Hi BfromSA. I do know what my name means yes. And I am afrikaans. You?
Im from all over Sa and have lived in Cape Town, Pretoria, Nelspruit and Gordons Bay recently. And yourself? What do you think of dubai so far?

BfromSA
Wow, ek dink dis fantasties dat jy Afrikaans is!!
Anyway, I'm from Johannesburg, lived in KZN for about a total of two years of my life.
What I think of Dubai so far? Interesting place - it was a bit of a culture shock in the beginning and I am still getting used to a lot of things, like that fact that BBQ spices here taste nothing like the ones you get in SA!
But overall it's been a great experience and I have a suspicion it might even get better...
malchris
Ek dink dis net so beFOK dat jy ook afrikaans is 8)
Dubai's been a huge eye opener for me too. I used to think that Im living life very open-mindedly but had no idea really.
We shoudl hook up some time if youre keen :D
MaaaD
guys sorry to intervene here but what does it mean when you say i am afrikaans ?
malchris
Well, in SA we have many different cultures and races living together, very much like Dubai, and one of those is Afrikaans. It is a cultural group who developed from the dutch settlers who invaded the south of Africa in the 1600's and developed their own language.
Right now it is the youngest langueage in the world and is quickly spreading to all outskirts.
Where you from MaaD and what lang you speak?
GOOI MIELIES!
MaaaD
Thanks chris ! I am Palestinian and my mother tongue is Arabic.
bear
How's it bru,
I'm not from SA but i work with quite a few.
I hereby pass a vote that we have a DF bri sometime and invite all the afrikanas
welcome to the forum
BfromSA
Hey Malchris
Hoe gaan dinge daar by jou? Would love to hook up some time, jy klink nogal interessant. What hobbies do you have and more importantly, what do you do for fun??
BfromSA
HI Bear!
I think a braai would be an excellent idea! I know I'm up for it.
malchris
@ BfromSA:
Well, Works been keeping me pretty busy but I'm into long distance running and when I have the opportunity I like to dance through the nite (or 3am depending on where you are) to hard and fast house or tribal.
For self-analytical reasons I write poetry and segments of my imaginatin on odd and scattered pieces of paper.
Fun, very funny you should ask that. Ever heard of Fun City?
@ Bear. BRU! :D So nice to hear the most popular word in Sa. And Bri (actually spelled Braai and the second most popular word in the Afrikaans language, just after Beer). Lets do it!
malchris
and how about you BfromSA? what are you into?
BfromSA
So Bear, where are you from and what type of industry do you work in where you get the priviledge of working with South Africans? :D
BfromSA
Well, funny that you mention it, Malchris, I am an aspiring author and poet, I'm hoping to write my first Afrikaans novel while Im here in Dubai. I've had some poems published on Roekeloos.co.za but that's only a start.
I hope to someday have a book store and publishing company, hopefully I won't have to do it on my own. (hint, hint)
Yes, I know FunCity, why do you ask? Is it that entertainment centre for children where kids run around the whole day screaming and shouting in the quest for fun?
malchris
wow. that is such a weird co-incidence! Im in Dubai to save up so I can go back and open a bookshop in my quest to help afrikaans writers of the more alternative 'against the stream' styles to gain exposure. Publishing is an interest of mine but id venture into that only after finish my Honours in Afrikaans. My main focus at first will be to find ways for writers to get their work on the shelves, instead of being rejected by one big corporation after the other, simply because they dont comply with the traditional way of afrikaans writng or because they take on moral and social issues in our communities that the publishing powers that be are too scared to take on because it might be a risk. The voices of the people should be heard and I wanne help them.
mmm. Did I rant?
:!: and even stranger. my stuff is also published at roekeloos. small world this!!!!
Fun City. Well, I work for them. So when's the Bri?
BfromSA
Wow, that is strange!!
I like your plans on publishing writers that won't normally get published by the ordinary publishing houses in South Africa. There is a large amount of talented Afrikaans writers whose voices will never get heard because of them.
I'm also planning to study, but I would like to go up to my Doctorate in Afrikaans, but it's a long term plan at the moment and not something I can go into at the moment. First have to find a job!!
You work for FunCity? Boy oh boy, you must LOVE children!
malchris
Cool. Doctorate in Afrikaans. One of my dreams, but I dont know if I have the patience right now. We should definitely talk about this publishing thing. The more hands are joined in this the easier it would be to 'take over the world' as jy verstaan wat ek bedoel.
How long have you been here?
BfromSA
Yes, I think it'll be a great idea to meet up sometime and discuss this, it seems we both have a love for Die Taal and it can only help the cause the more like-minded people are involved.
I arrived in Dubai on 18 August at 2:00 am. How long have you been here?
Strange that we had to come all the way to Dubai to find someone else who's interested in Afrikaans.
malchris
Mysterious ways.... 8)
Ive been here just short of 4 months. Maybe we could go for coffee sometime. I see you in Karama. Maybe meet at Burjuman. You know Burjuman?
BfromSA
Mmm, to be honest, I have a slight idea, but I'm not too sure. Where in Bur Juman would you like to meet?
malchris
Ill PM you. Well organise that way.
You mind if i go and read some of your writing?
malchris
Cool. Thx for the PM. Hook up 2morow then.
