It will be a big move for me if I accept it that is why I'm asking for comments/advise.

Another trader who moved to DUBAI keeps saying that it's not worth it for him and he will return to US after his contract finishes in Feb 2009 but I thinking more of maybe he's not the saving type but not really sure.

If the package is the same and you save on the taxes, I would think that it is beneficial to come here. Just a thought though, are you not liable for US taxes even working abroad?

Depends on citizenship and passport. If you have both passports, enter Dubai on your Filipino passport = no tax to US GVT.

Oh well your true intention in coming to Dubai is so obvious. Ikakahiya ka ni Gabriella Silang. Ang tawag nila sa pinay na ganyan ay cheap. Change your mindset please.

Well, to be honest, that's probably true...but I'm not sure if that should be your main priority! What happened to your job?? lol...

Anyway sassy, remember that 'the grass is not always greener'. You might end up with some boring guy who can't dance, can't sing, who only loves to drink in the pub....and worst of all, hates the smell/sight of baguong!! Then where would you be??

That's a silly thing to say.
I do understand where you're coming from, but as a statement it's still far too general.

Burton, i know where i came from. The place where I came from can fully comprehend filipinas far better than anyone else. If sassy's intention of coming to Dubai is to find a foreign bf then she could be one of the many fishes in the market, who are vulnerable to abuse and does help foreigners besmirch our reputation. Get real!

I am a Filipina by the way.

Could be silly but it's true. Hence, most if not all filipinos will give a smirk to pinays with a foriegner, especially to married filipinas back home and still manage to s.l.u.t-away with a foreign bf in Dubai.

Burton, you still have to do a lot of assignments for you to understand pinoys/pinays. Filipinos in their social strata.

I've heard about the same allowances given to Filipino expats, but i have never heard of AED100K monthly salary yet. However, that kind of job needs brainy professionals and they should be paid well.

Anyway, it's way too good for a package kabayan. You and your family can live a decent life with that package here in Dubai. Good Luck!

SCY,

You seem like an articulate person so let's see if we can discuss this in a reasonable manner. I think we can...

SCY wrote:If sassy's intention of coming to Dubai is to find a foreign bf then she could be one of the many fishes in the market, who are vulnerable to abuse...

Yes, if this really is Sassy's main reason behind her coming to Dubai - her sole intention, or the greatest part of it - then I agree, it is rather odd. However, I seriously doubt this is the case but again, just for the record, I agree. Imo, the remark was a bit too frivolous, a little too 'careless'. And I can see why it might trivialize what can be a fairly serious topic. You obviously found it, in some sense, offensive.

But, what you seem to have no idea about is how incredibly careless and offensive your own remark is! Go back and read what you wrote. Actually, better still, here it is again:

SCY wrote:Filipina look cheap with foreigners.

Now, are you honestly telling me that you can't see anything wrong with that statement, your statement?? Whether you like it or not, and whether this is how you come across in the 'real' world, your posts - on this topic at least - sound very ignorant and also exude a real sense of...hostility.

This is not me 'going over the top'. Again, I just don't think you have any idea about the consequences of making such a sweeping statement, a statement that directly offends people like me and my girlfriend.

If someone said ''All Muslims are violent or all Muslims look violent'' (whatever that means!), would you agree? I certainly hope not!

If someone said ''All English blokes are yobs or look like yobs'', again - would you agree?

We can keep coming up with statements like these all day! Are all Russians gangsters? Are all Cabin Crew promiscuous? Nationality, job description, religion...however you want to do it, the list is endless.

Nobody - in their right mind - would agree with any of those above statements. So why on earth would anyone agree that ''filipinas look cheap with foreigners''?

You have to understand that your post also exudes a strong sense of superiority; it is inherent in what you write and how you write it. By saying that filipinas who date or marry foreigners look cheap/are cheap you are directly implying - whether you realize it or not - that Filipinas who do not date or marry foreigners are in someway superior, somehow better. Is that really the case SCY? Are you better than me - or my girlfriend? Or, for example, is the Filipino guy who marries a Filipina better than me? Are all the Filipino couples that I see walking hand in hand better than us - my gf and I?? Surely, you have to realize how absurd this is...

Look, my intention is not to jump all over your posts and in any case, you seem quite capable of putting up an argument yourself. But I do think that you need to be very careful about the statements you make, and their implications...

And finally, regarding:

SCY wrote:Burton, you still have to do a lot of assignments for you to understand pinoys/pinays. Filipinos in their social strata.

