No! You absolutely cannot go topless not even in the hotels. It's a muslim country! Some women do wera the g-string or thong bikini bottoms, however I also think this is pushing the boundary abit too much. Particularly when you have people crying and whining about being stared at by guys on the beach, well sorry but if you have your arse on display what the hell to you expect.
jenny21
so the is a lot of g-strings but i'm not allowed 2 go topless?

I have to agree, how dumb can you be to want to come to Dubai and expect to put everything on show,m do some research for goodness sake. Very few women wear thongs on the beach and they're pretty much frowned at. It's too much!
Many people are starting to object to bikini's on the public beaches now.
If you want to flaunt it go on holiday somewhere else.

i supose that in a hotel pool tha situation is different, isn't it?
MaaaD
raidah: those were some hot thongs :P
jenny: if your on a public beach i would avoid both, in a private pool or a hotel beach i would say you can getaway with a g-string. But i am not sure if they will be fine with topless bathing. I know a woman used to bathe topless at my apartment complex swimming pool and no one said anything. Also if you feel compelled to wear thongs while here your more than welcome to my bedroom :P

Maaad, DOn't encourage her, it't totally disrespectful! And no it's not tolerated in the hotels, you try it and a lifeguard or other member of staff will reprimand you within a few seconds.
Don't forget hotels are also shared by guests of all cultures and backgrounds.
You cannot go topless and that's that, unless you fancy spending a few days behind bars for indecent exposure and insulting the local culture.

Actually you'd be surrpised. Many places in Europe frown on topless sunbathing as well, particularly on family beaches. That's why there's reserved nudist beaches.

Choco what is the right thing to wear on a public beach, i mean what i common and girls can wear without being stared at?
Chocoholic
Just a normal sized bikini or swim suit. Take a sarong to wrap around when the nutters start to stare though. It happens all the time. But I've seen women lately with the smallest thongs and it just looks awful and people can't help staring. An interesting article on this subject was published recently where workers gave their opinions on women on the beaches and guy was quoted as saying, 'If I come to the beach and I'm presented with a half naked woman, of course I'm going to stare! I can't help it!'
For many of us who come from other countries, to wear what we do on the beach or not as the case may be is totally normal. But you're not in a normal environment here. People come from places where women are covered from head to toe, you see ladies wearing full abayas and veils to the beach, so what do you think? It's a crazy mix an we do not have the right to force people accept our way of living.
Even in hotels people can find small swim wear offensive.
For you it might seem normal, but stop and think about the embarrassement you might be causing someone else.
Chocoholic
And Maaad, in answer to your question, no I have nothing against womens breast, I think they're one of the most beatiful and natural things on the human body (a womans that is - not man boobs!).
I'm quite happy to go topless, but in places I know it's acceptable.

well it's crazy to go topless on a public beach in dubai , just i was wondering what is the "normal " thing to wear. thanks for the info
and i do agree with u that as long as u r a "guest " in a muslim country u must at least show some respect for their values...and it's common sense not to shake ur bootie in a g string in front of kids and families where the woman is all covered up!

the Question posted; Can girls wear tongs on the beach? can be answered: Yes. However the most important question is: Should They? I submit the answers is almost always: Absolutely Not. Most of these women wearing thongs (forget the religious angle) should not even be wearing full body suits (they should invest time on mirrors). At least most of the one's I've seen in Dubai Beaches. I think they are more daring once in Dubai as no one they know is likely to run into them and burst out laughing...

in the usa i saw young women who were ssssooooooo fat, that i would lock myself in the house if i were like that. still they had stretch miniskirts on, and so easy and natural about theirselves that u coulnd not judge them.

I go topless on the beach...why not her? Tskk...double standards these days!
On a serious note...I asked a local mate who is 'connected' here (read that as size 10 sandals and says 'Salam Aleikhoum All') and the penalty for an indecent act such as going topless on ANY beach here (private or public) is a 1 month prison sentence and deportation...however they would probably just deport you on the spot in reality...so the answer is: Don't do it and keep that halter neck done up!
Thongs: Sort of accepted on the private beaches at hotels but frowned at (stared, ogled, drooled and possibly even dribbled at) on the public beach.

