Your question isnt very clear.. albeit.. if u are looking at different rdbms systems. there are lots
Microsoft SQL Server or mySQL would be my pick MS SQL also has a free dbms SQL Express which has a db limitation of 4GB.

Yeah, are you after Solutions Providers or just the RDBMS?
try MySQL or if you want transaction rollback and locking capabilities, PostgreSQL.

Hmm I thought mySql has transaction roll back and table locking capabilities as well..
If U've to do a row locking or say record level locking, it has to be tweaked..
and i think the major difference is in the programming part.. with some limitations with views, some queries (if u are used to t-sql) and triggers and some datamining capabilities..

It does since 4.1 but I have not heard anything good about them.
Remember it's primarily geared towards LAMP setups where transactions are not really needed.

Agreed abt the LAMP thing.. but even a forum can have transaction issues...

How many rollbacks are you going to be doing on a forum?

One i can say just out of no where.. a user starts posting on a thread and for some reason while posting the connection is lost or an error has occured.. a sure case for rollback

Surely a forum wouldn't be classed as mission critical enough to even bother?

^^ haha not a mission critical operation.. but sure enough case for a transaction rollback to occur... and if u take keeping the posts accurate as a mission and follow acid properties, yes it is mission critical..
