uaekid Update: It has been revealed the UK's citizens face at least a decade of pain to pay off the debts from the banking bailout, according to a treasury minister. Lord Myners spoke candidly about how bad the situation is. And it contradicts what the prime minister Gordon Brown has said, when he called the banking bailout a temporary measure.
More disturbingly, Mervyn King, the head of the Bank of England, has spoken of the need for rule-breaking solutions to cope with the scale of economic damage done by the ten-year debt bubble.
The scale of damage to UK banking has some believing by year's end, the UK will only have two UK-quoted bank shares: HSBC and Standard Chartered. An article in the country's Independent newspaper has reported that all the country's banks are now insolvent:
What is unknown at this point is how much Britain's young workers are willing to pay the price for this bailout, facing the prospect of earning a very weak pound, huge taxes and low salaries and benefits, until the overhang of debt is worked off.
The UK government announced a 'blank cheque' bailout of the country's banks yesterday, after its £37 billion bailout in October 2008 had failed to make the banks solvent and start lending again.
The currency then dropped to its lowest point in five years against the US dollar (it has hit a seven year low in trading today). A credit rating agency is considering downgrading the UK because its debts are soaring so quickly. If this happens, it will mean the government will struggle to pay interest payments and convince global markets to buy UK debt.
Jim Rogers, the co-founder of Quantum fund with George Soros, today told Bloomberg News that “I would urge you to sell any sterling you might have. It's finished. I hate to say it, but I would not put any money in the UK.”
The UK's citizens are currently the most indebted per person in human history, even outstripping Americans. The size of the debts are so large, the government is considering printing money to help hyperinflate away the country's debts, using something called 'quantitative easing'. The Bank of England was given permission yesterday to do this.

So many countries worldwide are trying to defend their currency and financial systems it's not funny. The UK is not alone, but as has been said here already at least the press are allowed to report freely there, and they do love a sensationalist approach.
Now, what's all this about the British Empire then? You obviously all have no idea that it actually had to be given back to the natives of the countries because Britain totally BANKRUPTED herself standing alone against Hitler after he overran the rest of Europe. USA didn't even want to know until we had borrowed billions from them to finance the Island's resistance, then they stepped in. After that they practically owned the UK, the last of the war debt wasn't paid back until the 1990's! We paid for the world's freedom with our Empire, how amazing is that. That is, us, the Aussies and Kiwis, the Indians (in big numbers), the Burmese, etc., all troops from British Dominions.
Britain's Empire actually was costing huge sums to run in the 20th century, it wasn't a money making deal, it was more about world stability and, OK, I guess national pride, it was after all the largest Empire in the history of the world, you dont give it up lightly. After taking war funding from the US in the 1940's it was never again going to be viable for Britain to keep her dominions. Britain was financially if not emotionally glad to be rid of India, for example, because it was a huge drain on our coffers. The UK and India have a great relationship today, based on previous centuries of fatherly guidance and rule by the UK. Compare that to the ex-colonies of the Italians and the Belgians for example, who hated their rulers.
So, uaeflid (apologies to the truly disabled, I would, never use that term for them) and your barmy army, if we had let Hitler and his buddies run the world, your parents would have been born under the jackboot of the Japanese. Nice eh? They really know about human rights.

Its time for all world leaders to stop relying on expanding Keynesian monetary principles. Lets start with a fixed money expansion of 2 percent a year and a good decade of deflation, to get that pound back up again.
Unfortunately, the debts are so high that monetary deflation cannot be tolerated or accepted at this time, as it will increase the nominal value of the pound, while at the same time the pounds face value remains the same...in essence; the loans you have, become more expensive.

My father was on BRITISH NAVY DESTROYERS throughout the whole 39-45 war, and was torpedoed and sunk and survived twice escorting convoys relieving places like Malta and the convoys around the north or Norway.

The BEF (British Expeditionary Force) were the only thing standing in front of the German advance through Europe and if not for the thousands who died or were captured and sent to POW camps, the German advance would have been 10 times faster.
A large number were evacuated at Dunkirk, but we lost pretty much all our hardware and weapons as it had to be abandoned. If Operation Sealion (the planned invasion of England from Calais) had gone ahead, it is likely that we would have had a very hard time holding them back.
It was due to the inability of the Luftwaffe to gain absolute air superiority in the summer of 1943 due to the efforts of the RAF, which consisted of pilots from over 25 different nationalities including Poles, Czechs, Russians and even a Sikh, that Hitler abandoned Operation Sealion and concentrated his attention on the Russian front.
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour was dire yet fortuitous as it meant the US had a legitimate reason to enter the European theatre.
Interestingly, in the 1970's a computer simulation wargame was played that used the exact parameters found at the time in the UK and Europe. The Luftwaffe were actually guided by Adolf Galland, who was a commander in the war and it proved that the operation would have had a measure of success but that they would never have progressed with the invasion past the Thames. The supply chain became too stretched and fragile and the advance troops could never be supplied in sufficient quantity.

xl Speedhump Britain did hand over power to national parties peacefully. the nationalist movements had existed for long beforehand in India and Egypt (the two main countries you are considering concerning the UK I imagine). The main reason for getting out was the financial burden which Empire imposed, and which as you say was no longer affordable after WWII. You should not believe that, say in India, after over three hundred years of overseas rule a nationalist party suddenly became victorious through it's own merits, and it did not even represent the whole nation. Ghandi was a powerful force I agree, his main strength was in in the way he treated with the UK. He was a true statesman, but the fact that the serious talks on India's independance came immediately after WWII should tell you that British financial constraints and not his movement was the driving force. As always in this world 'money talks'. Egypt was different, during the inter-war free operation of the Suez Canal was seen as immensely important to the ability of the West to keep world order (sounds highhanded, and it was), and Britain was very loath to relinquish control to Egypt where the operation of democratic government looked very unlikely to succeeed a British withdrawal. Even after handover in the twenties Britain maintained an immense amount of political clout until the 1950's. Any violent nationalist parties were always put down by the introduction of martial law. It was no different in Egypt, except really the will (and money) to maintain Empire was gone. handover was inevitable. Speedhump postscript: Britain was a disillusioned nation after the second war, the free world had triumphed but the UK was absolutely bankrupt, and this for a nation that never gave up her independence!
