I expect to cop a bit of grief for this but what the hell. I applied for a Dubai job with a slightly 'beefed' up CV. My references got checked and then I received an offer of employment. When I go through the work permit process, will I have to provide my Social Security Number which may reveal the embellished truth?

S & O, he/she likely he added some work history that is completely false.
I have no clue who or if anyone can access someone's work history by checking their social security number abroad. I suspect not. If you are working in finance etc. I know that many companies do a very thorough security check - so yes - you will likely be caught in that case, even if they can't access your social security info.

I knew what he meant, but I wanted to know what he had done to beef it up.

Beefed up meaning...in 2003 worked for employer A, quit at end of year and worked for Employer B for 2004 & 2005, went back to Employer A for 2006. On CV, stated that I worked for Employer A 2003-2006. All within the same industry, just thought it would look more appealing to my prospective Dubai employer. This job is not in the finance industry but construction. I am fully aware that this was a foolish decision on my part, just hope someone can shed some light on this subject ie: personal experience. Thanks.

Well, it is good to hear that you actually had the work experience and didn't make something up! I wouldn't call this "beefing"up your CV, it is in fact omitting information. Yes, I think it was foolish because you already worked one year with company A, which is a respectable amount of time. It is people who jump every 3 - 6 months to new jobs here and there that have to worry about how their CV looks. I really don't think you needed to worry about working for company B for 2 years (which might have actually added value to your CV) before switching back to company A. You may not get caught, but if you do, just be honest about the mistake and hope they have mercy on you.

In respect to the actual work permit paperwork, does one have to provide work history (ie:social security number) from abroad or is it only info regarding the new job/employer? Haven't actually accepted the offer yet but if this is bound to bite me in the arse I would rather deny the offer and save the embarassment for everyone involved.
Sorry to bother you with my problem but I know you are the ones who may be able to provide the answers.

Well, I don't know for sure. In Canada they ask for your Social Insurance number when you are hired, but it isn't like the States where I heard that they keep all kinds of data on you through your Social Security Number. Are you from the US or somewhere else? Also, even if a US employer could access info on your work history through checking your SS number, it may not be possible for other companies to do it outside the US. In two other countries where I have worked I was never asked for my Canadian Social Insurance number, so I am confused as to why you are being asked for yours when you are being hired from outside the country. Perhaps you can clarify some details.

As K said, what you described is not really beefing it up.
No, they do not require SS number.
You will have to bring your degree with final marks, which will be checked when they apply for your work permit.
Your work history is only required by your prospective Employer to assess you mainly at interview stage.
