A Smoke Free Dubai?

giggsy Question for you here. With Dubai being so cutting edge and on the front of so many things, when will they catch up with a lot of the modern world and go smoke free in public places. I wouldn't even want to bring my children to the mall for fear of exposing them to second hand smoke. I know they've got the designated areas that you can hold your breath and speed walk through but people just smoke where ever they like. Just curious if there have been any real efforts to clean up the breathing spaces?
sage & onion Dubai Municipality tried to Ban smoking in Public spaces on October 15, 2004 this ban was lifted within a couple of days. They say that it will be imposed again this year, let's hope so; gtmash You should see my local "American" college. 80% of people smoke, including girls and professors. Tropic23 I hate the smoke!!!!! :( ISH
damn yo were is that
DON
ISH gtmash
There are two "American University" of whatevers here. I'm in one of them. I think the other one's the same. scot1870 Coming from Scotland it's the only thing I miss - smoke free bars. What gets you here is that people don't smoke in restaurants as such, more have conversations whilst wafting a lit cigarette in everyone else's face and having about 2 puffs of it. Roll on a smoke ban, it's for the good of everyone. ^ian^
Speak for yourself.
Ban non-smokers. Most irritating bunch of tards around. sauron
+1 And ex-smokers are the worst of the lot. :x Jeevan
seems ur a heavy smoker :) i just realised what smoking has done to me couldnt run 500 mts at a stretch and at one time i used to play 50 overs cricket games. i have been forced to cut down and its getting better can run for 3 kms without a break now. I dont say i have quit but have reduced wont be able to give it up completely i guess :S .

I wanna stop, but sanctimonious reformed smokers irritate me. Grrrrrrrrr.........gimme another fag. bear
Agreed... I'm all for keeping people who don't want to smoke away from people who want to smoke. But isn't It enough to have a smoking and non-smoking section?
If you don't want to smoke, stay in the non-smoking section. Why should a smoker's freedom be impeded? I, as a smoker, do refrain from smoking while walking around a mall. Why should I have to exit the mall in what could be 48 degree heat, if all i want to do is sit at a coffee shop, sip a cup and smoke a couple of butts?
I know this is not my most eloquent of posts, but my brain hasn't roused yet. you'll have to forgive me. sage & onion BORN AGAIN NON SMOKER - And proud of it  bear Glad to hear it Sage, good on ya. Sorry for being aggressive in my previous post people. I understand that non-smokers enjoy not smoking and not being around smoke. But I think they fail to understand that smokers smoke because they enjoy it. I'm not one for making it hard for someone to enjoy the little time on this planet by robbing them of their right to. It's a choice people have to make themselves, either non-smokers go out where you know people may be smoking, or you stay in environments you know are controlled or that you can control. Smokers make the same choice, either they will go somewhere they know they are not allowed to smoke and obey the rules, or they go somewhere they know they are free to smoke. Tropic23 To smoke is just stupid :!: It is expensive.......you blow your money in the air....how smart is that?! It stinks......your clothes, your hair, later your skin, your fingers,.... Very sexy.... :brushteeth:.....to kiss an ashtray.... And last but not least: IT IS UNHEALTHY!!!! Do you know that you give your body 3000 toxins with one fag??? Every fag means: My life minus 20 minutes. And the worst fact is that non smokers like me die more often then smokers because of the smoke. That`s not fair. Wake up druggies!!!!! Smokers are loser.... Sorry, when my posting is so harsh, but I saw so many smokers dying already in my life. It makes me sick.... bear
We know, we don't care. It's also very unhealthy to drive a car, go out in the sun or live in a city. Are you going to move to an island? No you won't, because you like the rest of us are Internet addicts.