I am Australian so our thongs come in pairs and are known as "flip-flops" by you Brits (which begs the question "Where do you Brits get these names from?" I could sidetrack even more and ask who in their right mind would call bug spray pif-paf- a wee bit childish!!). Needless to say, as such, and since thongs are attire for the feet I do wear rubber ones quite often on the beach!! :P
Personally I think it is in bad taste to wear g-strings/thongs on beaches, going topless and pleeez don't get me started on men in speedos-there should be laws about these sort of eyesores that cause retina damage.

 If you want to go topless or do the g-string thing then save enough money to go to a resort where you can swim naked in your own little compound with your own big pool. This is nothing to do with third world or first world countries -I could list a few listed first world countries where this would be by no means fine nor tolerated and would get you into trouble with the police.

what i find interesting about this whole thing is how men relate to women who show some skin, or a lot of skin. i mean u see a beautiful girl in a mini. u get turned on, but than u judge her.
its the same with topless or strings. i read everywhere women u should not show too much skin, bla bla bla. and i agree in certain terms.
but showing or not showing skin is not the point. the point is, that those men who have their eyes out of the orbit from staring, do not stare because they r revolted and their sense of correctness and "purity" is being violated by what they see. they stare because the get turned on and imagine all kinds of "yakk, all so dirty, immoral" :P things and probably go on imagining them at night when their fulfill their duties as husbands....now everybody can imagine whatever feels good, but then why judge smthing that u took pleasure in seeing????

Ok - in reply to Choc's question I wouldn't call lying on your front with straps undone topless!
Anyway - I checked with the girlfiriend last night she confirmed that as the Mina there were indeed several topless girls and she was topless herself - only topless whilst sitting on their sunloungers though - people did cover up when they got up to hit the sea.
But the mina did seem like 100% tourists with no sign of locals - you could have been pretty much anywhere in the world

Third world??? Whatever...
And the EU is the beacon of development???!!!
Have you been to EU member Greece??!!! Or Poland... Or what about your next in line countries like Romania and Bulgaria... Yes, the light of civilization...
Or the US??? Yeah, South Central, Harlem, South Chicago, all of the Southern States, the very soul of FIRST WORLD DEVELOPMENT...
Get a clue dude!
EU might not be the bacon of developement, as not all the Arab countries have "smelled" the civilisation. What about Romania? what do u know about this country? it's not one of the EU economical powers country but for sure civilisation has nothing to do with skyscrapers! and it's a much better place to live in than a lot of countries.
alexandra
and btw Liban , if u say that greece has nothing to do with civilisation than u r way out of base, sorry to say that! greece had a great contribution to "civilisation" and it's all back to history....and one more thing: the word CIVILISATION has ethimologically speaking the roots in tha latin language which brings it all back to EUrope!

Go EUROPE!!!!
Liban
Today's Greece is nothing like the Greece of years gone by. Today's Greece is an example of an EU charity basket. The EU has spent and currently spends billions to prop up this third world country. I have nothing against Greece. Its just a fact. Greece is third world, unlike other EU members such as UK, France, Germany, Italy, etc....
Romania, I never mentionned that little country. But Romania is definatly not a fully developped country. It is less developed than Greece and that by far. Romania's problems are deep rooted in poverty, education (lack of), and discrimination. All these apply to the mainly Roma population that suffers under Romanian laws. Romania has some ways to go.
These are facts. I am not attacking any one country because I frankly do not care about Greece or Romania to the point of having an issue with them since they are not world players and do not provide for an even minor blip on the radar.

Liban u r so funny man....get ur eyes on a world map and chek romania, if it's a little country than lebanon is just an almost invisible dot on the map!
and what facts r u talking about???? u know nothing about romania, u talk only from what u heared! and if u the problem is education, tha lack of it , how u saied it, than tell me why most of the arabs sent their kids here to college? my city is the greatest universitary city in ROmania, the UMF college is one of the best in europe! UTC college has an impressive number of foreign students, mostly arabs!
and about poverty: as i stated before RO might not be the richest country in the world, but u wont see ppl using donkeys for sure: on the shit roads u can see poor ppl in ferarri, mercedes, bmw, rolls, maybach and so on........so yeah u r right they must be sooooooooo poooor to afford to buy cars of hundred thousands dollars.
regarding the laws: i dare to say i know more than u do about romanian laws, and i will say that we have good laws but the problem is that ppl don't know to use their rights!

