The Bastakia neighbourhood is one of the worth visiting historical spot in Dubai. Infact its the only proper neighbourhood in Dubai that is of 110 years old.
It includes over 50 houses all around each other with narrow "koocheh" (its a Persian word, it means like a very small & narrow street between houses).
The owners of the Bastakia are originally Persians. Their hometown is Bastak, a small town in Persia between Fars and Hormoz regions.
Before 150 years .. many Bastaki people started to move towards Dubai and Bahrein to start some business. And those who setteled in Dubai built their own neighbourhood which is now an opened musem for tourists. And Bastaki people are one of the very smart group of people in Dubai and great merchants who were the very first to establish a business base on this land. The first hotels, Al Shandagha tunnel, and also the first proper souk were all established by the Bastakis.
The Bastakis are unlike the Arab nomads of The Emirates, they were actually civilized, and well educated. They used to travel to India and study langauge, literature, and mathematics. Then they come back to Dubai and start som business. And they are not Arabs. The Bastakis are now local people of Dubai, and its not necessary for a person to be an Arab so that he'd be considered as a local. Bastakis are Persians yet they are appeared on this land before many other Arabs. They also have played the most important role in the development of Dubai.
& by the way ..
I am Bastaki
Here are some photos of The Bastakia neighbourhood, where my grandfather and our other Bastaki fellows have lived in old Dubai
Note: The archit. style of the houses and the wind towers on each house is
not Arabic .. its pure Persian. The wind towers are like the air conditions now days, its built in a way that it gathers all the air and push it down towards the house to give some fresh air.
...
