Another long weekend coming up?

Dubaidude007 I hear the next thursday is a holiday being the Islamic New Year and all. Man, getting a bit tired of all these holidays, am I the only one who feels this way?

Today's date is; Dhu l-Hijja 26, 1428, this means the New Year starts on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the sighting of the New Moon. Dubaidude007
I should have known that (hangs head in shame) reviewer
I don't remember the 1st of Muharram being a holiday.... Joana

scarlet Is the 10th going to be a dry day - or will it be the 9th? sage & onion Just announced that coming Thursday is a Holiday for the Public Sector, Private Sector announcement soon!!!!!! This however means that the month Dhu l-Hijja is a 31 day month and this is not possible I believe. Any comments? Dubaidude007
Maybe MO' reworked the Islamic Calendar? XPClone
There have been many mis calculations in the last year so the calendar dates are very mixed up at the moment. Not sure what will be done to correct this. You are correct - 31 day month should not be possible? Dubai Knight We get an extra day in February too, being a Leap Year. How does that work out in the Islamic calendar? :? :? :? Knight shafique
No need for leap years in the Islamic calendar as the years (actually the months) aren't fixed.
Lunar months can vary from place to place as it depends on the crescent of the moon (hilal) being visible - so whilst the moon becomes visible at a particular time (roughly 20 hours after it is astronomically 'born' - i.e. some sliver of the moon moves out of the earth's shadow) - it will be visible to some parts of the world, but others the moon will be out of sight or it will already be day there.
That said, the difference is a maximum of one day.
And the guys above are right - it is technically impossible to have a 31 day lunar cycle and hence a 31 day lunar month.
The lunar calendar is used for religious festivals - as it rotates around the seasons, but for things like agriculture the solar calendar is used - i.e. determines when winter, summer etc are.
Cheers,