I have no need for any assignments, no need to do any homework. I am not an anthropologist and Filipinos are not my object of study. This is not an academic subject and I have no desire to put the Filipino - or any other nationality - under a microscope. But perhaps, to use the same metaphor, you would be well advised to turn that microscope on your own thoughts, feelings and pronouncements.

Not wanting to do this to death but again, the hostility in your posts is quite remarkable:

SCY wrote:especially to married filipinas back home and still manage to s.l.u.t-away with a foreign bf in Dubai.

You write this as if the overwhelming cause, the no.1 reason behind marital disharmony in the Philippines is the dreaded...gasp!...'foreign boyfriend'! Lol!...

Do you have any idea how many Filipinos - here in Dubai - are currently conducting affairs with their own fellow Filipinos???

And you tell me to 'get real'? C'mon, please...

well said burton.

Having said that though, I am a filipina, raised in NZ and Australia since I was 4. I married an Aussie and consider myself Aussie. And whilst I do get some curious looks (from other filipinos mainly) because I have a 'western' husband, it bothers me a bit, that somehow I fit into that 'filipina with foreign man' stereotype that SCY portrays...

by the way, aninox that is an awesome salary and can you tell me what you do and how do I do it

Thanks Dee, and btw, nice to meet you.

Like you say, the 'Filipina with foreign boyfriend/husband' is a cultural phenomena, a 'syndrome' perhaps! There is no point in trying to deny this. But the reasons are very obvious and very straightforward. There is no mystery involved...

But look, while we are talking about it quite candidly, yeah I admit it! If or when I see some ancient-looking 'typical' western-expat-bloke with a 'I love Cebu' T-shirt (let's go for the whole stereotype!) with some nubile(!) young Filipina (another stereotype, I know), of course I think to myself ''yep, that's a bit lame!''

Harmless. Not exactly doing anyone the greatest harm but yeah, kind of lame - you know what I mean, everyone does. You cringe a little bit, have a private momentary giggle. We all do it...

But this is the worst example of its kind. There are thousands of relationships that bear nothing in common with the example I deliberately painted above. And as such, they shouldn't be subject to such blanket statements as the ones I've come across in this thread...

I am not an avid fan of fisking style post. Burton, I understand why you have reacted this way. I should have linked the thread posted by a forumer in the Romance forum. My bad I didn’t correctly quote the title of the thread, which is “Filipina in Dubai Looked Cheap”, instead I wrote Filipina look cheap with foreigners. To make it clear, I was referring or pointing out a thread in romance forum, and for sassy to get it straight how some people in Dubai viewed Filipinas this way.

I was pointing a fact that people (Filipinos or not) in Dubai have this kind of impression towards Filipina. And coming here in Dubai to find a foreign boyfriend will only add to taint the reputation of Filipinas.

We should understand the underlying reasons why people have this kind of say or impression towards Filipinas, because maybe they’re right based on their experiences and based on what they’ve witnessed. How many Filipinas went back home pregnant from a foreign boyfriend? Or How about Filipinas who are now in jail, because of having an illicit affair with foreigners? How many Filipinas became prey and victim of abuse in the hands of foreigners? I’ve seen a lot of them and they’ve been warned. I’ve seen the worst of pinays in the hands of foreigners. And who would most likely be a victim? Who would most likely be a prey? I think you know the answers.

Having said all these, it is uncalled for you to call me an ignorant. Did I name call you?

Being a Filipina, it is evident that we are family oriented people. Just like anyone else, it irritates me to see married Filipinas having an affair with foreigners. Why? These kinds of ladies are materialistic and not contented with what their Filipino husband can bring home for the family to share, so they seek greener pastures for the family but ending having an affair with a foreigner. They are thinking that foreign men can satisfy their materialistic desires, and these materialistic desires add to besmirch our reputation. And of course, I too am aware with what’s going on with pinays having an affair with fellow married Filipinos. Since I have reacted to sassy’s post of her getting bigger chances of having a foreign bf here in Dubai, then we have to limit the topic to Filipinas in the hands of foreigners.

I’ve read your reply to Deedee, and I have to agree that it is partly a social stigma.

When I first came to Dubai, I’ve noticed how foreigners treat us upfront. I wonder why? I’ve not done anything flirtatious act, but why I was being “bastos” or treated badly? I felt insulted when a foreigner gave a remark that Filipinas are just worth a mobile phone. See? Why they’ve said that? Because some are worth a mobile phone only, materialistic and cheap.