from how i see u both r right and wrong regarding some aspects.
Liban surelly knows more about these countries, than so many ppl who can t tell the difference between bucharest and budapest. yet from what he said, his knowledge is superficial. but thats not the point.
yes, ur right Alex, one does not see donkeys carrying vegetable to the market, but would see crap horses do the same.
about education, yes, many r very much so undereducated, but they r mainly from the countryside. on the other hand, very few ppl know how many scientists, researchers, phisicians, etc. the world has from eastern europe. because here if u get in a good school and university, the amount of information u have to learn is brutal. and there is one more thing that comes handy for ppl from these countries. since the languages spoken here are not by far internationally used, specially younger generations if they want smthing from life, they start learning languages. not one, but 2 or 3. so generally speaking, the education around here is either very poor or very good.
and yes, the gypsy issue, is quite a big issue in all these countries.
now Liban, u were right, that comparing to western european countries, these ones are nowhere. still i have to say, that i few years ago they actually were a good example to follow, but not anymore, for the simple fact, that their economy stagnates. and all economical prognostication show that it will get worse.
on the other hand, eastern countries r getting themselves together after the communistic refuse left here, that kept them from moving further so far. also true, that they would not be able to develope without western money and help.
now about that donkey again, live it alone girl :P , im trying to get a vote of confidence to become the head of donkey community inquisition. so don t mess with my plans.

I am happy you are patriotic Alexandra but Romania has a LONNNG way to go and no matter what you say that is indisputable.
arniegang
Liban is not far off being totally correct in his assessment Alex.
rather than enter into debate regarding the economy, i would just like to post some hard facts published by the IMF that assessed the Romanian economy post your diversion from communisim in 1989 and again in 2003.
The agricultural economy and its employment outweighs its industial economy by 75%. However its GDP of Industry is 300% over agriculture.
This state of economy confirms the inbalance and shows the vast majority of the population are employed in argriculture and the income is minimal in compassison to its much smaller but profitable Industrial Economy.
Its current public debt is 25.3% of its GDP. Basically Alex romania is "broke".
The last figures to show true inflation levels was in 2004 running at 15.3% !!!!!!
i will paste the overall conclusion by the IMF
"The IMF Board approved Romania's completion of the standby agreement in October 2003, the first time Romania has successfully concluded an IMF agreement since the 1989 revolution. Nonetheless, recent macroeconomic gains have done little to address Romania's widespread poverty, while corruption and red tape hinder foreign investment.
Like Liban states we admire your patriotism Alex. But sadly it has to be accepted that Romania is on the verge of being considered " a third world country". The actuallity of your post is far off the reality.
G
15.3% inflation!!! That's almost as high as Dubai!!!
arniegang
It was the last "true" inflation level audited by the IMF G - the word on the street is the reality is now closr to 35-40% possibly higher. The problem is getting through the corruption and official records/accounts/documents being altered, faked and forging within the government itself and has links to the large Crime Syndicates.

arnie dear , the economical situation of romania was not what i argued with Liban...he was saing about the lack of culture in this "small country".
now as i saied previousely and u can read it again in my posT: i agree that RO is not doing well when it comes to economy sot that was not the issue here.
as for the patriotism honestely i don't need anyone's admiration cause i am not one , i don't think that Romania is the best place , and i am aware of the shit things in here, more than u and Liban and anyone else for that matter. i live here so each day i face the bad things...but that does not mean that i will stand silent when someone is pointing out ROmanian as a country where education does not exist! the economy, the corruption, the discrimination( i have read the post about the clubs in dubai as ex) r problems that more developed countries face, not only us...in the third world
arniegang
I repect your reply Alex, but these figure do indeed have an impact on the countries culture. In terms of % about the amount of people working in Argriculture, this shows the very small % of those working within Industry.
This in turn reflects on the amount of quality education within the % of the population. I would not wish to say Rom does not have its Uni's and is not an "educated" country. But is it clear from the figures that we are indeed talking about a minority.
I would also wish to disagree on your assessment of comparing Rom education where you drew comparrisons to the rest of Western Europe. You further reinforce this comment by stating that many Arabs use the countries facilities for education.
Alex in all reallity it probably comes down to cost, and availability and lack of choice for those Arabs countries in being able to offer their kids an education but at the cheaper end of the higher education fee's. I would put it to you it has nothing to do with the excellent educational facilities you would wish us to think. As far as Bach and Master Degree's go on the quality scale, Rom is near the bottom of the list in Europe.

