I've factored in the alcohol. It may be a good thing that I have to go to a bar for a drink. May make me drink less! Even with Tax prices aren't too different from UK. I think for the oportunity Dubai presents the odd fine & bit of grief is worth it.

You might be better stayng in the UK in places where the degenerates who like that kind of thing stew in their own cess.

I agree with you on this point Navigator - the streets of the UK are awash with drunken and drugged scumbags who love to attack people and vandalise anything within reach.

The big, big advantage that Dubai has to offer is that it is comparatively crime-free in terms of violence and theft.

There needs to be responsibility with drinking, and where there is no responsibility, it needs to be curbed. I concede there is an argument for LESS freedom in some cases,in the West. (However, democracy and equality under the law are a basic human right of everyone - but are denied in the UAE).

Alcohol is against Muslim traditions, so when coming to a Muslim country I beleive that this shuld be respected by us non-Muslims.

But why does the Sheikh love alcohol so much if it is against local customs? It is because he makes 30% of all sales.

Is it any wonder that us ex-pats attach such little value to so-called 'local customs', when the customs just seem to be smokescreens for local rulers to profiteer in the name of Islam and to use the law as a personal privilege.

i believe someone mentioned that top local leaders are doing such a great job here, educated in western countries or not. this argument cannot be proven if you consider RTA. Or when you have to pay to get a licence to buy booze (because it is 'against local religious customs') and are then charged 30% tax when you buy, then you will find out what 'local customs' really means here.

Or when you get into a dispute with an Emirati about business or even a car collision, and whether you are right or wrong the law will come down on the Emiraitis favour, and you will have no access to justice. That's local custom, too.
