I know nothing about Arab literature.
Are there any famous books translated in English?

The most well known would be 1001 Arabian Nights stories. Many Disney aninimations are based on characters out of arabic books.

Well I think Arabian Nights makes for great stories, can't discredit stuff coz they were made into Disney movies, else we might have to tell the likes of Victor Hugo they're not considered serious writers

The Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam is famous...Hmm for contemporary Arab writers go for Naguib Mahfouz...there are lots of strong feminist writers in Arab Literature as well, like Nawal El Sedaawi though her views are a bit controversial for some of the more conservative...Why don't you give Kahlil Gibran a try as well?