i do respect ur views and anyone else's point of view arnie, but do not agree with u when u say that the educated ones r minority...the problem is that many young ppl after graduation do not find jobs...so they decide to go abroad: i know doctors working in the emirate's hospitals, engeneers and so on...the fact is that more and more students get more that one university degree and Master etc but it is hard to get a good job!
ohhh and yes, my dentist is from lebanon, and he decided to reside in our third world country and there r many more ( this goes out to LIban)
and yes i agree with u arnie, the costs of education is much lower that UK or any other country from W EU so they r free to go and study in Somalia or Burkina Faso!
so to end up with this more or less intelectual debate in a nice manner, u or Liban or anyone r welcome anytime in this SMALL country in the third world and i am sure u will find some fascinateing stuff: i will be more than happy to show u arround! oh and Liban...u can bring ur donkey with u!

Alex,
I think your English is pretty good, and whilst it is not perfect, I can honestly say that I have heard, read and seen much worse from people who have been born and raised in England and have lived her their whole lives.
I'm sure Arnie will agree (though he may not) that the standard of English is dropping in England (for a variety of reasons, not least the internet and SMS messaging). I have to say that sometimes I am quite embarrased at how well some foreigners (and by that I mean people for whom English isn't their first language and it isn't widely spoken in their country) can talk and write in English! I have some friends overseas who I can understand much easier than some of my friends that live in my town!!

I totally agree with Zooter with regard to the use of our language, standards are dropping with the "new age generation" with the advent of SMS and WWW.
I myself fall foul to it from time to time, we all do.
I suppose if it were reveresed and i was trying to speak romanian to you, i am sure you would get to a point where if i kept saying something to you or refered to you in a manner that you yourself, would consider rude or really got up your nose, then i would wish to know, and you would probably say or correct.
Again like Zoooter, i am gobsmacked at the way a lot you you guy's and girls are multi-lingual. It is something the British people dont do very well i am sad to say.
Please dont take a correction to much to heart. Think of it in way that will enhance the way we speak to each other.

Well said!
I wonder why us Brits are, on the whole, so much worse at learning second languages than other countries?? It surely can't just be the standard of teaching, can it??
i would say because u have the advantage that English is the most used international language in many fields, so why to have some hard times to learn arabic(i would love to be able to speak it) only cause u will visit dubai if all the hotel saff will speak ur native language  it's much easier for u guys

Alex
This is the reason why in general a lot of us Brits are totally embarassed when it comes to the subject of languages.
I can only speak for myself, but to be served at a table by someone who can speak 3 languages leaves me ashamed.
Its a Brit thing really, and like you correctly pointed out most people learn English to talk to us. People like myself would love to be able to speak a foreign language, but its not really high on the priority of our educational system to encourage languages. It never has been and never will be i am sad to say.
GoodBai
I'm afraid I'm that typical Brit. Did French and Spanish at school and then just let it drift until having to say "Dos cervezas por favor!"
arniegang
Sooo true GB and my only sentence in French (excuse spelling) is
Voulez vous couche avec moi sus soi
But it does come in handy

and it's pretty logical as far as i can see, what sense it will make to learn all the world languages(unless u have a hobby for that) when the rest of the world is learning english to be able to comunicate internationally!
for me english was a hobby! so learning the other languages i speak and it was a real help in some situations and i am sure it will be helpfull in the future also.

I agree 110% with you Arnie. It is embarrasing when you go abroad to France or Spain. The waiters try so hard, and I can barely string two or 3 words together. It embarrases me when I visit my cousin in Dubai and her husband is German and speaks better English than me!! Even corrects my grammar!!

There is a strange sort of satisfaction at being able to sit on the sidelines and hold everyones coat! Silly boys!
I will not lower myself to enter the fray and put all of you in the shade and will gracefully pretend to be that blind man...at least I get to feel my way as well! 8)
