How is the se xism issue in Dubai? Nov 30, 2006
Well hello peeps. In lack of anything to do, I thought to bring up a thread
here. I have been in Egypt, and it was the most awful place I've ever been
to. Not because of the country like that. Actually I am and always been
interested in Egypt and the rest of the Arabic countries as far as I know. BUT
(oh yeah, here comes the little tiny tiny BUT), I can't stand how they treat
non-egyptians/non-arabic FEMALES. I mean seriously, you can't walk in the
street without people trying to paw you, staring at you, calling you humiliate
things and doing that annoying freaking sound "kss kss kss". I can't explain
how much I fakking hate that sound.

Anyway. Since the war in Iraq it kind of have been like that there too, and also
it became worse. Girls can't even walk to the store alone in Iraq anymore
without anyone try to grab them, humiliating them or anything like that. Girls
have to walk in groups there now.

I know people are like this in Libanon too. Also in Tunisia. Well, actually it is
pretty much every where in the Arabic countries were ever you go. It is
though more than each country depending on where you are and stuff. So
my question is, how is it in Dubai? Can a girl walk down the street looking
normal without people yelling "kss kss kss" (GAAAAAH!) and trying to
grab her? Or does it exist, but not as serious as it is in Egypt or Iraq?

A female can walk alone in Dubai though there are some awful instances (freaky look and staring, throwing some phone numbers, slowing down their cars as if i need a ride etc..) but everything is manageable. In fact, I am walking home alone after midnight from work, and nothing happens to me yet (God Forbids). I already know how to give them a dirty look and of course to grab anything to throw at them for those mischievous teenagers arab peeps. Ratings? So far, i can give a passing remark.

well i suspect they will do more than to stare at u !
i heart pretty nasty stories!

unfortunately that happens in all countries: and it has nothing to do with nationality: it's a lack of respect and basic education

and yes i agree with u: it's so annoying

Ok, well thank God that sounds great. This is the only thing that makes me
worried to come to Dubai. Otherwise there is nothing else to think about. I
guess it is a very light version of this kind of things in Dubai, something I can
handle I guess. Sounds like the rest of Europe then, I hope.

"unfortunately that happens in all countries"

I guess you didn't understand my question. I know it's in all countries, my
question is in what grade it is in Dubai. If it's like Egypt and Iraq. What it is
in Egypt and Iraq is not comparable with the "normal" grade in Europe or
something like that.

Burken, are you male or female? If you are male, there's nothing for you to worry about other than the reckless drivers (if you wish to own a car & drive here).

You can even see ladies wearing revealing clothes in public places and more in malls, disco, clubs & pubs. The freaky staring and men trying to get hooked will always be there, and mind you some of them are very persistent. But if you tell them to stop bothering you or else you'll call the police, they won't bother anymore.

High Cost of Rents - This is the main problem here & does affects everyone's budget.

How "usual" are those stories then? I mean; do you guys know what I mean
when I talk about Iraq or Egypt? If you do; is it THAT serious/much, or kind
of "lighter" and more safe/less? I mean; the stories you've heard, are they
so usual that you even can see it just when you walk down the streets? And
is there any different of how does the shit? Like are the locals more nasty
than the foreigns, or vice verse, or the problem is the same no matter where
the person comes from? Not cause it really matters, just interesting to know.

Damn, now I got too much questions there. Hope you can answer and read it.

Ok, then it sounds very good. I am a female. I don't think a man would even
care about this or would let it be a problem so he won't go to Dubai. I mean;
it's not the men getting that humiliated, so they can pretty much stand it and
living their life without getting bothered.

If you are asking about peace and order, Dubai is way OK compared to Iraq and Egypt as per your description. And ladies here learned how to fight for survival in times of uncalled situation.

Know your rights, don't harm anyone, be polite and don't violate anything - YOU WON'T BE IN TROUBLE.

Well I didn't mean peace and order; I mean the disgusting treatment of
women and how I explained it. But I think you gave me the answer; it's not
that bad as I thought and I guess I am going to handle it. If it's like Egypt
then I would probably be jailed as soon as I arrive.

Dubai is OK dear don't worry. Come to dubai. You'll get used to the freaky staring. Majority of the expats came from asia and neighbouring arab countries...we're like fruit salads here.

Burken, you will like Dubai like everybody does. :D So when are you coming to Dubai? Dubai Gov't should pay me something for promoting the place...hehehe.

I am planning to come in a year. Yeah I know, it's like thousands years until
then, but I have to start planning from now.

the case is well dealt with by asc_26. Staring is not the problem but it is fact that no body has sufficient courage to bother anybody, male or female, here in Dubai without his or her will and wish. random cases of misbehave happen all over the world but the ratio is very small here. I have seen women going back to their home even after midnight in taxis and their own cars or even by walk without any fear. But you know five fingers are not equal so always bad is attached with lots of goods. Above all some fear of law is hear.

Yes, some men will stare and say things to you, but on the whole I haven't found any men threatening. I'm sure there are some desperate ones though, so it might happen that some try to touch. Just stand up for yourself. The way some men behave here takes some getting used to. I never experienced the same kind of leering etc. as there is here in Dubai in countries like Canada, USA, France, Finland, Germany, Poland, Malaysia or Hong Kong.

You should come to Hackney, Tottenham or Harlesden in London, that should help you deal with these minor problesm in Dubai. COmpared to most countries although I havent lived there for a long enough period, I think Dubai is safe although it woudl be better to hear the view of peopele who live there.

Guys, we are talking about s.e.xism, leering, catcalling etc. Not physical attacks on women.

some guys will look, but not the same look as you will get in egypt. they wont even talk to you or make you feel the same as the guys would in egypt.
