This is driving me batty and I bet one of you IT specialists out there know the answer. How can I set up my local internet connection to retrieve emails from my btinternet account onto my desktop - rather than using the web page.
My other email addresses are all fine it just the darned btinternet one which doesn't want to know and DIC say they can only help with local email account set-up...

most ISPs will only let you send mail via SMTP if your directly connected to there network.
There is an easy solution however. Just use the local DIC account for sending mail, but setup the reply-to address in your mail client as your btinternet email address
Done :)

thanks - that's the basic rule which normally works but not with the wonderful btinternet who never like their customers to have an easy ride
I'd love to hear from anyone out there who has gone thru the same frustration and found a solution - other than trashing the bt address :!:

That should work fine. When sending via DIC SMTP it will have nothing to do with BT Internet. You can put the reply-to address as anything thing you want. It just means that when someone replies to your mail it will be delivered to your btinternet mail box
In your mail client: use the BTinternet settings for POP3 (incoming)
and DIC settings for SMTP (outgoing) with the reply-to address as your btinternet address.
I would be very surprised if that does not work

I was very surprised too! DIC say that because their server requires authentication both POP and SMTP have to be set to the alternative email server settings !!! It's really really weird, never had this problem anywhere else......... it's driving me mad :x

I don't know about btinternet but maybe this would work. As long as you have direct Internet connection (not sure if you have proxy/firewall):
POP from btinternet (if supports).
SMTP through your
local SMTP server (example with ).
Most of the case it should work, so you can bypass POP/SMTP authentication from your ISP.

Thanks - if only life were so easy! DIC is a secure network requiring authentication, therefore it's necessary to put btinternet as SMTP - this works with all my other email addresses but not with btinternet!
Anyone else got any ideas :?:
