This is to inform all who may not know the law here in UAE.
Many people like to go to the Hole in the Wall - Ajman or the Baracuda Hotel UAQ from Dubai, to purchase Alcoholic products for personal consumption, thinking that it is OK to do so.
In so doing you have to transport the Alcohol back to Dubai, you must pass through Sharjah. If you have an accident or are pulled over by the Police and the Alcohol is discovered you will be arrested, charged, convicted and deported, Sharjah has ZERO TOLERANCE for this offense.

...true of course, but only for people without a liquor licence.
If you are non-muslim and own a liqour licence it is ok to transport booze in your car within/through Sharjah and even to consume beer/booze at your home in Sharjah.
It is even possible to get a liquour licence in Sharjah as a Sharjah resident.
It is an urban legend that there are no liquour licences in SHJ.

You are partially correct, you do however have to have a receipt from a legally registered liquor store like A & E, clearly indicating that that you have paid the Federal Tax of 30%, this is definately not available from Ajman or UAQ.
And yes you can get a liquor license from the Sharjah Police.

As a muslim your options are:
1) Have a non-muslim friend who has a license buy for you
2) buy it from the airport duty free on your left after you are done with passport control however you will be limited to 4 cases of beer or 4 ltrs of spirits.
3) Go to Ajman/UAQ liquor stores however you will face the risks in the OP including lashing since you are a Muslim and Sharia law applies to you.
3) be a good muslim and dont drink :P

If you do not have a liquour licence, be very careful. A colleague of mine was caught out just before Ramadan and I am sure this scam will resurface.
On the way back from Ajman, he pulls in to get petrol then drives off. Just a few minutes from petrol station, a guy cuts him off and says that he ( my colleague ) hit his car at the petrol station. He then goes on to say that he knows he has booze in the car and that he will call the police unless he is paid.
My colleague told him to get stuffed and drove off but this guy followed him from Ajman to Satwa. Eventually they stopped at traffic lights, my friend's wife drove off with 'the evidence' while he delayed the guy at the lights. Without the evidence, the guy could do nothing.
This is not the first case I have heard of. So what to do? I guess get a licence or make sure you go to 'the hole in the wall' with someone who has one.
Keep checkin' your rear view mirror....................

Going to the hole in the wall with a license is not the answer, the problem with those liquor stores is that they do not charge the Federal Tax on Liquor, so if you are pulled over by the Police, you are in trouble license or not.

You know, it isn't as bad as it was made out to be. I went to Ajman to buy alcohol the other day and brought it to Sharjah and I couldn't imagine anyone stopping me.
Among the customers was an elderly in a national dress and white beard. This was in day light!!
You know what's better? I found a taxi parked right in front of the entrance and he offered to deliver the stuff to my home for 40 dirhams. So if you're so scared, you could talk to the taxi driver and he'll take the risk for you (if there is any risk to begin with).

In 2004 I was living in Sharjah and didn't have a liquor license, so a couple of my flatmates drove to U.A.Q on a thursday night, bought 3 bottles of rum and drove back to Sharjah, on the way their was a police patrol doing some sort of check but they were waving through a lof of people, we didn't get caught and enjoyed our drinks back in Sharjah, it was risky but we didn't get caught.
techsource2005
Msafi,
I would advise you to be careful when dealing with those " helpful taxi drivers" who are willing to deliver the booze to your place because I heard some of them are informants and will tip off the police, so gotta be careful

I am seriously considering a job offer in Dubai and have been reading many facts from this forum. There is a lot to read and digest. However, this thread on alcohol is not particularly clear to me.
What is this "Hole in the wall" that people have mentioned? What is involved with getting a "liquor license" and how easily, and where can, alcohol (beer) be obtained for personal home consumption?
msafi
- Scratcher wrote:

Not as easy as in Italy or the U.S. I'm sure. You can't find alcohol in convenience stores or grocery shops. For home consumption, you can go buy a few months supply from the whole in the wall in Ajman. It's about 25KMs away from Dubai (depending where you live in Dubai), but you'll get there in 2 hours in most cases because the traffic sucks. Personal home consumption of alcohol is fairly cheap. Alcohol consumption in bars and restaurants is much more expensive than in the United States, in my opinion.

What is this "hole in the wall" in Ajman? Is it a designated liquor store for expats? How can you use this "hole in the wall"? I guess you can not just turn up and by a few crates of beer!
Is Ajman in the UAE or does it require a border crossing?
A 2 hour drive for 25km's, that is some bad traffic

Ajman is part of the UAE. There is no border crossing required. Anyone can turn up and buy alcohol with cash, they don't even ID you. However, Ajman is an enclave of Sharjah, so you can't get there without passing through Sharjah, where alcohol is prohibited, so you need to be careful in your ~10KMs journey there.
I'm only preparing you for what to be expected here. We have some crazy laws down here...

Also you will see plenty of locals as well, with their trolleys stuffed full of alcohol.
Not saying it's legal, but plenty of people from Dubai seem to do it.
In fact, I would go so far as to say, that if people from Dubai stopped frequenting these shops, they might go out of business.

In the near 2 years of living in Dubai, I have not encountered a single discussion regarding the procurement of alcohol from these establishments without the warning that it is not without its legal issues.
I have yet to encounter also in those 2 years anyone who has got into trouble for it, but I have regularly bumped into people I know (some of the most unlikely) at these establishments.
Anyway, I think people are informed. Why not respond to this like nearly every other question with "do a search!" - why the need to play boy scout?

Ian, I respond the way I like, if you don't like it, thats your choice. I can tell you that many people are not informed and do not know. Whether you have ever met anyone who has got into trouble or not is not the point, that is only you, I have met and do know of people that have got into trouble, thats the simple truth. If you choose not to believe it, thats also your choice.

I really think I can talk my way out of any encounter with the police. There is just so many ways you can manipulate them, but you have to at least speak Arabic because they get intimidated otherwise.
You can apologize, admit your weakness and fault, appeal to their great culture by telling them that it encourages that you don't publicize peoples' vices, etc...The worst thing that will happen then is that they'll confiscate the stuff and let you go...

Basically a hole-in-the-wall is a liquor store, but there is no signage to actually say it is a liquor store. The origins of the name come from back when it was literally that... a hole in the wall. The one at Ajman operates both a liquor store, and still retains the classic hole-in-the-wall for bulk orders or fulfilling lists.
Plan your trip and times ahead, because these places are always very busy with people from Dubai.

Thing is: it's unnatural for the percentage of alcohol in your body to be 0, so there is a chance you might get pulled over and tested to have above 0% alcohol and get arrested! anything can happen down here, better be careful!

I certainly do not condone drink driving, I'm not sure which culture actually upholds it as a right or a value. Like many places in the Western World, Drink Driving is a serious offence here.
The general rule of thumb for DUI offences in Dubai are:
1. Go to gaol - directly to gaol for minimum 2 months.
2. Get fined, usually 1500 ~ 2000 dirhams.
You *may* get deported if the offence is serious enough, i.e. you are involved in an accident, and if you kill someone, kiss your a$$ goodbye, as you will pretty much be locked up for good (unless you can memorise the Q'ran)
Taxis are comparatively cheap in Dubai, about the same for 1 or 2 drinks on the town, and are a much safer means of getting home.
If you get caught transporting liquor AND you fail the alochol test, this is a double offence and likely to put yourself in serious shit.
Edit: not, you may also lose your job, but you also may not. This is pretty much limited to the discretion of the company - although if you work for a prominent company in Dubai or the Govt. you will probably have your contract cancelled. I know it states explicitly in my Employee Handbook that being convicted of a drug offence, including alcohol related offences, is instant termination.

As I am sure you have already seen written, it is against the law in Sharjah as well as Dubai. If you are caught in Sharjah with Alcohol in your possesion without a liquor license you will be arrested, gaoled and eventually deported.

If you or any one of your friends are non-muslims you can apply for a liquor license to the Sharjah Police (If you are residents of Sharjah) this will allow you to purchase from any legal liquor shop in Dubai and transport to your place of residence.
You should also understand that this license does not permit you to purchase from Ajman or UAQ as these establishments are not collecting the Federal Liquor Tax of 30%

Who can predict that, if you have an accident, and lets be fair you see them all the time, you will be in trouble.

For those of you interested, I recently discovered a little gem. On the way back from Hatta, check out the Holiday Inn, they have an Off-Licence there. It's very small, but the prices are comparible to the Barraccuda, no licence necessary. Stock up on your way back froma visa run or trip to the rock pools - nice!

No license necessary means what???, you most certainly do need a licence if you purchase alcohol in Dubai and transport it home. If you are stopped by the Police in Dubai, alcohol is found in your vehicle, you have a very good chance of being arrested, thats what people have to know, then if they do it, they also know what risks they are taking.

No licence means you don't need a liquor licence like you would in MMI or A&E.
I've never known anyone to get stopped, only people they suspect are buying it to sell on - like those who make the home deliveries.

The whole point is that this is supposed to be a "Help Forum", whether or not you know anyone that has been stopped is irrelevant, people have been caught, and punished for breaking the law.
It is absolutely no problem to mention these places, however in the same time people should be cautioned as to the risks and possible punishment if caught.

And that was the whole point, to give info on another outlet, which many don't know even exists.

