Workers protest bringing Shk Zayed road to a halt! Sep 19, 2005
Need news section for this!

This morning outside the Hard Rock cafe interchange 5, one thousand wokers sat down by the side of the road to apparently protest against lack of pay and living problems. The began to walk down the road causing traffic chaos from about 7am. Eventually they were all put on buses escorted by armed guards and driven away.

What the heck is this place coming to when these poor guys resort to this kind of action to get what they're owed. Stuff the protesting laws, if this is the kind of action required to bring there issues to light, then why not?

Well Hearing about the protest is a great thing, atleast they are not sitting idly while greedy businessmen dont pay their wages. This is start, UAE is growing well basically Dubai. The protest in other words is not against companies but is against Minsitry of Labour,
Recently Khaleej Times accused ministry of labour of being ineffiecient.
Ministry of Labour doesnt enforce strict laws against companies not paying wages but enforce on those who dont employ nationals. If it was me I would have kicked everyone workin ineffectively and with no knowledge of economics. Enforce strict laws on wages and hour. 8 hours maximum, more than that overtime and create Labour unions for expatriates. They are making Labour unions for nationals (never seen one)

I hope these protesters get the wages they want and the living conditions they deserve. but the source of the problem is ministry not companies.

Hmmmm but what is the reality,

A few of the organizers will be beaten up and deported by those friendly armored escorts that picked them up from the side of Shk Zayed

The rest will be paid 2 of the 5 or so months wages that they are entitled to and because they have no other choice are stuck.

The only chance these slaves have is if we stop buying houses, renting, etc. from the companies that indulge in these activities, are you prepared to do something about it? Am I? Progress and growth at what price? The same work conditions were evident in Canada with the treatment of Chinese when building the railway and there are examples from every other industrialized country out there.

Let’s get some heat in this thread; I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Maybe Choco will even get her news section.

damn too bad i am out of town and missed that ..

but seriously the goverment needs to form some sort of union or NGO that will represent these poor guys, provide them with consul and organize them.

I am not from the construction industry so maybe someone who is can give us more insight on the situation of these guys..

how much guarantees do the developers ask from the subcontractors to ensure that these workers are being treated humanely ? if any ..

numerous reasons..

developer pays... but the co. has other better exps to take care of...
so the workers suffer.

next.. the co's. are normally owned by a higher up dish dash... who organizes various projects (thru influence) in a short span thereby blockin all the cash flow... workers suffer...

unplanned diversification of money also lands up workers in trouble ...

whats hard to understand is, why action was only initiated when the major expressway was blocked...

bottom line... a few  black sheeps... most of the Co's pay in time.. labor department is pretty strong on that ... atleast in Dubai....

   ..!!!
