Hi there
I'm relocating to Dubai from the UK towards the end of APril with my husband and 18 month old son.
Can anyone give me any advice on where to start looking for properties to rent? We've been told that ARabian ranches/The Springs/The Greens areas are quite nice. Anyone got any other recommendations?
Also what are supermarkets like out there? I don't drive am I going to find it a nightmare getting around?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Hi,
I can't give you much advice as I too am moving to Dubai (with DH at the end of April).
I jsut wanted to say good luck, this is a great forum, my DH and I have spent hours looking at the posts and doing some research.
Here are some websites we have found useful.

(Excellent govt info plus links to accomadation)
Good luck and let me know how you go.

Supermarkets are excellent and stock basically everything from home and more. If you come from the UK and are used to certain brands you'll find one supermarket more suitable to your needs than the others-I'm not from the UK and I don't care about brands so it doesn't bother me. The main supermarkets are
Carrefour (which has a website and is based in many countries and, correct me if I am wrong, is French)
Union Coop (this is a local supermarket and cheapest in my opinion, being local it does not sell pork products or cigarettes...but you can get lighters!! go figure!!)
Park 'n Shop (has a great bakery-best bread!!)
Spinney's (the more up-market shopping experience with quite a few Waitrose branded items)
Choithram's (good bakery section and a variety of imported prods)
Taxis are inexpensive but public transport ie buses aren't great and I can't see you waiting in 45 plus heat and humidity with a tot waiting for a bus!!)
Driving wouldn't be a bad idea because you will have your baby in a car seat and my bet is anybody's driving is better than the Michael Schumacher taxi drivers driving skills.
The best recommendation for location has to be based mainly on two factors-where is your husband's place of work and your budget! :)

Hi,
Here's a couple of useful sites, namely a couple of Dubai's leading English newspapers just so you can read a little more about Dubai in the more current times:
The classified sections will definitely be of special interest to you.
I'm living in The Springs (villas) now and I can say that it's a fairly nice and quiet neighbourhood and the same goes for The Greens (apartments with shared pool/gym/etc). These residential enclaves are nestled between 2 mega malls, one of which houses Ski Dubai. So you see, it's pretty strategic location wise, though I must point out that public transportation (apart from cabs) are near non-existent and it would be best if you had your own set of wheels (circa 10 minutes drive to the malls). There are a couple of Choithrams in these neighbourhoods (don't know about The Arabian Ranches), in fact there's one just across the street from The Greens. Oh, Choithram is somewhat like Tesco... or rather like the "ar-chah" stores in UK, only bigger and (almost) as numerous. In fact, the Choithram chain hails from the UK.
Having been here for 2 months now, I'd say the exeprience is still pretty fresh... that said, cynicism hasn't actually taken hold yet, so add salt where necessary :o)
I'm sure others will soon add to what I wrote.
So good luck with the moving, Emma! Gosh, I miss London.
Cheers!

Thanks so much for the advice. Looks like I need to get cracking on the driving side of things and try and pass my test before end of April!
Really appreciate all the help and sites. Thanks we'll check them all out.