True, which is why I am not opposed to the segregation. All I'm saying is there should be public places where smokers can go to be social and still do what they enjoy. Tropic23 I think in Dubai are enough places for smokers..... Segregation?! Well, do you mean cafes for example with few tables for smokers and few for non-smokers? I don`t understand this logic, because the air is still full of smoke. It`s unimportant if you sit at a non smoker table, when 3 tables further is a smoker table. Don`t think that the posting is against you. It`s your life....your health.... I`m just upset, because of the whole smoke story. bear I understand your position, and I am not taking your opinion personally at all. :D And believe it or not. I agree, the smokers should be farther away from the non smokers. Thats why my most frequent hang out is non smoking downstairs, and smoking upstairs. I don't agree with your stance on pollution though... the amount of pollution caused by cigarettes pales in comparison the the pollution caused cars, or industrial revolution or even the flatulence of cows. ^ian^ I maintain my stance... smokers are better people. I'm yet to be proven wrong.
gtmash
The worst part is making non-smokers smell the stink and join in the cancer count.
People drive a car, but it is illegal to kill someone with one. gtmash
Try a gay bar. sauron
So that's where you hang out. THE COVENANT All the smoking preachers in here , you know its bad and better stop bragging about u smoking and caring two hoots about it, its a very weak attempt of boosting ur sagging self confidence , so if ur not already grown up, grow up and quit before u kill urself and others. easternjewel
the covenant, dumb movie..
how do smokers kill themselves & others? I know I m a responsible smoker haha I smoke in the open with other smokers. ^ian^
I thought a wonder-bra was supposed to cure sagging self confidence? THE COVENANT
Yea i know only a dumb one like u can give such a dumb answer, whatelse can be expected from you THE COVENANT
yea ask those who have used it even i heard the same  easternjewel
I am not offended, try again.
I don't see why people like you are against smokers... about that whole passive smoking thing, you can just leave poor smokers alone you know... sage & onion
This is true as long as the poor non smokers are left alone EJ, unfortunately some of the places you go to here, take Longs Bar, it is impossible to stay in that place if you are a non-smoker. THE COVENANT
If you smoke smoke in your own confined space, why do you want others to face the brunt of smoking. burn your lungs, dont trouble others. and i am not saying this coz i dont smoke, its just that what you are trying to defend is utterly wrong easternjewel Hie sage, nah your too sweet for any arguement, okay if u say so  the covenant, I stated I m a responsible smoker. (or so i think) I avoid smoking indoors in restaurent etc. However, its not our problem if most of the places are smoking zones & minority of you sulk over it. THE COVENANT
You might be one, agreed, but again whats there to brag about? and no ones sulking, i guess you people get concious about it when someone strikes a argument, nonsmokers are not at the loosing end, but in long term you are, thats what you need to realize easternjewel haha I wasnt bragging.. I think all smokers should adapt that attitude, specially because kids are around.. cmon don't be mad now, take a smoke my friend THE COVENANT
Nah i dont smoke :) thanks anyways:) St.Lucifer I smoke.. but i dont when little ones are there in the area.. n I take my care in ensuring who ever is with me.. is comfortable.. well atleast that they r not pissed of it .. :D THE COVENANT
cool enough if u respect what others feel rather than just smoking on their faces and making them walk off with a disgusted look on thier faces. thats a cool thing you do :) sage & onion
Hi EJ, how yah doing? giggsy I started the post so I guess I'm entitled to my 2 cents. I've got 2 scenerios for you.
1. Smoking sections - first, the smoke in the smoking section doesn't magically stay in that section. Smoke drifts and infects the entire facility. Granted the further away from the smoking section the less it's in your face. However, it is still being breathed no matter how far away you are because smoke travels. But what always cracks me up is how the smoking section butts up against the non-smoking. So someone sitting literally 2 feet away is smoking and ruining your meal. Here in Canada they tried to introduce smoking rooms. So now no smoke interferes witht he non-smokers. Great idea right? Not neccessarily. What about the people who have to work in those areas and serve the smokers? It's not like they can say no. If they do chances are they're fired so? A true story, a colleague of mine, her mother was a career waitress, never smoked, died of lung cancer from second hand smoke. Is it your right as a smoker to subject the general public with smoke?
2. I want to take my pregnant wife and 2 year old out to a restaurant or a mall. So now they have to inhale smoke and damage their lungs? Bull shite!
In the end, if a smoker has to pick up and go outside to smoke I think that's far less of an inconveniece than a non-smoker having to endure second hand smoke. I don't think anyone on this forum is daft enough to try and argue the health benefits of smoking. I think we all know what it does to people. So, knowing that, how can any one smoker say they are being more inconvenienced than a non-smoker. It's absolutely your choice to kill yourself slowly as a smoker. It's my choice not to be killed by smoking and no one should have to be subjected to that. In the end is it that big of a deal for you to get up and go outside for 5 minutes? It's worked all over the world. Check out . It might enlighten. sage & onion Very good reasoning giggsy. I went to Dublin with my family last year, and it was the first time that we had ever encountered the Smoke free policy, especially the restaurants it was fantastic. ^ian^
Why did you come back? ^ian^
Ever heard of extractor fans?

