Is it by-law for companies to provide housing? Oct 19, 2006
Hi All, just a quick question. I was told that it is by-law that the employer is required to provide housing or at least housing allowance to the respective employee. Is this correct?

Thanks.

These days no one provides the housing. I don't know if the law is updated but yes it was the law.

Now they don't provide housing, they give you a housing allowance. Its upto you to find a place

Its not fair because the rents are so high and the allowance usually given covers half your salary sometimes.

The law needs to change.

And what if not even housing allowance is given? Is that illegal then?

usually they would split up your salary into basic + housing +allowances(transport)..and on top of that they usually give you a moving allowance+furniture allowance (in some cases)...an annual ticket home...private medical coverage (again depending on your employer)...and gratuity (singapore version of CPF-again depends on your employer)...try and negotiate all of these into your contract...this is a pretty stantard "expat" contract...but now a days as nosoup has pointed out...employers usually dont give you accomodation provided for...unless they have appartments or perhaps if you work in real estate...you might be able to ask them to provide accomodation and give you a basic salary instead... ...hope that helps...

that would depend on a lot of factors..

like your career level, position in company etc.. usually accomodation allowances are provided as a part of the total salary package.. and goes for most employees from middle management onwards..

quite a few companies give full or part allowance for accomodation..

everyone else is just expected to survive from the ever increasing rentals.