Fayz,
I am certainly not trying to bully anyone.
The point is, people come to a forum such as this, seeking information, if you read the post from Chocs, it gives the impression that you can legally purchase from this outlet and the take home. This is most certainly not the case, and this is what people have to know. If they then choose to do it, this is a choice that they are free to make, however they should be correctly informed.
Chocoholic
But lets be honest S&O, how many people actually have liquor licences? Pretty much only those people who go to A&E and MMI, because travelling to the other outlets is an inconvenience.
CID even sit in the carpark of the Barraccuda on most days, watching who goes in and out and they're only interested in those who buy huge quantities for sell on i.e. the home delivery guys.
To put it in perspective, do you think the authorities would allow these places to even exist if they were going to check everyone? Look at the whole, rather than just pieces.
You're meant to have a licence to even go and drink in a bar, but does anyone have one? I think we all know the answer to that.

I completely disagree with you, many people do indeed have liquor licenses and use them because that is the legal way to behave, the risk of being caught at the Hole-in-the-wall or The Baracuda, whilst small is still too great for a lot of people and indeed the punishment if you are caught can be so severe, with imprisonment, deportation etc., it's just simply not worth it.
CID even sit in the carpark of the Barraccuda on most days, watching who goes in and out and they're only interested in those who buy huge quantities for sell on i.e. the home delivery guys.
Now why would the CID sit in the car park for this reason, when it is perfectly legal to purchase liquor in The Baracuda, because you are in UAQ, the illegal act starts when you leave UAQ / Ajman and enter Sharjah / Dubai.
To put it in perspective, do you think the authorities would allow these places to even exist if they were going to check everyone? Look at the whole, rather than just pieces.
The authorities in UAQ & Ajman do allow these places to exist because it is legal in these Emirates. They do not contribute towards the Federal liquor tax.
You're meant to have a licence to even go and drink in a bar, but does anyone have one? I think we all know the answer to that.

Plenty of people do indeed have a liquor license, it is the same one that is a legal requirement for drinking in a bar, why do you think all these shops such as A & E stay open, it's because they have plenty of customers, and guess what, they all have liquor licenses.
Once again Chocs, lets be clear why I keep replying to your posts in this regard, it is simply because people should know the legal requirement and the risks, whether or not they stay within the law is up to them, they do however deserve to know.

Dubai Knight
Every time you come through Dubai International airport, you are allowed to (legally) purchase 4 bottles of anything. You then exit the airport and climb in a cab or a friends car, or your own vehicle. What state the law now then?
The truth is, Dubai police take a sensible approach and, as long as there is no blatant abuse, they have a tolerant attitude. Technically, it is still illegal for men and women who are not married or part of the same family to live in the same accommodation. If this were strictly imposed, half of Dubai would be in prison!
Lets get real here. Yes, its 'illegal' to buy and transport alcohol without a licence. Its also illegal to drive at 135 kms per hour on the Emirates Road. Everyone does at some point, you just need to be careful.

Hey guys, i recently moved to Ajman. If you guys can tell me what is the exact location of "HOLE IN THE WALL" i would really appreciate it because i went to kempinski and i found nothing at all infront of KEMPINSKI & AJMAN BEACH HOTEl. There was just a ground and a palace or something.
If you guys can help me out here i will really appreciate it. Also is it possible to get in big trouble just to buy one bottle for myself????
Looking forward to hear from you guys soon

I'm a non muslim resident expat in dubai.
I do not have liquor permit.
If i buy 4 ltrs of alcohol at the airport duty free, am i legally allowed to keep & consume the liquor at my home in dubai?

Not as far as I know. "Possible" and "legal" are two different things. If you go to places like the Barracuda, you'll see people showing an sometimes.

we have purchased fake bacarrdi ones from Barracuda... closer inspection revealed that it was some sort of technical spirit. Be careful.

A lot of the "branded spirits" are indeed fake at many of the holes in the wall. I bought a 15dhm bottle of vodka in the dubai one and it was not Vodka.
Think about it, the cheapest vodka duty free at DXB/Abu D is around 40dhs.

alright lets ignore the legal issue . did u guys consider the source of alcohol from Ajman or UAQ !!
i am afraid they are fake !
and if yes how can we know if its fake or original any special signs ?
i once made my brithday party in Keva lounge in Bur Dubai.
and man 4 of us throw up after that night . we had some Gold Label and LEVEL vodka
i am 100% sure there is something with the alcohol cause the taste wasn't that strong plus come on all of us suffer from it.
can any one confirm the source please ?
thx

You can get the stuff you want from Abu Dhabi and don't have to pass through Sharjah. Given the "ordinary" traffic the trip could take almost the same time or less!!
Captain Australia
I go to the place in Abu Dhabi, round the back of Carefour on Airport road. From the marina it only takes about a hour, which is probably quicker than going to Barracuda, depending on the traffic.
They never ask for a license. There is a sign up saying credit card purchases must show a license so I always use cash, but probably they wouldn't even ask for one.
It's annoying that I have to go there, considering there is an A&E 5 minutes walk away, but I have an Abu Dhabi residence visa so apparently (according to the A&E guy) I need to get a NOC from the Abu Dhabi police to get a license in Dubai. The thought of going to the cop shop and explaining that makes my head hurt.

I have never seen Police to search the cars that are engaged in an accident.