Why is it always the Canadians? (Sorry Fayz)

Whilst I don't think smoking is super good for you, there is a lot of hyperbole about the effects of cigarette smoking. Car exhaust which is much more plentiful is many many times more dangerous for you.

I agree, but you have no problem getting into your oversized gas guzzling SUV and burning off down the highway belching out pollution.

Having been a non-smoker, an ex-smoker and a current smoker... I can honestly say, if someone more than 2 metres away having a ciggie is bothering you... it's not the cigarette... it's you. THE COVENANT Dr. D continues with his rant sauron
And you continue to tarnish the image of non-smokers. THE COVENANT
Excuse me??? i am a non smoker myself and i dont hate smokers i hate their illogical and lame attempt to portray their need for freedom ^ian^
Where has anyone stated a need for 'freedom'? THE COVENANT your talks go in that direction though the word hast been used there is an underlying current which heads in that direction :) ^ian^
I really thought The Covenant movie sucked arse... and I can that's an underlying theme moving in the 'incoherent?' direction. Jeevan
  THE COVENANT
I guess what everyone talks about you is right :) when you cant carry on with a debate and have your back against the wall you start abusing and try to divert the topic. rather than doing this try and polish your debating skills  THE COVENANT
You find it funny ha  so do i ^ian^
I think it's just pointless carrying on this topic over and over.
Every now and then some preachy people come in here and tell us all off for smoking and mention how it's bad etc. and how we're killing ourselves... all the people in the world... rabbits etc. - all really horrible stuff.
And I hereby award you hypocrite of the month:

WTFG. giggsy I guess I was wrong. Apparently all the stats on the harms of smoking are just "hyperbole." I feel so much better now. Thanks for setting me straight. Or...you're insane. I suggest doing some research into the effects. Now, I do not drive an SUV. I have never driven an SUV nor will I ever drive an SUV. I drive a Honda Civic, much more efficient. Still, not a Hybrid but I can sleep at night. I also am not a big environmentalist pushing my opinions on others. If you want to smoke, knock yourself out. Whatever you want to do to you, hey knock yourself out. I have no issues with you doing whatever it is you do so long as it doesn't interfere with whatever I do. As far as the car pollution, yeah, serious problem. However, you're talking oranges and apples here. I guess if I invited you over to my house, put you in a locked up garage and turned my car on you'd have more of a point. But I'm not forcing anyone to suck on my tail pipe. Because that's essentially what you're doing as a smoker. You are forcing all those around you to breathe your second hand smoke. Key word, force. Again, if you want to lock yourself in your home or car and smoke until you're content go for it. Have a fantastic time. I just don't want to be a part of it. You cannot argue the adverse affects and the statistics. You can choose to ignore them but they're still there. I developed respritory issues when I was 8 because I lived in a house with chain smokers so don't sit there and tell me the issue is with me the non-smoker. I love having to take 2 inhalers and a little pill twice a day so I can get through the day without having an asthma attack. Yeah, the problem is the non-smoker, you're bang on. And as for the ventillation, it helps but it does not eliminate. I work in the appliance industry so I know all about ventilation and CFM's, probably more so that you so you can take that idea back down under. And for the record, it wasn't just Canadians pushing the topic. I seem to remember a Scot and an Irish person talking about how much better it is now that it's smoke free in their native lands. Oh and Ian....smoke travels more than 2 metres. Do you honestly believe that you have a 2 metre force field around you? To summarize, smoke 'em if you got 'em just have the decency not to do so around those who don't. You can choose to smoke, but when you do I have no choice. When you smoke I have to right along with you. And if you go back to the original post it wasn't about telling smokers to quit, it was an inquiry into if Dubai would ever go smoke free in public places. ^ian^
It happens. Get over it. giggsy It happens more often than I'd like to admit! sage & onion
To annoy you of course
