The list of the top 42 best cities in the world for 2011 has been released.
Dubai has long gone from the list.
Any thoughts?

I just opened the link and when Bankok appears as the best city I stopped. I can easyli think of 42 better cities.

NEW YORK is the best bar none...

Don't know anyone who has been to new york and did not have a good time (although i'm sure they exist).

I don't know about #1, but Shanghai is the most cosmopolitan city in mainland China and has a unique style that I've come to love after living here for 5 years. It's quite cool to be a part of so many changes (social, economic, etc.) happening all at once. Still some progress to be made but some of the nicest, most hospitable people I've ever met have been from here. Check it out sometime!

I have not seen many cities outside of the Netherlands. London, the Alps, Rimini/Italy, Bodrom/Turkey, Dubai and Israel. So there is not much for comparison. I love and hate Amsterdam the most. It made me and it broke me.

@Lying- swap out "Amsterdam" for "Shanghai" and that would describe my experience out here.

I'd also add Cairns to the list. Granted, not a world capital, but I never met an Aussie I didn't like and the rainforest/reef combo in Queensland is amazing.

It all depends on whether the London, NYC or LA-type of metropolis is your thing or not. I just find these places way too uncomfortable, too competitive, too money-obsessed and lacking in culture. Some say the same thing about Dubai, but I don't see it.

Also when you get to a population of around 2 or 3 million, public transport and congestion becomes an issue. I am no misanthropist, it's just unavoidable. For cities of this size, Vancouver and Melbourne are interesting.

Zurich, Vienna and Munich are also beautiful cities.

I wouldn't consider any city in China as good., unless of course you factor in the departure lounge at the airport

I love Dubai because Dubai is a one of the best state in the world where you can easily find all type of peoples having different nationalities. I think that in future Dubai state will be the best place for trading because of its economic growing policy.

You are right Agentjack, Bolton isn't a city, yet. We have bid for City status this year as HRH is dishing out city status to successful bidding towns as part of her Golden Jubilee.

Bolton is already on the map with many famous Boltonians, including Peter Kay, comedian. Vernon Kay and Sara Cox off of Radio 1, Alan Ball off of England World Cup Squad 1966, and Johnny Ball, brainbox and Zoe Ball's dad and the wonderful Hilda Baker.
That's just to name a few, oh and of course the very beautiful MrsMills.
