"Dubai: A British athlete has become the first person to swim around Palm Jumeirah.
Jamie Atherton, 32, a key account manager with AME Info, completed the charity challenge in five hours and 29 minutes in memory of his friend John Ratcliffe, who died from bowel cancer earlier this year.
Jamie's efforts have already raised over £4,000 (Dh24,540) for Bowel Cancer UK but he is hoping more people will donate so he can reach his target of £10,000.

actually i've been thinking for years on why there's no intercultural carnival in dubai? i thought this place is a melting pot of multi nations?

actually this place is ANTI-melting pot. A melting pot is when different nationalities come together and embrace the culture of their new land (the melting pot). The U.S. is like that. Second generation immigrants all become Americanized. They often speak close to perfect "American", have similar lifestyles, live the American dream, etc. Even if they don't reach that point, the next generation will. How many expats here speak proper Arabic and is there a Dubai dream that I am unaware of? Here people seem to live endlessly temporary lives. Even when they bring their families here, it seems like the whole family is living a bachelor's life. You can't have a melting pot if you don't feel like this is your home and this can't be your home unless you feel safe. Have fun feeling safe here on employment visas with sponsors and no permanent ownership of your home.

this place cannot become a melting pot, unless the UAE would allow its country to become the place of the melting, but the indian/pakistani majority to be the pot.
locals are so very few, and arabic is not the business language. I just don't see how they could make in any number of generations expats melt into their culture. I think its a lot more likely that soon the clothes will be local, but the faces not. it already started.

@ raidah...interesting analogy. A little more clarity would be great. Anyways Yes, if they aldready have not realised it, the sucess of the economy here will depend a lot on the subcontinent their people and trade with them.
Adressing ur second point I often wonder on what parameters do sociologists here address issues of identity, culture and society. But I doubt the level of deterioration is such as you have stated?