The reason why I’ve suggested you to do an assignment is that Filipino culture per se is in itself diverse. There are liberated pinays raised in the US or in western countries; the conservative Filipino-chinese descent; and Filipinas coming from certain Islands back home have different social background than those of the Luzon areas. Hence, we clash when it comes to this issue. It has been advised by the Philippine Embassy here in UAE to all Filipinos to behave and to conduct themselves accordingly and not by degrading the Filipino community (Can’t count the cases handled by Phil Embassy due to flirtatious,s.luti.ness and cheap kabayans). A rotten tomato should be removed as not to rot the rest of the healthy tomatoes inside the basket.

I hope this will serve an eye opener for Filipinas out there, who are dreaming of coming to Dubai to find a foreign boyfriend. The very reason of coming to Dubai is to work, to showcase your skills and to earn a living. We should earn a living based on what the companies are paying to us, earning a living that will make the entire Filipinos proud, and not by finding a foreign boyfriend and used them.

We should carry our values everywhere we go. My two fils..

Since you have an aversion to 'fisking', fine - no more fisking. I actually had no idea what the term meant so I had to wiki it. I guess you learn something new everyday...

My 'problem' is simply this; it seems to me that you are not just saying 'this is what many Filipinos think'. It seems very much the case that you are also saying 'and this is what I think' i.e., the view that Filipinas with foreigners are cheap has merit, has validity. That you are endorsing it.

I mean, c'mon, if you had said ''sadly, this is what many people tend to think, right or wrong" or even 'this is what many people think and to be fair, there are some reasons behind it" - do you really think I would be so offended. Of course not. But again, sorry to say but I have nasty suspicion that the view is your own.

So then, let me ask you straight. Of course, you have no obligation to answer but I would be interested to know. What do you think? In your own opinion, are the vast majority of Filipinas who marry/date foreigners cheap? Are they, as a general rule, 'sluts'?

I have already said that I myself, along with many others, often have reservations when I see couples that somehow fit the stereotype at its worst. And that this is quite a natural reaction. But this is very different to endorsing the statement as a general, blanket condemnation.

So again, back to the question - 'what do you think?' You see my girlfriend and I walking in Ibn Battutta, sitting in Chowking (!), heavens forbid even a 'Filipino <gasp!> nightclub' - in short, doing all the myriad things which everyone ellse does, just minding our own business - and do you automatically raise your eyebrows and say to your friend 'oh god, what a slutt dating a foreigner' and 'oh dear, what a typical foreign man dating a cheap pinay'? Does your friend shake her head in agreement and sigh plaintively with a heavy heart? Is this you?

Because if it is, of course I 'have a problem' with it! Who wouldn't?

Lastly, c'mon SCY - you have to grow a thicker skin. I mean, you can't have it both ways. I didn't actually call you ignorant or superior but yes, I certainly said that your posts sound ignorant and exude a sense of superiority - on this topic at least. But look, if you feel that those remarks were uncalled for, then I apologize - I'm sorry and, sincerely so.

But, I'm just surprised that someone who comes out with the statements that you have made and therefore, practically - to all intents and purposes -endorses them (this is the point after all right?) can take such offense...

Burton, I’ve pointed out a thread but it doesn’t mean I’ve endorsed it. It was more on pointing out a reality that some people think otherwise, and yes unwelcome by some. In fact, it should serve a warning for us Filipinas not to be easy and too trusting. Filipinos fun loving nature has been taken advantage by some foreigners, but I can’t blame the latter for we, Filipinos allowed these things to happened to us. I can’t deny that those unpleasant actions of Filipinas and actions of foreigners done to Filipinas irk my sensitivity. I felt sad for Filipinas who tend to give up their ideals in exchange for materialistic desires.

If I didn’t react to sassy’s post, I think she will not retract her statement. But then, I appreciate her defense tactic – treating it a joke.

Since you have asked about my opinion, I think I’ve stated them; however, I would like to reiterate that I was not generalizing. I didn’t say that having a foreign boyfriend is wrong; in fact, you have tried to push that I have that opinion.

One thing for sure, I don’t engross my eyes looking at Filipinas with foreigners, whether the guy is a boyfriend, husband or not, as there are more important things that I need to focus.

Jeevan, US Air Base was located in Angeles City before, and that city is full of clubs. More Filipinas are getting married to soldiers back then.

DeeDee, you consider yourself an aussie. Why are you affected in this issue?

Yep i know:) but u know the nature of business right? i am not typecasting anyone its just that a few people mentioned this to me.

I have high respect for filipinos as hard workers, and down to earth people, as my company has quite a few of them:)

Really? In what sense you find all foreigners attractive? Unless you carry the ideals of colonial mentality, and this i can understand.
