Prob periods

I've been told that some employers in the UAE have even longer probation periods like nine months or even one year.

German TV

You might be able to get DW-TV (Deutsche-Welle) in the UAE. Certainly, DW-TV can be found in much of Asia with programs in German and English. Also, I think that they have an Arabic service as well.

The Gulf

Certainly, there are other bodies of water with different names. Take, for example, the body of water between Korea and Japan. The Japanese call it the Sea of Japan ("Nihonkai") while the Koreans call it the East Sea ("Donghae"). Even the British and the French, who are both in the EU, can't agree o...

Gulf specs

Looking at many of the car ads here I keep seeing references to "Gulf specs," but I don't know what that means. Although I did try an Internet search, I couldn't find the answer. And, I don't want to ask a car dealer about something that seems so basic to the car market in Dubai. I assume that Gulf ...

Fax film

Here's a very technical question. I'm looking for some place in the UAE that sells film suitable for a SHARP fax machine. I already checked the SHARP website. It listed Jacky's as the authorized dealer for SHARP fax machines. Unfortunately, however, so far I've been to two of their outlets in Dubai ...

WC at HRC

For those still looking for a place to watch the World Cup, you can try the Hard Rock Cafe near Dubai Internet City.

There's no special admission or cover charge. You just order some drinks and/or food.

For the match that I saw at HRC, they actually had commentary in English and no commercials.

Car

There is a public bus system of sorts here, but it is not as good as what you might be used to elsewhere. Many companies provide private bus or van services for their workers as a result. For example, a construction company will bus its workers to and from building sites. Are you from China? Compare...

Working in a store

Some people who work in stores here in Dubai get very low pay by Western standards. I've heard of cases of some people (Asian workers) in stores only making around five hundred dirhams (AED 500) per month. How they can live on that in the UAE and also send money back to their home countries I don't ...

If you haven't done so already, look into the medical malpratice insurance situation in the UAE. I'm not a doctor, but I do know that doctors in the states usually have to shell out a lot for insurance coverage. From what I've heard foreign nurses mostly get paid very low salaries here. So, the sala...

Re: Notary Public

Hi guys, I'm looking for notary public services to draw up a document. Does anyone know what the procedure is, and where I can seek notary public services? As strange as it might sound, there seems to be a notary office connected with the Dubai Courts. I've seen the signs for it, but I've never use...

Holidays

The religious holidays can be a bit tricky here because they tend to be announced close to the day. Even though the Islamic calendar is a lunar one, the holidays don't always fall when one might expect. In fact, the exact dates of religious holidays (at least when viewed in terms of the Western cale...

The best bet would be to try to arrive/leave on late night flights!

In fact, there are quite a few evening flights to/from Dubai to various cities.

Passports normally are property of the government that issued them.
Ideally, the embassies should do something.

headgear

I was wondering about the different types of traditional headgear worn by Emirati and other Gulf Arab men.

Do they indicate tribal affliations?

Some younger men just wear baseball caps. Are they trying to just look cool? Or, are they perhaps trying to hide something?

Domes on mosques

Is it true that you can tell if a mosque is Sunni or Shia by the color of the dome?

For example, I've been told that a green dome means the mosque is Shia.

Just wondering....

Thanks for the answers.

Although I had read about the baseball cap with dishdasha look before coming to the UAE, it still struck me as a bit funny when I actually saw young local lads wearing such combos for the first time.

Domes

Thanks!

I was wondering about those blue domes, etc. as well as the green ones.

I've seen alot of different types of mosques around Dubai. I assume that most of them are Sunni.

Staying outside of the UAE while on a residence permit

More post offices please!

Sorry, I don't understand your point exactly.

I think that it is normal to have a postal system run by a national government and maybe some private sector parcel services by the likes of DHL, FedEx, etc.

Re: Jakarta

I will be going to Jakarta (not Bali) in Indonesia. What's there to do and see, etc. Yes, it really depends on what you want to see and do. There is a part of the city with some old Dutch influence still lingering. Yet, in terms of history, Jakarta is not as interesting as, say, Bangkok with all th...

Kish Island

I've been thinking about visiting Kish Island (no, not for a visa run, but just to see what the place is like).

Any good/bad impressions of the island?

Do non-Muslim women have to wear the hejab on Kish Island?

As for booze, is Kish Island officially "dry" like the rest of Iran?
