Either your brother had the game in his possession, or he did not. If your mother paid the Dh200, then you should have left the shop with a copy of the game. If you didn't, then the shopkeeper has stolen Dh200 from you, and you are morally obligated to report him to the police. If you paid and took ...

The reason for this is that blocked site list is semi-outsourced through a US-based (or Canada-based) net censorship company, so they tend to list more English-language than Arabic-language sites. At least as it has been explained to me. Try irc #dubai on the undernet to realise the utter, utter fut...

Despite the prevalence of unmarried couples living together in Dubai, it is illegal. And the penalties are more severe if either of you are Muslim. If you do intend to live together, then keep a low profile, and put everything in one person's name. Have the address of a work colleague available to u...

No. Taxis are incredibly cheap. If you live close to your work, in a metro area, you can easily get by with not car: Dubai Transport taxis are excellent, and can be quickly ordered straight to your door. You can also arrange a shared car lift if you have a slightly longer commute - this is also a ni...

In terms of Aeronautics, Emirates is a big employer and expanding (if that's the appropriate area of aeronautics for you).

The main thing to be aware of is that certain jobs are paid less by nationality, and accounting is very often one of these.

Dh10,000 k PLUS accommodation and health is pretty good going in Dubai these days. Hardly anyone is getting packages any more. If you have a big family you might struggle to pay private school fees on that - remember there is no free state education here for expats. You can long-term lease a car for...

Transformers: they will work fine here, don't worry. Just buy better quality, fused ones if possible. Certainly no need to re-buy all your electrical equipment here. Re clothing costs: if you want to deck yourself out in designer gear, you'll struggle at that salary level. Western imported clothes a...

is it easier if we got married

Yes - but you can get away with cohabiting if you are discreet - though it is illegal. If either of you needs to sponsor the other then marriage is a must.

There is an enormous amount here for younger children to do, but I understand from parents that things can be a little dull for teens, especially older teens. Also things like "Saturday jobs" are illegal for school age kids, and things like underage drinking and smoking are much more serious offense...

Re: British-Asian - Is Dubai racist?

I have heard the there is a class system and that Asians are treated as second class citizens. Is this true? Yes, regrettably there is. Is there any advice for someone like myself to avoid such discrimination? Mix with educated, professional people and you shouldn't have any problem. What will happ...

The junction at Hard Rock Cafe/Media City is literally hell on earth. Until they finish the other junctions, you literally have to plan your daily travels around it. For travelling south you can now go via the Marina and slip onto Sheikh Zayed from there, but that junction.... *shudder*...

There isn't very much mixing, compared to the amount of multiculturalism here. Particularly between nationals and expats.

Oh they are lovely - I so love camels.

Some of the most spectacular sand dunes are just off the Al Dhaid road, before junction 11? 12? - there is a side road that goes past an Etisalat substation - so you'd want to be careful taking pics there - but the colour and shapes are glorious.

Hundreds if thousands of people cohabiting does not making it legal.

Being from a western country myself, I think there is nothing wrong with people living together.

But I am aware that it is illegal here.

Taxi drivers earn shockingly low wages, I always tip them. What a princess of a job. And unlike in most countries, they are only paid on mileage. So if the poor bastard is stuck for 30/40 minutes in the rush hour - which is his valuable time, after all - he doesn't get any more money. Taxi drivers e...

From the cases I have read of, it totally varies.

I imagine it might also make a difference if you were a rich UK muslim woman compared to a poor Bangladeshi maid, but I couldn't say for certain.

Unless you are high-level and critical to a business (eg director/senior executive level), such that they would be prepared to employ you on an (illegal) "visa hop" basis, then if Hep B is on the ban list, you unfortunately don't stand a chance. If you did come and work here on a visit visa or spous...

I wouldn't bother taking the risk. Quite apart from the fact that the book is apparently as dull as hell. If you're that desperate to read it, buy it abroad (or get a friend to) and glue it into a different cover. I personally have Amazon stuff shipped through Aramex's "shop and ship" - and from wha...

This was possible in the "old days" but now Saudi is a massive problem, espcially if you have women in your family. You may have to ferry the car to Iran and go round that way.

It sounds a fabulous plan if you can arrange it. Jordan is absolutely glorious, especially Petra.

Re: South African moving to Dubai - Some Questions and Conce

a) What would the cost be for a full time nanny? As little as around Dh1,000 a month, plus annual visa fees. c) Is it possible / easy to send money to SA? The usual moneylaundering laws mean that large transfers get flagged, but AFAIK there are no limits on what you can remit. d) What is a good pla...

seriously though if you are thinking bigger than 5 tonne I think Women aren't allowed

Really? That is hideously backwards if true. I can imagine there aren't many UAE women desperate to enter the trucking sector, but they should still be allowed to if they want.

Worth some investigation...
