The place to be in the Autumn is Canada. I spent a few days at Niagra On The Lake (I think that's what it was called) and the colours were amazing. Spectacular.

That would be more associated with St Nicholas, who is now called Father Christmas or Santa Claus. He was actually German and there is a story about him walking miles through the snow to deliver presents to deserving children at an orphanage...which where the whole present and climbing down the chimney thing comes from.

He originally wore a long green cloak with a white fur lined hood, however Coca Cola hijacked him in the 1930's and dressed him in their corporate red for an advertisement. Ever since then, he has appeared in red.

December the 25th is actually the date of the winter solstice (shortest day) and in pagan northern Europe was traditionally celebrated with feasting and the burning of a large log for the community to keep warm. In order to defuse the continued pagan worship of the sun, the early Christians church leaders deliberately manipulated the dates of the nativity story to co-incide with the winter solstice. Apparently Jesus was actually born in March, but this also fell too close to the celebration of Easter for their liking.

The traditional christmas feast was originally goose, however the introduction of turkeys from America in the 1700's and a desire by the breeders to sell their wares, involved them hijacking the American celebration of Thanksgiving and making turkey the choice to feed many hungry mouths as the birds were large enough to amply stuff a large family.

Christmas cards began being sent in the late 1800's/early 1900's due to the introduction of an efficient mail service and the card companies soon latched onto the feeding frenzy.

As a result, christmas is now a commercial pond filled with sharks circling around your blood money.

Don't get me wrong, I love the whole thing! The smell of pine needles, the tinsel, the shiny glass balls, the glittering presents under the tree, Slade and Wham on the stereo...

I just try and stay away from the more commercial aspects and see it as a time to enjoy the company of friends and give a little cheer.

@BM - What gave you the idea that I didn't follow footie? I lived in england long enough to consider myself at least part british even though I wasn't brought up there. :D
While I don't support Mancherster "Citeh" I do support....I hope this doesn't to any animosity....Tottenham..."common you spurs". Yep...not your nemisis Man U but "we" (I love saying "we" even though I contribued nothing) did steal the 4th spot from you and a champions league place....hope we can still be friends :D

How do you feel good about the locals buying you guys up and investing a gazillion? Do you think it will get you the title in the next 3 years?

Yes, it s serious it s going on for couple of weeks now, and as these few weeks have been rainless and windless, it is worse now. Usually we have snow in Tehran in Dec and JAn, but for the past 2 years there was no snow at all, so dont raise your hope for Feb!

@Mel, sorry to hear you're suffering Mel! Thankfully that doesn't happen where I live, the only polution I have suffered today was when by beautiful daughter let rip in the car on the way to school. Teenagers eh?

@Joe, I thought you had posted somewhere that you weren't bothered about footie? Was it on the Qatari/Russian thing, maybe not, it could have been my over active imagination  Anyways Spurs eh? We lived in London when I was a kid and I remember my dad taking me to see Spurs play Citeh, Citeh got beaten and I cried, I think that was the last match my dad took me to. BTW he is a Sunderland fan, I bought him a brick in the Stadium of Light and it has his name on. He is well proud of that!
As for Citeh being bought by that lot from AD, well they can crack on as far as I'm concerned but all the money in the world can't make a team and we have some way to go. Tevez is a little gem, he needs to get his wife over, it's no good him wanting to travel half way round the world to see his family every couple of weeks. I've got a nice little flat not far from the City centre he could use, he just has to ask. Another favourite is that rather imposing figure of Adebayour. A favourite of Beth's too, she is turning out to be her mothers daughter.

And @ Zubber, I see you have a bit of a sense of humour! Stick with it my son! I know the English sense of humour is hard to get sometimes but you're doing ok so far!

Benwj, I see you have recovered from last night, apologies! BM has had a hang over all day, that'll teach her. :x

You lucky bum!!

I bet there is a fireplace somewhere behind you, facing these windows!!

Would love to come over and imbibe a glass or two (or perhaps a bottle or two) of Jacbos Creek Chard with ya. We'll sit on the floor, maybe on top of shaggy sheep skin, watching the snow, and getting toasted by the lovely warmth,.. coming from both the fireplace and the Aussie Chard.

I'll provide the vino, and you just provide the ambience!!!

How does that sound, my dear????

The same to you, Bud. Thx! I also see your name up there.

I've been asked to keep an eye only on the biggest trouble maker in General. A British mom who hates everyone and everything, except moi. The reason: because we're love!! At least, for the time being!!!

But don't worry, I'll take care of her, and you take care of the rest.

I'm told she's a handful. So I expect to be quite busy for some time!!

Oh... No... I should've not said that. Now, she may try to take advantage of our love. She may start getting really wild thinking she's now got a big Wasta!!

Well, take heed Madam!! Sorry, no Wasta works with TJ, love or no love!!!

Tom, that just sounds perfect! Yes, I can confirm I have two fireplaces and a nice coalfired Rayburn in the kitchen where the kettle boils all day long. A perfect place to end the working day, and a very happy house it is too. You're more than welcome to join me Tom, but you will need your Satnav.
