Singapore "report" Oct 14, 2006
If you ever lived in Singapore and now live in Dubai you need to have your head examined. Nevertheless, most coins have two sides and I know at least two cool people in Dubai/DF who used to live in Singapore. But still...

I only been there a week myself and found it quite appealing. Some of my friends who used to live there told me that "Singapore looks best in the backmirror on the way to the airport when you're leaving"....

First the weather,

Humidity = 350%
Visibility = 2.5 feet [see Kanelli’s Malasyan report regarding haze]

Upon arrival to most cities one is greeted with a cheerful announcement of “welcome to X city, the local time is Y and the current temperature is Z”. In Singapore the greeting went something like this: “We remind you that Capital punishment will be imposed on anyone convicted of a drug offense. The local time is….” My immigration card had the same warning in large red letters!

Two things stood out for me: how green and how quiet the city is (I know it’s a country but…) Quiet with respect to not having heard a single horn/bonnet blown during my 5 day stay. If not for trucks, buses and motorcycles the city would be much quieter.

Despite the high humidity I walked a lot. The plantings and flowers all over the city specially in public places are impressive. I walked around Fort Canning park which is a very nice and quiet “small” park. On the way back I stopped for something to eat at Istana Park which has a restaurant and public pool/fountain in the middle of the park.

Visited Sentosa Island via the cable car, and went to the museum and aquarium (underwater world). It was impossible to move inside the aquarium so I went down the water’s edged and walked along it for about a kilometer (until it was time to go back to the "Nazi" tour guide!).

Went to the Zoo both during the day and for the “night safari’. I think they have done and excellent job with how they kept he animals (except of course it never a good site to see large tiger pacing about or polar bears “pacing” in the water). The botanical garden is also great.

Went on this “duck” tour - nothing more than a goofy looking “amphibian” boat and where you ride on the road for ½ hour and then on the water for another ½ hour. The water part was interesting as you get a bit of history of the various buildings, etc. Nothing to do with duck…

I thought the food was excellent particularly since the major influences are Malasya, India and China. As to what and where to eat: wherever you are when you feel hungry – can’t miss.

Best sightseeing spot: Hotel lobby at my hotel as it is where many of the Singapore Airline flight attendants stay!

CLUBS, CLUBS, for the hipsters in the forum like Constantine, Maaad, XWR, Corc, Ian, et. al. - They Have Them. For the all folks: those clubs don't come in sets or have names like "Putters"...

The big news item on Tuesday was that the Legislature was about to pass a law with will now require the prosecutor to turn over evidence to the accused before trial not just at the trial. No wonder Singapore convicts and execute more people than anyone else! No wonder everyone “behaves”.

Taxis where inexpensive, spacious and clean and a good way to get around…

The haze was incredible. I am told that it normally it is not that hazy and it has to do with forest fires in Indonesia. Somehow I think that due to the humidity there must be a degree of haze most of the time.

That’s all folks. I recommend a visit and I will be back soon as a tourist!

ZAM
I took emirates and it was shoddy to say the least...they are always a transit flight to OZ or back from OZ...so all the seats that you want are filled up and the seats are tiny to begin with...i would highly recommend singapore airlines as thier service is much better every time that i have travelled with them...and the seats are a bit breezier...emirates on some sectors is nice...singapore not being one of them...though they do fly non stop...which is great!

I've been to Singapore a few times. Enjoyed it but would rather live in Dubai.

For those who seeks excitement, Singapore is really not that exciting. Can't argue that it is a rather pretty concrete jungle. And clean. Civilised. Regimented. Efficient and has a pro business environment. It has come a long way for a country with barely 40 years of history but its so bloody small. Conquering and governing is easier compared to nearby countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

There are good and there are bad, even in Dubai. If its stability you are seeking, Singapore is the place. If you are thrill seeking, dont even think about it. Singapore is good for its shopping and medical attention. I dont rate the food so much. For better food, go to Malaysia.

Come 2010, there will be 2 operating casinos on the small island. Cant wait. I like restaurants in casinos
