laptop, 3.0Kg, Windows XP Home SP2 ^ian^ Check to see if your camera doesn't also support USB 2.0 Some do. ^ian^
Well apparently it has firewire anyway. You just need the cable. Coops Nup it doesnt - those specs i copied off a random site just based on the type of laptop i have. I dont actually know what the port looks like - trying to get some info for hubby who only knows marginally more than me! If its connected via the USB the image size or something is smaller? not the same quality apparently. Problem is we have already a whole tape of stuff we wanted to transfer to PC, and now are a bit stuck! Its difficult trying to figure this stuff out when i have no idea what i am talking about! Appreciate the help anyway! cee_bytes Coops, based on your specs you have the Firewire(IEEE1394) High Speed port for Video/Data. :toothy8: Coops What does the port look like? I am only assuming we dont have it because hubby said we didnt. Would be good to go home and show him that it was there all along! Checking out the HP site now to see if it gives me any clues.

Hubby has the cable, as he used to use it with our desktop at home....hmmm....not sure how he missed the port. Going to call him now and tell him he is an idiot! Thanks for your help! Even though i feel really stupid at the moment! :? cee_bytes :geek:
